True European integration cannot occur without developing a common cultural base that preserves diversity. An analysis of
the present European publishing market and the involvement to date of the European Community in publishing sheds light on
the likely impact of European unity on the industry. The book is the main force of European culture, and European publishing
is healthy. To protect and enhance this vitality, the European Community must promote coordination with regard to author/publisher
relations, adaptation of book distribution channels, book pricing, taxation, libraries, promotion of reading, foreign trade,
control of illicit reprography, and development of information and research relevant to publishing and the book.
Germán Sánchez Ruipérez is founder, chairman and CEO of Grupo Anaya and CEO of America Publishing Group. He heads the Committee
on Reading of the International Publishers Association and the Ibero-American Chapter of the International Group of Scientific,
Technical and Medical Publishers. 相似文献

To understand modern publishing, detailed historical studies must be undertaken of individual publishing houses, their leading
figures, and their relationships with authors. Such studies, the authors argue, will permit us to understand how a publishing
house establishes its identity. They describe in detail a research program based on these principles that is investigating
literary publishing in Quebec.

Robert E. Baensch 《Publishing Research Quarterly》1988,4(4):6-14
Robert Baensch documents and discusses the impact of consolidation, not only in publishing itself, but in printing, book distribution
and government funding. He also analyzes the impact of declining enrollments in higher education and the growing competition
that the video industry (and its concentration) poses to book publishing. Rather than despair, he urges, publishers must attempt
to deal with these forces and shape the future.
Robert E. Baensch is director of publishing for the American Institute of Physics. Formerly vice president of marketing, Macmillan
Publishing Co., he is also chairman of the AAP’s Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division Address for correspondence. 相似文献

In this article we will provide a general overview of the situation of the digital publishing in Europe starting from the
insights provided by the Editech conference, the international day of advanced study organized by the Italian Publishers Association
and focused on the trends, perspectives and applications of technological innovation in publishing at an international level.
It is the main Italian event dedicated to book publishing with the aim of helping publishers define their short- and medium-term
digital strategies, while being aware of the opportunities and risks involved in the conversion to digital of their business
model. The Editech 2010 main focus had been: the market and the national and international situation of digital publishing,
the new buying and reading behaviors of consumers, e-books and content for e-readers and mobile devices, new production processes
(XML, ePub, digital printing) and the distribution scenario and the diffusion of digital content. 相似文献

As an undergraduate at Harvard University, Bayard L. Kilgour (’27) developed a life-long interest in Russia. Kilgour made numerous trips to Soviet Russia where he placed special emphasis on acquiring books, paintings, and other decorative artwork. His passion for Russia is witnessed through his philanthropic endeavors both to the Harvard University Libraries and to the Cincinnati Art Museum. In addition to donations of books and other artifacts, Mr. Kilgour provided endowments for the continued acquisition of Slavic materials to ensure that the collections he established continue to develop and grow. 相似文献

During the past six years the Journal of Broadcasting has brought to its readers bibliographies on specific topics (audience measurement techniques, content analysis, etc.) and from publications devoted to a specific field (law, economics, journalism, etc.). The bibliography published below belongs to this second category. Education on the Air, the yearbook of the Institute for Education by Radio‐Television, is a continuous record of the deliberations of a convention devoted to exploring the informative and cultural uses of broadcasting. Under the direction of I. Keith Tyler, the IERT was for many years the only major association devoted exclusively to this subject area, and many of the present organizations now in the field are “spin‐offs” from these annual meetings hosted by the Ohio State University. Within the framework of the IERT, the subject of broadcast journalism has not been neglected. Over a period of almost 30 years, this use of radio for informing the public of the events of the day was discussed in various IERT sessions. This bibliography was prepared to assist researchers and students interested in the growth and development of broadcast journalism as reflected in the IERT annual meetings. Dr. Heath is professor of journalism at Oklahoma State University, and is former chairman of the Council on Radio‐Television Journalism of the Association for Education in Journalism. Mr. Wolfson is working toward his doctorate at Michigan State University. They collaborated on this bibliography while at Iowa State University. 相似文献

