After over two decades of discussions regarding the identification of giftedness among non‐traditional populations in the United States, the issues remain the same. Many students continue to be under represented in programs for the gifted because of traditional assessment instruments used to identify gifted students. Moreover, the sociocultural influences on giftedness still have not been integrated into the identifying process. This article presents the efforts of a project responding to the need for culturally relevant alternatives to present assessment practices in the identification of giftedness among the rural Mexican American population in the southwest United States.  相似文献

Given the severe paucity of gifted programs in this nation, the educational and legal rights of gifted students are not being adequately served. This article briefly examines developments at the federal level that impact upon both the legal and educational rights of gifted students. Discrepancies exist between the research literature on the social competence of gifted children and educators’ subjective experience of their students’ social problems. Five alternative hypotheses are examined which may account for discrepancies in these perspectives. Basal reading manuals have been found to be utilized with gifted readers (Cagney &; Sakiey, 1984). Therefore, this study attempted to determine if the eight components delineated to be more important to gifted than nongifted readers by reading and gifted educators in the Dole and Adams (1983) study were included in basal materials. Three basal series were examined and it was found that seven of the eight components were included, mainly in the enrichment section of the manual. Therefore, basal manuals can meet the needs of gifted readers if utilized appropriately.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article, which is the first of two to examine the ideas of R. S. Peters on moral education, consideration is given to his justificatory arguments found in Ethics and Education. Here he employs presupposition arguments to show to what anyone engaging in moral discourse is committed. The result is a group of procedural principles which are recommended to be employed in moral education. This article is an attempt to examine the presupposition arguments Peters employs, to comment on the procedural principles he believes are presupposed, and to consider the strength of the presupposition argument. My conclusion is that Peters's arguments fail to establish the conclusion he arrives at, and that any gains from the form of argument he uses are hollow.  相似文献
