The Dream of Freedom—An Interpretation of The Story of an Hour from the Perspective of Feminism

Kate Chopin,one of the most outstanding women writers in the late nineteenth century in America,focused on women’s social position,marriage and family,love and freedom to fight against patriarchalism.She wrote two novels and about a hundred short stories in the 1890s.And over a long period of time,critics have considered The Story of an Hour as a work of feminism which offers a strikingly feminist perspective on an American housewife of that time.This thesis analyzes the inner experience of the heroine within an hour and shows us that freedom is so essential to her while her marriage is a yoke to her.

《追风筝的人》是美籍阿富汗作家卡勒德·胡塞尼的第一部作品,一经面世就受到了文艺批评领域和市场的广泛关注,其热潮让文学界震惊。该作品聚拢了一个庞大的读者群体,即有一定知识教养和赏析能力的人。那么这个群体被吸引的根本原因就在于作品对人性揭示的深刻、主题意蕴的丰富、文化社会背景的真实。基于此,从认知诗学角度入手对《追风筝的人》进行解读,从隐喻的角度出发来探析主人公的心路成长历程,分析人性的背叛和救赎,以期能挖掘出作品的艺术内涵和价值,从而对作品的文学研究和推广起到抛砖引玉的作用。     

An Interpretation of Mary’s Tragedy from the Perspective of Interpersonal Ethics

The novel, The Grass is Singing, written by Doris Lessing, describes the tragic life of a white woman Mary living in South Africa. The article tries to explore the factors resulting in Mary’s tragedy from the perspective of interpersonal ethics so as to reveal the suppression and distortion of traditional ethics over men’s spirit and Lessing’s humanistic feelings.     

An Interpretation of The Kite Runner from the Perspective of Diasporic Theory——On the Lack and Pursuit of Cultural Identity

The Kite Runner was the first English novel created by an Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini.This novel has received widespread popularity since its publication in 2003,and it was translated into 42 languages.This novel tells a story of an Afghan boy Amir's betrayal on friendship and his selfredemption.It not only expresses accusation against the war,but also reflects the racial and religious issues in Afghanistan.From the perspective of diaspora,this dissertation briefly introduces diasporic theory of Homi Bhabha and Said.As a post colonial writer,Khaled Hosseini has a dual identity.Therefore,this thesis studies The Kite Runner from the angle of cultural identity in order to put forward more research methods and deepen the understanding of post colonial writers and works.     

“Hell is Other People”: the Interpretation of Inter-human Relationship in AClockwork Orange from the Perspective of Existentialism

Anthony Burgess’s novel A Clockwork Orange explores human being’s predicament of freedom—the contradiction between Libertarianism and Totalitarianism. The issues Burgess explores in this fiction share affinities with what Sartrean existentialism elucidate. This paper attempts to discuss the inter-human relationship between the protagonist—Alex and other two important characters from the perspective of Sartre’s elaboration of "being-with-others", to find the evidence for Sartre’s famous dictum "hell is the other people."     

What Is It That I'm Trying to Achieve? Classroom Goals from a Content Perspective

In this article, goals are discussed with respect to content, that is, as cognitive representations of what it is that an individual is trying to achieve in a given situation. In support of this perspective, I argue that a focus on the content of students' goals can provide unique and valuable insights into ways in which students' multiple social and academic goals might influence their academic accomplishments. Several models of relations between multiple goals are described. First, from a developmental perspective, relations among social and academic goals might be one-directional, with fundamental orientations toward the self and the social environment guiding efforts to be academically competent. Second, relations between goals also can be complementary, with social and task-related goal pursuit independently contributing to academic achievement. Finally, relations between social and academic goal pursuit can be reciprocal and hierarchical in nature, reflecting students' beliefs about how to achieve academic success. The significance of a goal content perspective in relation to other goal-related constructs also is discussed. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.     

