As we all know, William Faulkner shows really concern for the Southern people, especially the Southern women who suffer the most. In Faulkner’s works women characters play an important role, which is confirmed. After the theories of feminist literary come to understand Faulkner criticism, critics to Faulkner’s novels drafting an encouraging response detect the author himself either as a pro-feminist or a misogynist. On analyzing the woman characters through Addie and Lena Grove—the women images in As I Lay Dying and Light in August, we found out that Faulkner is neither simple a pro-feminist nor a misogynist in the patriarchal society.  相似文献

It is widely acknowledged that men and women are different from each other in their individuality, value image and status, which lead to the variations in their language styles and language uses. This thesis will mainly discuss the speech differences between men and women, differences between linguistic representations of men and women, and possible explanations on language differences related to gender.By analyzing these differences,we found that the different roles men and women play as well as the different status they enjoy are the main reasons of these differences.Language and social reality are closely connected.Language not only reflects reality but also helps to construct reality. The roles women play in the society as well as their social status foredoom their discriminated "famine" language.  相似文献

According to human history, there are varieties of ways through which the feminine aspect of nature faced and in many cases, overcame oppression. One of the ways this phenomenon displays itself is in the literary works that we deem as realistic and an expression of the norms and customs of the society in question.Sister Carrie and My Antonia are two such literary pieces that embody the struggles and triumphs of women in the 19th and most of the early 20th century. In creating such monumental and naturalistic adaptations, both authors are able to present the case of two migratory women from different backgrounds but confined by the norms and mannerisms of the society around them. The struggles that each of these characters undergoes is an expression of the underlying constraints that the paternal and chauvinistic society of their time places upon both women and the natural world. The eco-feminist agenda, however, gets a more elaborate representation in My Antonia than in Sister Carrie due to a variety of factors that serve to illuminate the differences between these two iconic stories. This paper makes a thorough comparison between two literary works—Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser and My Antonia by Willa Cather from the perspective of eco-feminism.  相似文献

In most of Lawrence’s works, men are described to be handsome, healthy and energetic superficially, yet women may probe into their inner world to know them better. But under the disguise of their attractive appearance, women have found that men are evil, selfish, cold-blooded, hypocritical and degraded. They are criminals to the nature ,women , children and even to themselves. This essay will ana lyze women’s views on the male world in details.  相似文献

Establishing the NCEDL (National Centre for E-learning and Distance Learning), electronic universities are some initiatives to introduce e-learning to the KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), which have led to a fast, strong, and impressive movement toward e-learning in the Kingdom. However, e-learning in Saudi Arabia is still in the early stage of its development due to many challenges of e-learning that will still have to be faced. E-learning in Saudi higher education has been examined in a number of studies. Yet, focusing on e-learning among Saudi women through the social and religious customs of society is not sufficiently examined. Therefore, this research seeks to investigate the possibilities that exist for the utilization of e-learning in the enhancement of the higher education opportunities of women in Saudi Arabia within the social customs and religious beliefs by identifying the barriers to higher education for Saudi women, the modes of e-learning that currently exist within the higher education programmes in the Saudi higher education system, how e-learning can support higher education opportunities for women in Saudi Arabia, and a successful model of e-learning to improve higher education opportunities for women in the KSA. In order to achieve the aim of this research, a pilot study was made by using a semi-structured interview as a method of data collection from Saudi females who live with their related (mahram) male in the United Kingdom and a three stage coding analysis of the grounded theory analyzing the data collected from the field to formulate a theory and a model. A primarily model was presented which described the contributions of e-learning to higher education of Saudi women. The model is presented consisting of three main categories: (1) social and religious barriers; (2) women's use of the Intemet; and (3) women's use of e-learning, as well as a number of sub-subcategories. In addition, the need to illuminate the ability of Saudi women to convert e-learning into a valuable educational achievement is demonstrated. The next stage of our research will investigate all of the issues indicated by the pilot study in order to improve the success of using e-learning for Saudi women's higher education and eventually to devise a research theory.  相似文献

Both the two short novels The Short Happy Life of Francis Macombev by Hemingway and Barn Burning by Faulkner are well-known.Macomber and Sartoris are protagonists in these two novels respectively. Both of them were betrayers to some one and to themselves;both of them had the important transformation in their life and grew mature. This article is making a comparison between these two novels from the perspective of rite of passage to explore their common theme:To Be is much more important than Not To Be,a life with self-determination and self-respect is much more significant than a life without self-judgment and dominated.  相似文献

