With the rapid growth in the Chinese and Indian economies, the opportunities for publishers have dramatically expanded. The paper discusses the regulatory, political, economic and cultural factors to be considered in entering these markets. Finally, the paper discusses three key tradeoffs to be considered in these markets: standardization/localization, volume/margin and the relative importance of digital/paper publications.

The pace of technology development in fields other than historic preservation has generally outstripped that of historic preservation, resulting in a predominant flow from those fields into historic preservation practice. This chapter summarizes some of the major trends in technology transfer and explores some of the issues that the increased use of advanced technologies brings to the practice of historic preservation. It also examines the relationship of the development of technologies for historic preservation to public policy.

The Challenges of Higher Education Digital Publishing

The current generation of students uses computers, tablets, dedicated e-readers, and smart phones more than any previous student group. Student adoption of Web apps, social media of all kinds, computer games, as well as learning and desktop software is remarkably high making them not just computer literate but often digital experts. However, although they spend a great deal of time using the latest digital devices, 75% of students surveyed still prefer the traditional printed textbook over a digital counterpart, according to the ongoing research project Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education from the Book Industry Study Group (BISG). The data indicate that the current print value proposition is not meeting the needs of students. In particular, the price/value relationship is not sufficient to justify required adoptions or to preclude students seeking alternative methods for obtaining their content and pedagogy. Next-generation digital learning products have tremendous potential to offer students individualized solutions to their learning challenges enabling them to reduce their study time and to improve their grades. Their levels of customizability and interactivity are appealing to both students and instructors.

The Challenges and Opportunities of Sustaining Volunteer-Based Rural Libraries

ABSTRACT

In an era of rural service decline and population aging, some rural libraries rely on volunteers to keep them open within the community. This paper outlines the challenges of sustaining such volunteer-based rural libraries, drawing on a case study of a volunteer-based library in rural Ontario, Canada. Findings suggest that age of volunteers, volunteer participation, territoriality, branch polarization and the burden of volunteering present challenges in sustaining the volunteer program at the library, yet the library contributes to the community through community engagement, enabling aging in place and through economic development. The paper concludes with recommendations from the case study on how the sustain such a volunteer program.

The concept dates to the early 1990s, but problems with the technology coupled with a lack of interest by libraries and book vendors hindered its popularity. Today, print-on-demand remains ideal for institutional repositories and digital collections, as well as for collection development. It is especially popular for users with print preferences. Many publishers and librarians believe print-on-demand holds more promise for libraries than electronic books.

The Body As Medium in the Digital Age: Challenges and Opportunities

This essay glosses an attempt to capture communication in the Arab uprisings through the prism of the human body. Such an approach to communication and revolution entails several challenges and opportunities. Challenges include tension between biopolitical approaches and a perspective that considers the body as an instrument of practice, the tendency in scholarship that restricts discussions of the body to discussions of gender and sexuality, and not politics at large, and the glossing over of issues of social class and geographic location, all crucial when considering the body as an instrument of communication. Opportunities afforded by using the body as a focal point include a fuller consideration of human agency that eschews technological determinism when studying power and resistance, a historically grounded analytical approach that preempts an uncritical dalliance with presentism, the body being in effect the “oldest medium,” and an analytical advantage whereby the body functions as a heuristic eye of the needle through which all empirical materials, and theoretical considerations are filtered, considered and interpreted.