The Appreciation of “Everyday Use” from the Perspective of Post-structuralism

"Everyday Use" is well-known story written by Alice Walker, who is a very famous black female writer. This paper will focus on using the decontructionism strategy to dismantle the binary oppositions of the story. The binary oppositions are "Pretty VS. Ugly, Civilized VS. Unenlightened, Hang VS. Use and The Mainstream Culture VS. Non-mainstream Culture". By analyzing, the paper concludes that no culture can be defeated and each culture needs to be passed on. Different cultures should respect each other.

Amy Tan(1952-)is a female Chinese-American writer.As a famous figure equal to Maxine Hong Kingston,Toni Morrison etc.,Amy has become"another pioneer"among the minority American writers.The Bonesetter’s Daughter is another masterpiece after The Joy Luck Club,The Kitchen God’s Wife and The Hundred Secret Senses,which is published in 2001.The novel is about the life between the second-generation immigrant Ruth and her first-generation immigrant mother Luling.The stories in the novel are all narrated by female narrators.Through her novels,Amy Tan overthrows the traditional Chinese female images,shows rebel and fight of the female Chinese-Americans who are under the margin of a society dominated by patriarchy and full of racial discrimination and construct her own fictional authority.

English Film Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Domestication and Foreignization—A Case Study of Ice Age

Nowadays,cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries have become increasingly frequent,which boosts the development of film industry and highlights the importance of subtitle translation.However,in China,subtitling is a relatively new research field of translation.This study explores the guiding role of domestication and foreignization strategies in English film subtitle translation.On the basis of material from Ice Age,the paper carries on the analysis of film subtitle translation in terms of expressions with typical cultural features and idiomsproverbs under the effective guidance of domestication and foreignization translation strategies.It’s concluded that domestication and foreignization strategies can provide theoretical guidance for subtitling and appropriate combination of the two strategies can achieve better translation effects.     

The Study on Lin Yutang’s Translation from the Perspective of Aesthetics

Since the main purposes of translation lies in expressing to the target readers both the message and the aesthetic value of the source text and making the readers ideologically inspired and aesthetically entertained,Lin Yutang conclusively sum up that the aesthetic criteria in translation should be faithfulness,expressiveness and beauty throughout his translation practices.This thesis mainly focus on the aesthetic criteria of Lin’s translation as well as the aesthetic reproduction in his translation which illustrates the unity reached in Lin’s translation in terms of both the aesthetic features and the loyalty to the meaning.     

The Role of Doctoral Advisors: A Look at Advising from the Advisor’s Perspective

The doctoral advisor is said to be one of the most important persons—if not the single most critical person—with whom doctoral students will develop a relationship during their doctoral degree programs (Baird 1995). However, we have limited knowledge regarding how doctoral advisors see their roles and responsibilities as advisors. Therefore, through in-depth interviews, we explored the perceptions of 25 exemplary doctoral advisors, who have graduated a large number of doctoral students, about their roles and responsibilities as advisors. We conclude this article with implications for doctoral education.

Interpretation of the PPVT-R: A pure measure of verbal comprehension?

The present study examined WISC-R scale, factor, and subtest scores in relationship to PPVT-R standard scores in order to test hypotheses regarding abilities measured by the PPVT-R. For a naturally occurring sample of rural children referred for assessment (N = 51), the results of direct and stepwise regression analyses indicated that, while verbal comprehension abilities may contribute most to successful performance on the PPVT-R, perceptual organization abilities also play a significant though less substantial role in the child's performance on the PPVT-R. While Vocabulary scaled scores accounted for 63% of the variance, addition of Object Assembly and Picture Arrangement scaled scores accounted for an additional 11% of the observed variance in PPVT-R performance. Students for whom the PPVT-R overestimated WISC-R Full Scale performance differed significantly from students for whom the PPVT-R underestimated their WISC-R performance only on the WISC-R Arithmetic subtest. Implications for interpretation of the PPVT-R are discussed.