This paper reviews events of SSP 2013 and AAUP 2013 within the context of Nassim Nicholas Taleb's notions of Black Swans (unexpected game changers) to anticipate the formation of competitive arenas (i.e. new models and revenue streams) for scholarly communications. It examines Tim O'Reilly's keynote address at SSP 2013, the advice of Michael Schrage from the opening Plenary at AAUP 2013, and Tim Sullivan's discussion of Harvard Business Publication's use of a topical blog network as new publishing platform to access global digital communications networks. The essay extrapolates from the case studies presented to overlay the strategies of successful practitioner presses and the advice of sought‐after business consultants on the work of academic houses, to imagine the next competitive frontier(s) in scholarly publishing. 相似文献

Bilingual publishing has become a strategy employed by journals from the non‐Anglophone world to gain wider recognition. Beyond anecdotal evidence, however, there are no published accounts of the experiences of editors and authors of bilingual journals with the process of bilingual publication. It is also unclear how authors writing in bilingual journals judge the quality of the translations and whether they consider this sort of publishing as beneficial for their aims. Consequently, we carried out two surveys: one among editors of bilingual journals and one anonymous survey among authors and translators of articles published in Deutsches Ärzteblatt International, the bilingual journal of the German Medical Association. Eight of nine journals as well as 233 of 353 authors and 4 of 6 translators took part. Most journals reported that bilingual publication helped in becoming indexed in important databases (e.g. Medline), receiving or improving an Impact Factor, and in attracting authors. All journals plan to continue publishing bilingually. Authors were ‘satisfied’ (40.8%) or ‘very satisfied’ (57.8%) with translations. Almost all (96.7%) were in favour of bilingual publication of their work. They did not view an English translation as an obstacle to another related English language paper. Translators highlighted challenges relating to specialized terminology and to terms specific to the regional healthcare system. 相似文献

Over the last five years several scholarly publishing associations have been launched in Africa ‐ the Forum for African Medical Editors (FAME), the Society of African Journals (SAJE), the Consortium of African Scholarly Publishers (CASP), the Africa Journals Partnership Project and the African Association of Science Editors (AASE). What, if any, has been the impact of these initiatives? This paper reviews the most notable of these associations, FAME, which was established in 2003 with the support of the World Association of Medical Editors, the Council of Science Editors and the Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR). FAME is evaluated in relation to two other international scholarly publishing associations ‐ the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) in South America and the Eastern Mediterranean Association of Medical Editors (EMAME). The article also discusses the future of FAME with regards to new developments in open access publishing through African Journals Online.JM 相似文献

Relationships between professors as textbook authors and publishing houses as textbook producers have always been fragile.
L. Kathy Heilenman examines this relationship and describes how current changes in the climate of universities and in the
structure of publishing houses have converged to render this relationship more than usaually problematic. She concludes with
suggestions for restructuring the relationship so as to encourage the production of high-quality, innovative textbooks in
a partnership between publishers and professors.
L. Kathy Heilenman teaches French at the University of Iowa and is one of the authors ofVoilà! a first-year college-level French textbook. 相似文献

Czeslaw Jan Grycz 《Publishing Research Quarterly》1991,7(4):3-12
Technological change in publishing comes in three forms: (1) software applications intended to increase efficiency of existing
processes; (2) entirely new publishing opportunities, and (3) pressures exerted on the system of publishing. For educators
and publishers, this poses a challenge. Teaching computer applications is often indistinguishable from mere skills-training,
and may be inappropriate for most professional publishing education programs. The study of possible business opportunities
may be impractically abstract, and consequently may be viewed with indifference by professional publishers. The study of systemic
change requires a more inclusive definition of scope than is enjoyed by most academic and in-house education programs. In
every case, fostering an understanding of the context and process of change itself is crucial for meaningful education. The
author uses examples based in traditional scholarly publishing as illustrations.
Czeslaw Jan Grycz was previously design and production manager of the University of California Press.

This article considers the British experience of developing education for publishers at the end of the 1990s. To introduce
the subject, it briefly outlines recent trends in the UK in publishing and bookselling: the size and nature of the workforce
as revealed in recent surveys; and what employers recently indicated that they are looking for in their employees. Then, it
summarises some of the developments that are taking place in education and training, before outlining the courses currently
available in the Universities, their growing emphasis on business management and Information Technology, and the benefits
to employers of recruiting students from these courses. Finally, it raises issues that will become more significant in the
future: new legal and ethical challenges, and the responsibility for preservation and conservation arising from technological
changes; keeping existing staff up to date; the international dimensions of the industry; retaining links between the academic
community and the industry; regulating standards of professional practice; and the development of research.
An earlier and shorter version of this paper, entitled “Education for publishing— the British experience,” was presented by
