The development of minority (in this case, black) ownership of television stations as a factor in licensing is analysed through discussion of the Orlando, Florida TV 9 and Hunts‐ville, Alabama Garrett cases. The author, part of the department of communication at Florida Technological University (Orlando), contends that Appeals court actions have forced the FCC to more carefully consider minority ownership aspirations—but that many basic questions need to be clearly answered prior to any definitive rule‐making on the subject. 相似文献

This article reviews talk radio research and summarizes articles from the trade and popular press that document the phenomenal growth in talk radio since 1987, when the Fairness Doctrine was abolished. Anecdotal evidence suggests that talk radio can have a powerful impact on public debate, especially regarding “hot button “ issues that arouse emotion and address voter frustration with the status quo. Examples include the successful defeat of the proposed Congressional pay raise in 1989 and the election to Congress of a Republican majority in 1994. Talk radio is less successful in rallying listeners on complex issues such as campaign financing reform. 相似文献

Although computer-mediated radio promises to open new markets and revenue streams, this latest technological miracle also has the potential to further fragment audiences and create new competitive demands. AM radio is alive, although years of misplaced priorities and short‐term solutions have left it in less than perfect health: The essay examines some of the factors that contributed historically to the present condition. AM is still viable and can regain parity with FM, if not dominance in the field, by throwing off old strictures and stereotypes, and by taking steps toward more bold and innovative programming. The medium is perfect for listener interaction and participation. AM technology doesn't need an overhaul, but the thinking of AM management does. 相似文献

在新闻史研究中,有学者对目前我国广为应用的实证史学的研究方法提出质疑,认为新闻史研究应当更多地借鉴西方"新史学"的研究思路与方法,并且重申"一切历史都是当代史,一切历史都是思想史,一切历史都是文学史"的命题。文本从认识论、方法论的角度,对"新史学"流派的主要观点进行检视,认为西方"新史学"的诞生及其某些思想具有合理性,但是,不能将这种合理性无限放大。因为总体看来,"新史学"家们的哲学思想是从主观出发的,并且是从现时的主观出发的,在很大程度上带有片面性。进而提出自己的观点:在借鉴西方史学理论的同时,要考虑到中国的具体情况,同时要考虑到所应用的学科领域的具体情况。 相似文献

–The television news magazine genre carries with it an implicit bias that began in an earlier stage of television's dissemination when TV journalism sought to be legitimized by using standards of objectivity handed down from newspapers and magazines. This article contends that this legitimation was attempted by valorizing the rhetorical power of the spoken word and effectively ignoring that visual images carry independent persuasive power–persuasive power, moreover, that often contradicts the verbal and escapes the containment of the objective word. In support of this contention, the essay examines several episodes of 60 Minutes programming. Particular attention is paid to verbal and visual juxtapositions in which the visual imagery and editing choices subvert the stated intentions of the verbal elements. The aim is two-fold: to contribute to critical rhetorical analyses that seek to comprehend the impact of the visual in verbal or print-oriented contexts; and to uncover some of 60 Minutes' ideological underpinnings by casting light on the particular version of reality it constructs, and the beliefs, attitudes, and values it shapes. 相似文献

The use of live entertainers is well-documented on radio networks, but not for local stations in rural America. This study examines the period of decline in the use of live entertainers starting in 1940 and the pinnacle of live performance on WDZ, an independent broadcaster in central Illinois that featured folk and hillbilly style entertainment. World War II, the FCC's tolerance for recordings, union struggles, and changing management emphasis from programming to sales were factors in the live performance decline. Management transitioned from emphasizing local interests to maximizing economic return with less expensive programming while relocating to a larger market. 相似文献

Talk radio has evolved into the town meeting of the 1990s. Talk radio's success comes from a combination of powerful personalities, audience involvement, and propagandistic appeals. Talk radio has become so powerful as to prompt the president of the United States to denounce many of its practitioners. Radio listeners need to understand how public figures use the media to manipulate the airwaves and their messages to influence the masses. This paper critically examines conservative talk radio figures using Father Charles Coughlin, the famous “radio priest” of the Shrine of the Little Flower, as the locus of comparison. The authors analyze the radio discourse of Coughlin, contemporary national figures such as Rush Limbaugh, and a Detroit‐area commentator, Mark Scott. Traditional propaganda analysis facilitates understanding of the rhetorical force of talk radio and enables the public to increase their awareness of and ability to deal with propaganda. 相似文献

Global television programming fairs (MIP-TV, MIPCOM, NATPE) have received little attention from media scholars. Nevertheless, as this article demonstrates, these fairs serve a variety of crucial business and cultural functions in international television trade. Although they have come under fire recently from executives and industry observers alike, this article argues that such fairs are semi-permanent features of the international syndication industry. As such, they warrant more serious consideration by media scholars from numerous disciplinary backgrounds who hope to understand both the economic and cultural operations of television globalization. 相似文献

新闻传播史呈现给人们的总体印象是一个完整、混沌的系统结构。要将新闻传播史的研究推向深入,必须对这一混沌的整体进行解析。合理的解析是将其细分为三个层次或子系统:新闻传播事业、新闻传播制度、新闻传播观念。它们彼此依赖,相辅相成。其中,新闻传播事业始终是最活跃、最积极的因素;新闻传播制度则相对地比较滞后,具有一定的持久性、适应性和稳定性;新闻传播观念虽然是主体对于新闻传播实践的能动的反映,但是科学的观念能转化成物质的力量,成为新闻传播事业、新闻传播制度设计的指南。要解构披着历史外衣的政治与社会神话,必须建构起新闻传播事业、新闻传播制度和新闻传播观念彼此交融的统一的三维历史空间。 相似文献