Throughout American literary history, women have experienced more transition in their roles,as a result of changing social norms, than any other class. At first, both society and the literary circles preached that women should be dependent on men and remain in the home,in order to guarantee stability in the community and the family. As time passed and attitudes changed, women were beginning to be depicted as characters that were eager to break away from convention. However, the subject role of women was never improved during the turbulent feminism movement.  相似文献

No masterpiece by great writers is single-sided.It is always polyhedron and is bound to show new sides if we read it in a different perspective.Traditionally,"the Mayor of Casterbridge",one of the important novels by Thomas Hardy,is an illustration of the inevitable doom of the patriarchal economy in the English countryside in the 19th century England due to the merciless squeeze by industrial expansion. However, considering the widespread accepted theory of Adam Smith’s economic man and moral man,we could find that man are always in conflict between the two.Someone who are very rational and perfectly informed to pursue their own profits and wealth regardless of others’ interests could always successfully gain their wealth with the cost of losing their own happiness, while others who always care about someone else, put themselves in someone else’s places, and regard someone else’s happiness as their concerns could eventually get their real happiness and sweet life with a sympathetic heart.Adam Smith thinks that the egoism(economic man) and the altruism(moral man) are both human’s natural instincts.Only a moderately prudent balance and union between the two could both develop the economy and gain the happiness. In "The Mayor of Casterbridge",Henchard’s tragedy just lies in the abundance of egoism but the shortage of altruism. That’s to say,he possesses too many characteristics of economic man but too little of moral man. Then Henchard inevitably begins his tragic way with no repentance.  相似文献

Scarlett and Bai Liusu, the protagonists of American literary classic Gone with the Wind and Chinese modern literary work Love in a Fallen City, are two distinct women images in the history of world literature.Their female consciousness can be discovered throughout both works. This paper attempts to make a comparative study between the two heroines,by analyzing their female consciousness which is primarily expressed in the pursuit of love, money and independence,as well as their personalities and destiny. The study discovers that although Scarlett and Bai Liusu experience similar awakening process, their endings are different. The democratic Western culture allows Scarlett to grow up into a rebellious new woman;by contrast, thousands of years of Chinese feudal society decide that Bai Liusu’s female consciousness is not thorough enough.  相似文献

In the history of feudal society, women were suffering from the oppression and inequality in their family and status, and also strict restriction from the society.Their freedom was limited and they could not make full use of their wisdom, and abili ty.But the role of women did not stay the same during the feudal society. It had changed though the fundamental role remained the same. Here in this essay,it mainly talked about the changing role of Chinese in history, from the beginning of the Qing Dy nasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. It collected information, and evidences from two books which were of great value to inves tigate women’s role. They were Cao Xueqin’s the Dream of Red Mansions and Lin Yutang’s Moment in Peking.A great por tion of these two book’s main characters were women,no matter what their social statuses were,no matter what roles they were playing in the big feudal family.Based on the result of analysis, the study suggests that women have been making progress all the time in changing their situation. And the development of economy has given women immense chances to achieve their self-actu alization.  相似文献

What Is Beauty?
It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No, I am not. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets. Whether they have realized or not, women are besieged by a sea of fashions. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?  相似文献

Sherwood Anderson is highly skilled in portraying grotesques distorted by the industrialized society. This paper is to unfold the repression and inner struggle of the two typical spinster images in the novel Winesburg Ohio, the masculine small town, which entraps women with the conventional codes. They achieve economic independence in their earlier years which is their first attempt to overthrow the yoke of man-dominated world. They employ different means to release the deep buried passion and eagerness to love and to be loved so that they can shake off loneliness and repression. However, in the climatic moments, they fail in their seek for self-fulfillment and are doomed to be tossed between traditional women roles and modern awakening.  相似文献

With the development of society, people are increasingly aware of the importance of education, especially the good education on women. This paper took one of the heroines of a thousand splendid suns——Laila as an example to elaborate clearly the significant influence of good education on women's body and mentality. In doing so,it made an attempt to achieve the purpose of giving a deeper understanding of the process, the obstacles and the significant meaning of education on women. It was also hoped that this deeper understanding would lead to greater input into women's education and their more comprehensive involvement in social and economic development.  相似文献

