Statistical computing

Elements of statistical computing are discussed in this series. We begin with the notion of random numbers and their generation using computers. Using these computer generated random numbers for statistical computing and simulations is discussed in the later parts of the series.     

Statistical computing

The statistical simulation technique is a very powerful and simple technique for answering complicated probabilistic questions regarding random experiments. The principles on which this technique is based are the Laws of Large Numbers (LLN). These laws say that under fairly general conditions, as the sample size increases, the sample quantities converge, in an appropriate sense, to the corresponding population quantities. (For details regarding LLN, see [1]). Here we illustrate the technique by giving some examples.     

Raising Statistical Awareness

This article describes the organisation and results of the 1990 New Zealand Children's Census. This census, which preceded a National Census, provided a powerful tool for raising statistical awareness nationwide.
