Becoming a teacher educator: a personal perspective

This paper examines various aspects of the author's transition from classroom teacher to a cooperating teacher and then from cooperating teacher to university teacher educator. This analysis is used as the basis for several specific suggestions for how to improve the preparation of the next generation of teacher educators and teacher education programs.

Conclusion In closing, the imperative remains to develop a presidential scorecard that focuses on the elements of leadership that truly further the great work of higher education. The academy requires leaders who are committed to quality, self-renewing change, and integrity in order to weather the current storms of uncertainty and forge a new model for higher academic achievement.The poet, Heinrich Heine, wrote in a letter: When I lately stood with a friend before the Cathedral Amiens, he asked me why we can no longer build such piles. I replied, Dear Alphonse, men in those days had convictions. We moderns have opinions, and it requires something more than an opinion to build a Gothic cathedral. The present and future leaders of America's colleges and universities must have convictions that rival those of the builders of old. Indeed, the work to be done transcends mere bricks, mortar, flesh, and blood. The mind is the agent and the object of our labors; it is both scaffold and structure, chisel and stone, giving shape and substance to human achievement. If the work of the academy is to stand the test of time, the construction must be sound-the builders must build with integrity.Charles J. McClain is currently Commissioner of Higher Education for the state of Missouri. He has held a variety of positions in a long and distinguished career in education. He has been teacher, principal, superintendent, and university president. He founded Jefferson College in 1963 and was president of Northeast Missouri State University for 20 years.     

The documentation of distance education: a personal view

Following a brief account of the work of the Open University International Documentation Centre on Distance Learning, different forms of documentation in distance education: books, materials produced in connection with distance teaching programmes, journals and journal articles, and report literature, are identified and described. The central focus of the article is a critique of the treatment of the literature of distance education by two ERIC international bibliographical services. Proposals are made to survey existing bibliographical provision worldwide.     

略论现代远程教育文化的内涵

现代远程教育文化是现代远程教育研究的重要课题之一.开展现代远程教育文化研究,既是远程教育实践发展的需要,也是远程教育学科建设的需要,更是我国建设学习型社会的需要.在对文化研究理论的简单归纳基础上,本文就其主要内容展开了讨论,包括物质文化、精神文化、教学文化和制度文化四个维度的十个方面.并指出了现代远程教育文化研究的价值和意义有利于培养积极向上的学习方式和生活方式,有利于营造健康和谐的远程教育文化生态,有利于形成具有中国特色的现代远程教育文化.

由于社会的发展,人们对健康的要求更加迫切。目前我国采用的《学生体育合格标准》,从评价方向和内容上已不适应现代学生的客观实际。因此,教育部、国家体育总局于2002年7月25日颁布了《学生体质健康标准》(试行方案及实施办法),取代了《学生体育合格标准》。我省从2003年9月1日起,对新入学的学生执行新标准。《学生体质健康标准》能够促进学生身体的正常生长和发育、形态机能的全面协调发展、身体健康素质的全面提高和激励学生主动、自觉地参加经常性的体育锻炼,有利于把学生培养成为德、智、体、美全面发展的高素质人才。     

A collaborative case study of teacher change: From a personal to a professional perspective

This 5-year case study of teacher change documents an elementary classroom teacher's transition from a personal to a professional perspective. In this transition she moves from classroom concerns that feel individually determined to an awareness of the historical and socio-political nature of educational ideas and teaching practices. The teacher and researchers' interpretations of this transition are each included and their process of collaboration to construct them is described.     

Evolving issues in early childhood education: A personal perspective

This article describes the issues in early childhood education that were most pressing during the past two decades. It indicates whether each issue has been settled and outlines urgent new issues for today. In 1967 the most salient issues were the importance of early childhood for education, when early education should begin, whether it could compensate for childhood experience at home, and whether the effects of early education were permanent. In 1972 the central issue was the best kind of early educational program. By 1977 attention had shifted to ways that early education could be done most efficiently and cheaply, whether parent education was the answer, and how it worked. By 1982 a new issue had arisen: the effects of full-time day care on preschool children's development. Today's most pressing issues seem to be finding ways to maximize the fit between programs and participants, the implications of the superbaby trend, and the effects of day care on infants' development.

The educator needs to be educated: reflections on the political pedagogy of Marx,Lenin and Habermas

This essay examines one of the most intractable pedagogical problems of the Marxian revolutionary tradition: who will educate the educator and how ought the learning process to proceed. The solutions of Marx, Lenin and Habermas are critically examined towards the clarification of the emancipatory learning process. This learning process has three components: enlightenment, empowerment and emancipatory collective action. Lessons are drawn for our own time.
