Identifying strategic management information systems planning parameters using case studies

The management information systems (MIS) literature reveals a list of parameters essential for the successful implementation of an IS planning process. Some studies stress the importance of integrating the corporate objectives of a firm into the IS planning process. Other studies discuss the importance of performing an analysis of competitors, or determining the stage of maturity a firm has reached, or the framework used for setting information technology investment priorities. Yet others state that the choice of methodology that will be utilized to develop the IS plan will be crucial to the success of that plan. The objective of this paper is to develop a holistic conceptual model that combines the above parameters into a framework that fully integrates the corporate objectives of a firm into every aspect of the planning process. Three large multi-national courier companies with regional headquarters in Singapore were studied over an eight-month period while undergoing an extensive MIS planning process. Based on these studies, a model based on general systems theory that views the IS planning process in a holistic framework firmly rooted in the view that a firm's corporate objectives must drive the entire process.

以面向对象自动化单元测试的设计目标为指导,结合面向对象自动化单元测试理论分析,采用Kent Beck和Ralph Johnson提出的模式产生体系结构方式架构框架系统。运用模式设计体系结构的思想,设计了一个用于面向对象软件单元测试的自动化测试框架。该测试框架易学好用,能方便程序员开发测试用例,保证测试用例的持久性和可复用性,适合迭代开发单元测试。     

The study of the turnover of MIS professionals—The gap between Taiwanese and US societies

There are two issues relating to the turnover of MIS professionals that remain largely unexplored in the literature: (1) the relationship between the turnover and career anchors of MIS professionals; and (2) the role played by national culture in this relationship. Due to the fact that MIS professionals often process significant information by means of specific technical skills in organizations, high turnover rates among these professionals create problems for organizations. Traditionally, MIS professionals have been considered different from other professionals. Therefore, identifying MIS professionals’ motivation for job change and resolving problems they encounter may lead to a reduction in the turnover rate of these professionals in organizations. In this study, 353 MIS professionals in Taiwan were interviewed to identify their career anchors and motivation for job change. The result indicates the value of exploring a new category of anchor—“learning motivation”. The result also suggests that the anchor of greatest concern for these professionals is lifestyle, followed by organizational stability and learning motivation. The finding of this study differs from those made in a US context, where service is ranked top. Finally, this study posits three propositions related to career anchors and cultural factors across different ages.

Spatial decoupling of light absorption and reaction sites in n-Si photocathodes for solar water splitting

Metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) photocathodes offer a simple alternative to p-n junction photocathodes in photoelectrochemical water splitting. However, the parasitic light absorption of catalysts and metal layers in the MIS junction, as well as the lack of low work function metals to form a large band offset with p-Si, severely limit their performance. This paper describes an MIS photocathode fabricated from n-Si, rather than the commonly used p-Si, to spatially decouple light absorption from reaction sites, which enables the majority carriers, instead of the commonly used minority carriers, to drive the surface reaction, making it possible to place the reaction sites far away from the light absorption region. Thus, the catalysts could be moved to the backside of the MIS junction to avoid light shielding. Moreover, the adoption of n-Si unlocks a variety of high work function materials for photovoltage generation. The obtained n-Si MIS photocathode exhibits an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 10.26% with a stability up to 300 h.
