The purpose of this study was to determine if teachers who participated in a professional development program continued to learn about inquiry and inquiry teaching as they implemented inquiry in their classrooms. A qualitative design utilizing inductive analysis was used to investigate teachers’ understanding and classroom implementation of inquiry. Findings are presented as assertions, drawing support from four focal teachers. For each assertion, confirming and disconfirming data are presented. Based on these data, we assert that a) there was little or no change in teachers’ individual understanding of inquiry, and b) professional development enhanced teachers’ ability to design inquiry-based activities – however, classroom implementation did not reflect a high level of inquiry.  相似文献

The concept ‘silence’ has diametrically opposed meanings; it connotes peace and contemplation as well as death and oblivion. Silence can also be considered a practice. There is keeping the rule of silence to still the mind and find inner truth, as well as forcibly silencing in the sense of subjugating another to one's own purposes. The concept of teaching runs the gamut between these extremes, from respectfully leading students to search and discover, to relentlessly bending them to one's own will. This article examines contradictory connotations and practices of silence and teachers’ ambivalent perceptions of it in order to conceptualize a positive practice of silence for teacher education.  相似文献

沉默权是一种在刑事诉讼中赋予犯罪嫌疑人、被告人的重要诉讼权利.这种诉讼权利从十七世纪产生至今,已经有几百年的历史,它反映了一个国家在刑事程序中,犯罪嫌疑人、被告人的人权状况和刑事诉讼文明进步的程度,现在已经成为世界许多国家刑事司法制度中体现人权保障的重要内容之一,对丰富刑事诉讼职能、实现刑事诉讼结构公正、完善刑事诉讼证据规则等方面具有十分重要的作用.笔者认为在实施依法治国伟大方略的今天,在我国刑事司法制度中确立沉默权是非常重要的,而且是具有可行性的,本文的主要目的就是要对此发表自己的一点粗浅看法.  相似文献

As a response to the attacks on ethnic studies in Arizona and the move to ban certain books, this essay presents theoretical and pedagogical reflections from two professors and addresses the ways teacher preparation programs can offer a resistance. Based on the authors’ experience in teacher preparation programs, one in the humanities and the other in mathematics, they discuss fundamental concepts that undergird social change methodology from Gloria Anzaldúa (la facultad and conocimiento) and from Isabel Gunning’s work (World Traveling). Ultimately, our premise is that teachers of teachers can impact the curricula in significant ways that result in dismantling racism and in teaching that is focused on positive social change. We posit that the university classroom where future teachers are trained must address (1) Equity issues, (2) Cultural identity or cultural framing, and (3) Culturally relevant strategies and teaching, modeled by the university professor.  相似文献

This article describes one approach to teaching Information Management (IM) at honours degree level that the authors helped develop and deliver at Napier University Business School, namely 'Information Challenges' . Information Challenges provides a flexible framework upon which to teach the diverse and rapidly changing area of IM, as well as learning about current thinking and practice from leading academics and practitioners from industry and commerce. This article identifies the main areas of study within the field of IM and explores the main teaching and learning methods that were adopted and implemented within the Information Challenges approach. The main lessons learnt from developing and applying the Information Challenges approach will be highlighted, along with a number of issues that may emerge in the future.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to identify factors that create a positive climate for diversity and to demonstrate how these factors predict outcomes related to achieving a positive campus climate for diversity. Based on survey data collected from 437 staff members employed at a large, public, predominantly White university in the Midwest, results suggest that the institution’s ability to achieve a positive climate for diversity reflects not only the personal characteristics of the staff member (race, gender, education level, and age) but also their perceptions of their immediate work environment. ABSTRACT

This article provides a prospective model syllabus for graduate-level social work courses exploring the interactions between social work and race—both historical and present, both productive and problematic—and makes an argument for this subject matter’s relevance for a course to be implemented in the graduate-level curriculum of social work programs. Instructors can view this syllabus as a template they can customize for their own purposes and contexts, and thus it should not be viewed as fixed, comprehensive, or definitive. Due to the evolutionary nature of research, language, and terms, the syllabus, of course, will need constant revision; but it is conceived as offering a curation of resources, thereby providing a starting point for education on this important topic, at least for this moment in time.  相似文献

This article responds to three articles in the most recent issue of The Journal of Jewish Education (74:1) in which a variety of researchers examined Bible teaching that employed an approach to Bible pedagogy that had been characterized by the present author as “the Contextual orientation” in his previously published book, Textual Knowledge: Teaching the Bible in Theory and in Practice. The article responds to these three empirical studies in the light of the theory that he had previously articulated and explores issues, complexities and new insights that are raised by the suite of articles. In particular the article looks at various uses of the “The Documentary Hypothesis” as they appear in the empirical studies and it explores complexities in the relationship between the Contextual orientation and other orientations (particularly “Personalization”) that were raised by these three studies, many of which were not anticipated in the author's original work.  相似文献

Long-term ethnographic data on the daily lives of undocumented students, their teachers, and administrators reveal the effects of fear of deportation (De Genova,?2002) on the routine of a high school. Thirty years after Plyler v. Doe guaranteed the educational rights of undocumented students, this study finds many factors contributing to the creation of a Circle of Silence around these students’ rights and access to schooling that threatens the educational opportunities of a significant population of immigrant students. The implications of this study reveal how schools can become a space to interrupt this vicious cycle through awareness, counseling, and advocacy.  相似文献

Diversity is becoming an increasingly important consideration in the consultation field. Consultants are often in a unique position to make significant individual and organizational change with respect to diversity. As the field beings to develop cross-cultural consultation competencies and skills, it is important to emphasize the sociopolitical factors of diversity, specifically oppression. Lessons learned from a course on White racism are presented, with a focus on strategies for identifying and changing contemporary racist behavior. These lessons are presented as useful foundations for training preservice or inservice consultants to address diversity concerns and related systems of oppression.  相似文献
