Remembering the Future: Art & Design and Media Education in Scotland

Media Education, including Media Studies as discipline in its own right and as a permeating element of other subjects, not least art and design, has enjoyed a privileged growth in Scotland. However, little is known about this development outside Scotland. Occasioned by a series of school residencies utilising photographic and electronic imaging, the paper looks at some of the background to media education's promissory growth whilst seeking to illuminate its current status, especially when set against recently imposed governmental constraints. Despite that trend, particular emphasis is placed on the ability of media education to vitiate tendencies towards orthodoxy. At the same time, and in the same context, the paper takes the opportunity to look at two contemporary issues in art and design education - the role of critical studies as an underpinning sub-discipline and that of child-centred expressivity which, at times, have been seen to be irreconcilably opposite

Media Literacy Art Education: Deconstructing Lesbian and Gay Stereotypes in the Media

Popular media such as films, television programmes/commercials and magazines have become the dominant source through which children learn about others and their world, develop attitudes and beliefs as manifested in media expressions, and formulate their sense of identity. Popular media have enormous influence on children who are constantly immersing themselves in value‐laden media images that perpetuate over‐generalised representations of cultural groups, in particular, lesbian and gay stereotypes. By critically examining media images in the art room, media literacy art education offers art teachers and their students an opportunity to nurture their aesthetic sensibilities, social awareness and the media literacy necessary to resist and challenge prejudiced, dehumanised or unjust social practices. This article explores issues of lesbian and gay stereotypes in the media, and proposes using media images as a pedagogical device to help students deconstruct them.

Post-it Culture: Post-modernism and Art and Design Education

This paper examines the phenomenon of Post-modernism and its growing relationship to art and design education and its limitations in that context. It examines how and why an authentic architectural style developed into a late twentieth century philosophy, was exploited by visual artists, and was then applied to art and design education. The paper looks at a range of issues and concepts coterminous with the growth of post-modern thought, particularly the idea of post-historicism. In that sense it posits Post-modernism as one narrative amongst a number. The language of Post-modernism is also explored, as is the idea of a ‘post-medium age’. It is then suggested, using the argument of Post-modernism itself, that art and design education for the next millennium depends upon the recognition of the need for a range of new narratives.

单独科目的美术教育活动,其活动目标的制订和内容的选择多以幼儿美术领域的学习和发展为考量,并较多考虑美术学科本身的内在逻辑和要求,活动组织的结构化程度较高.在幼儿园课程与教学改革的大背景下,单独科目的美术教育活动的目标制订和内容选择应充分考虑幼儿的兴趣和需要,活动设计可采取一些“变式”,活动过程中应关注幼儿的感知与体验,多为幼儿提供自由探索和发现的机会,活动可作适当的延伸或拓展.     

Positively Different: Art and Design in Special Education

This article explores issues of ‘difference’ in terms of identity for disabled pupils, including those with special educational needs in the context of art and design education. By focusing on body image and fashion, positive and negative views of those with a different identity, in relation to inclusion and visibility, in society and formal schooling are addressed. Inclusive values for those in a special school are identified and promoted with reference to a particular project in art and design.     

新媒体时代艺术教育的挑战与创新

艺术的创作和传播与媒体发展紧密相连。新媒体的发展和普及改变了人们的生活方式,推动人类进入一个前所未有的数字时代,艺术的创作方式和存在形式也因此改变,艺术与非艺术的界限正在消失,艺术有了更丰富的内涵。"新媒体艺术学院"、"数字媒体艺术"、"媒体创意"等专业院校大量涌现,伴随着数字艺术的蓬勃发展,艺术教育面对前所未有的挑战。艺术教育工作者需要结合新媒体艺术的特点,从课程设计、创新教育、团队协作等方面进行探索。