National (and European) qualifications frameworks, the specification of learning outcomes and grand targets like the Lisbon goals of increasing the supply of graduates in Europe in order to achieve a more knowledge-based society are all predicated upon the idea of moving people through to higher and well-defmed levels of skills, knowledge and understanding. However, the work of researchers, from the UK's Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP), examining work-related learning from a number of perspectives, would suggest that the way to move towards a more knowledge-based society is for as many people as possible, whatever their supposed highest overall "level" of skills is, to believe that they should develop their skills, knowledge and competence in a number of ways unrelated to their current highest "level". This means rather than having an essentially binary conception of competence at the heart of the levels, it would be far more beneficial in inducing the frame of mind required of a knowledge-based society to have a developmental view of expertise. Such an approach can address three particular challenges that a "levels" approach f'mds difficult to accommodate. First, there is the issue of transfer-there would be an expectation that graduates would be some way from "experienced worker standard" when they completed their initial training. Secondly, such an approach could provide the conditions in which a commitment to continuous improvement at work could flourish, as most people would believe that they needed to develop in a number of ways (at a range of "levels") in order to improve their performance. Thirdly, this approach of continuing to expect people to continue to develop a range of skills would offer some protection against the development of "skilled incompetence" (where organisations and individuals continue to focus upon what they do well without paying due regard to the future).  相似文献

Why do some of adult learners successfully accomplish their learning while the others drop out? This has been an important question in the field of adult learning. For a long time researchers has been exploring this subject around learning barriers as well as motivations. Not until lately did some of adult and distance scholars start to pay attention to the question of why some of the adult students could successfully push through their learning process even if they are in a disadvantaged situation. Thus, Learner Retention has become one of the important themes to discuss in order to understand more about how to assist learners to persist through their learning. The main purpose of this paper is to explore how adult learners persist through their learning and factors that might have influences on them. Adult teachers and NOU students (including those who already graduated and those who dropped out) were interviewed and surveyed. Concluding from those data and content of interviews, this paper set a model that describes how adult learner retain through their learning process and some suggestions are made for better student learning support policies.  相似文献

Chi Li and Alice Walker are both feminist writers. In their Good Morning,Miss and The Color Purple,male-central ism and the benighted state of women are thoroughly exposed.Sisterhood plays an important role in the awakening of women in both books, but the prospect of man-woman relationship is sharply different.By making comparison and analyzing the underly ing reasons,it can be seen that there’s still a distance between the Western and Chinese feminism.  相似文献

A study was made of different emotions that prospective primary school teachers report with respect to science subjects, when they were pupils, and during their practice teaching, taking into account the variables gender and the speciality they studied in the secondary education. The study consisted of a questionnaire completed by 63 primary education students at the University of Extremadura, Spain. The results show a great difference between the emotions related to the subjects of physics/chemistry and the nature sciences (biology/geology). The scientific subject influences the emotions of pre-service primary teachers, both in learning and teaching. In physics and chemistry, the emotions are mostly negative. While in nature sciences they are very positive. In nature sciences, there is a correlation between the emotions felt as secondary school pupils learning science and those they feel as teachers. In physics and chemistry, there is a correlation in the women between the emotions felt as secondary school pupils learning science and those they feel as teachers, but not in the men. The memory of their emotions in learning science at school is more negative than in teaching science during their teaching practice, except in nervousness in physics/chemistry. By gender, men declared a greater predilection for science content than women, with more of them describing such feelings as sympathy or confidence. The results highlight the influential role that emotions play throughout the professional growth of future primary teachers.  相似文献

I. The Phenomenon of Male-Female Miscommunication There is a saying in Chinese: women hold the half sky. It is well known that women play important roles in the family and in the society. However, women are not always happy when they communicate with their husbands and colleagues in daily life. Sometimes, male-female communication can be the source of either rage or misery. Let us look at the following examples:  相似文献

When you worry about your health, chances are you think about drinking more water or getting a Pap test. But in developing nations around the world, millions of young women are engaged in a battle against health problems that are shockingly simple to fight-health problems we don't even give a thought to. As mind-boggling as it is.approximately 3 million women and girl-in countries as far away as Bangladesh and as near as Mexico-could die this year of tuberculosis, pneumonia and other preventable diseases that doctors have known how to treat for decades. "There was a huge public outcry a few years ago when a young woman in Vermont died of malaria,"notes Nils Daulaire,M.D.,president and CEO of the Global Health Council "It was a tragedy, but one that happens every hour in the developing world."  相似文献
