Promoting the Purchase of Textbooks in the Vietnamese Higher Education Sector

Higher education textbooks sales account for a significant portion of the overall book market. This study makes an important contribution to the extant literature by examining students’ purchase of original textbooks in a developing market, Vietnam. Notably, it seeks to investigate why students do not purchase original textbooks as well as the difference in purchase behavior between different groups of students. The findings reveal that some key obstacles to students’ purchase behavior include high prices, insufficient availability, low perceived value, and the emergence of pirated textbooks. Another notable finding is that senior students who are female tend to purchase more textbooks. In light of these findings, marketing strategies are suggested for publishers, bookstores and universities who aim to promote the sales and consumption of original textbooks.

数字图书馆的专业教育近几年来在美国及其他国家迅速发展。网络调查显示大学开设数字图书馆专业课程的数字4年内增加了3倍。目前不但专业信息管理及图书馆院系设置此课程，计算机、通信及工程学院也设置类似课程。从对40多所大学数字图书馆课程的教学大纲、学习重点、课题项目及选用教科书的研究分析中可以看出，多数院系重视学生的实际操作本领，一些注重数字图书馆学的系统教育，一些偏重网络及计算机软件技术的教育。虽然占领先地位的并非都是传统的图书馆院系，有些教授内容也未全部使用此领域的最新研究成果，但将数字图书馆作为一门新学科内容，训练学生掌握使用这门新技能，已成为信息学、信息与计算机技术和信息管理大学课程中的一个热点。数字图书馆专业教育的迅速发展反映了信息管理及图书馆学教育的一个新趋势。

The Challenges of Higher Education Digital Publishing

The current generation of students uses computers, tablets, dedicated e-readers, and smart phones more than any previous student group. Student adoption of Web apps, social media of all kinds, computer games, as well as learning and desktop software is remarkably high making them not just computer literate but often digital experts. However, although they spend a great deal of time using the latest digital devices, 75% of students surveyed still prefer the traditional printed textbook over a digital counterpart, according to the ongoing research project Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education from the Book Industry Study Group (BISG). The data indicate that the current print value proposition is not meeting the needs of students. In particular, the price/value relationship is not sufficient to justify required adoptions or to preclude students seeking alternative methods for obtaining their content and pedagogy. Next-generation digital learning products have tremendous potential to offer students individualized solutions to their learning challenges enabling them to reduce their study time and to improve their grades. Their levels of customizability and interactivity are appealing to both students and instructors.

Higher Education and Emerging Technologies: Shifting Trends in Student Usage

This study serves as an update to a previous study by Sam Houston State University librarians about the use and preferences of Internet, communication, and educational technologies among students. Since the previous study was initiated in 2010, the iPad has made its debut and significantly altered the educational technology landscape. In this new landscape, this study investigates student usage of such technologies as instant messaging, cell phones, e-readers, social networking, RSS feeds, podcasts, and tablets. In addition, this study aims to determine which technologies students prefer the library to utilize for a variety of services, such as reference assistance or book renewals, and which technologies may not be worth the investment, such as geosocial networking. The information gained from this survey is intended to provide guidance for libraries looking to provide services utilizing the most popular technologies with the most efficient use of resources. Survey results show an increasing use and dependence on educational technologies and a desire for basic library services to be available on a variety of platforms and technologies.

Assessment in Higher Education

An overview of outcomes assessment in postsecondary education is presented, including attention to legislative and accreditation mandates, assessment methods commonly used, and the controversies associated with the implementation of outcomes assesment programs. In examining the results of institutional curriculum assesment programs, the author looks at the ways academic libraries can become involved in university and college level assessment programs in ways which benefit libraries, in addition to looking at ways libraries can assess their instructional programs.     

Higher Education in Russia

The authors review the system for the acquisition and distribution of the foreign literature required by Soviet and Russian institutions of higher education for the period from 1989 to 1995. As Russia moves toward a democratic society, a centralized system designed for total State control is no longer capable of serving all the libraries in higher education institutions.
