Program Directors' Perceptions of Admission Screening Measures and Indicators of Student Success

The purpose of the current research was to ascertain program directors' perceptions of the effectiveness of applicant screening measures currently used in counselor education programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs and their perceptions of the effectiveness of measures of graduate student success. The personal interview was identified as the most effective screening measure currently used, and practicum/internship performance was considered the most effective measure of graduate student success.     

Training Counselors to Interpret Psychoeducational Evaluations: A Course Model

Evidence from the literature and from reported practice indicates that school counselors are increasingly expected to be competent in the interpretation of individually administered psychoeducational tests and reports. Systematic training in these competencies, however, is often not included as an integral part of counselor education programs. This article describes one counselor education program's response to the need for training in these interdisciplinary skills. The course model presented has been positively received by students and counseling internship supervisors.     

A Model for Collaborative Teaching Teams in Counselor Education

Teaching's importance has increased for faculty members and is reflected in the selection criteria for new faculty, particularly those in counselor education. Thus, graduate programs need to provide students with opportunities to obtain teaching experience and enhance their pedagogical training. The collaborative teaching teams model is intended to assist counselor educators in preparing doctoral‐level counseling students for careers in academia. Recommendations for model implementation are provided and specific examples are presented to demonstrate the use of this model in a counselor education and supervision doctoral program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.     

Counselor Trainee Effectiveness: More Puzzle Pieces?

This study continues the search for meaningful relationships between counselor trainee characteristics and effectiveness. Self-disclosure, dogmatism, locus of control, Machiavellianism, academic aptitude, and sex of counselor trainees were investigated for their relationships to effectiveness during practicum or internship. The nature of these relationships as well as their implications for the counseling profession are discussed.     

Professional Functioning: Exploring Developmental Narratives of Counselor Trainees

The authors analyzed the reflective journals of 49 counselor trainees in internship using a conventional content analysis approach. Developmental insights from the 4 overarching themes and 7 subthemes are provided to assist counselor education and supervision programs in supporting the professional functioning of counselor trainees.     

教师培养意识和教学模式

本文认为,刘颂浩(2014)提出的"对外汉语教学和本专业硕士培养和实习工作有机地融合"的思路若能落实,将是研究生培养方式的重大改变,可以全面提高研究生的培养质量。由于研究生实践经验有限,参与教学工作时宜采取"逐渐进入"的方式。本文进一步指出,研究生在参与学院教学进行教学实习的过程中,应得到一定的专业指导,这一指导过程无论对指导教师还是对研究生都有好处。本文最后依据较新的实证研究成果指出,研究生培养不能简单采取"教学主管+无经验的学生教师"的二元体系,而应设计为"主管教师+有经验的学生教师+无经验的学生教师"的层级模式。     

An Educator/Practitioner Model for Counselor Education Doctoral Programs

This article suggests that counselor education develops an educator/practitioner model for the doctoral programs to include systematic preparation in graduate teaching supervision, inquiry, and counseling practice.     

Exploitation or opportunity? Student perceptions of internships in enhancing employability skills

Internships are now widely promoted as a valuable means of enhancing graduate employability. However, little is known about student perceptions of internships. Drawing on data from a pre-1992 university, two types of graduate are identified: engagers and disengagers. The engagers valued internship opportunities while the disengagers perceived these roles as exploitative and worthless. Few were able to distinguish paid, structured internship opportunities from unpaid, exploitative roles. We conclude that higher education institutes need to be more proactive in extolling the value of paid internships to all students and not just those most likely to engage with their services.     

Using the Workshop in Consultation Training

Although graduate students should be trained in consulting as well as counseling skills, not all counselor education programs systematically teach such consultation skills. Counselor trainees need to practice and implement those skills in laboratory as well as field settings. Workshops have been used successfully to teach oral delivery consultation skills in a counselor training program. In this article, the workshop is offered as a training tool in consultation skills. The use and purposes of workshops are presented, and procedures are demonstrated regarding the use of workshops within counselor education courses. Benefits to counselor trainees are discussed.

相较于完善而成熟的本科生辅导员制度,当前的研究生辅导员制度正经历着一个从无到有,从效仿到创新的成长历程。在此建制过程中,研究生辅导员面临着诸多的职业"尴尬"。而在研究生培养中,研究生辅导员基本涉及每一个环节,必须充分认识到其之重要性,从四大方面发挥其作用,并注意期间不可忽视的问题。     

Philosophical and Situational Issues Relating to the Objectives of Counselor Education

Counselor education, through its formal organization (ACES), is in the process of examining its standards for program accreditation used for the past decade. This discussion examines current educational forces, such as social change, political conditions, and learning process developments as a basis for a new look at the standards for counselor preparation. Based on these influences, four categories of situational and philosophical issues are postulated: educational and psychological assumptions, outcome behaviors of the counselor education graduate, outcomes of counselor education programming, and outcome behaviors of professional guidance personnel. It is recommended that outcomes of counselor education should be considered in performance terms before instructional strategies are developed.     

Organizing a Practicum and Internship Program in Counselor Education

This article describes procedures for organizing a practicum and internship program in counselor education. Application procedures, supervision, and communication with sites, students, and supervisors are discussed.     

Systematic Group Counselor Training: A Mastery Model

We had previously identified specific cognitive and experiential group counselor training objectives; this study represents a systematic attempt to plan, develop, and evaluate a training model using those objectives. The mastery learning model was identified as best suited for carrying out the training. At the beginning of the training (carried out as two concurrent graduate courses in group counseling), the students were presented with the objectives, a time plan, and evaluation criteria. The training model consisted of 15 graduate students, 11 at the doctoral and 4 at the master's level. Evaluations of course content and course objectives by experimental and comparison groups of trainees indicated the overall success of this exploratory study.     

LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM: THE UNDERGRADUATE GERONTOLOGY INTERNSHIP

This article describes an undergraduate gerontology internship program that provides an intermediary level of involvement between a service-learning activity and a pre-professional graduate school internship, presents a case study of a student's learning experience, and suggests a teaching and learning structure that may be scaffolded to fit individual student needs and goals. A humanistic teaching orientation is discussed as a method to facilitate learning and a deeper understanding of internship experiences.     

Factors That Influence Self‐Efficacy of Counseling Students: An Exploratory Study

The study examined whether age, prior work experience, number of courses taken, and number of internship hours have a positive relationship with counseling self‐efficacy. Participants were 116 counselor education students. The results from correlation and multivariate analyses of covariance revealed that the length of internship hours and prior related work experience were positively correlated with counseling self‐efficacy. The differences in counseling anxiety, affection adjustment, and assessment found between the students in programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and those in non‐CACREP‐accredited programs disappeared when the background variables were controlled as covariates.     

Counselor Education,Program Accreditation and Counselor Credentialing in Turkey

The purpose of this article is to examine counselor education and the current state of affairs regarding program accreditation and counselor credentialing efforts in Turkey. The paper considers the Turkish education and higher education systems, followed by a brief history of counseling and current counselor education in Turkey and, finally, discusses accreditation and credentialing processes in the country. Attention to these matters and, in particular, standardization and restructuring of undergraduate and graduate counseling programs is considered increasingly important for the development of counseling in Turkey.     

Conceptualizing the Counseling Training Environment Using Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory

While learning environment research has been growing in popularity over the past few decades, little attention has been given towards the learning environment of graduate students, and virtually no attention has been given specifically towards graduate counseling and related programs such as professional counseling, clinical and counseling psychology, and marriage and family therapy. In this paper we propose using Bronfenbrenner’s (1979, 1992) ecological theory as a model to conceptualize the training environment of such counselor preparation programs. Through the application of Bronfenbrenner’s theory, counselor educators and counseling trainees can better understand the systemic nature of the training environment that they create and where they train. Implications and recommendations for future research are provided to further advance the knowledge and awareness of the counseling training environment.     

Perceptions of Counselor Performance: A Comparative Study

Videotaped excerpts of actual counseling interviews were rated using the criteria of empathy, unconditional positive regard, congruence, depth of self-exploration, and counselor effectiveness. Analysis-of-variance techniques indicated no significant differences among the ratings of counselors, counselor educators, and graduate students; there were significant differences among ratings of graduate students in different programs.     

基于知识应用的仿真学习与大学生就业能力培养——通过在校学习解决工作经验缺失的途径

大学生就业问题是当前中国经济社会发展过程中的突出问题,已经引起社会各界的普遍关注。本文从知识应用的仿真学习视角出发,认为影响大学生就业的原因均与缺少工作经验有关,而缺少工作经验对学生的影响伴随着整个大学阶段。本文认为高校应从建立工作标准实验室、组织仿真学习训练夏令营、举办工作能力竞赛、开设仿真学习课程等方面着手,通过多种方式使大学生将理论学习与工作方法结合起来,解决大学生缺乏工作经验的问题,提升大学生就业能力。
