Use of Special Collections as an Opportunity for Outreach in the Academic Library

ABSTRACT

Academic special collections librarians have made great strides in making their collections discoverable and accessible to a wide audience. This article examines use of special collections departments and the many kinds of outreach librarians undertake to increase access to and knowledge of their collections, including creating electronic finding aids, digitizing material, collaborating with faculty, increasing participation in instruction and reference, and using exhibits, social media, and relationships with community partners to further the mission and goals of the library and the college or university. The article uses the University of Illinois at Chicago Special Collections Department as a case study.     

Rural Public Library Outreach Services and Elder Users: A Case Study of the Washington County (VA) Public Library

ABSTRACT

Outreach services provided by rural public libraries are crucial to fulfilling their mission to provide information access to the widest array of user groups. Particular socioeconomic and geographic factors in rural areas present challenges of access to information resources, yet there exists only a limited amount of published scholarly work examining outreach services provided specifically by rural public libraries. This case study of outreach services to elder users offers contextual evidence for the centrality of social equity and access to the larger work of rural public libraries. Primary data were collected through four semi-structured focus group meetings conducted with elder users of the agency’s outreach services as well as through narrative interviews with six agency staff members. Principal findings showed that elder users had particular information needs related to entertainment and intellectual stimulation, challenges of transportation, and a limited access to technology and internet service. WCPL outreach services were found to positively impact the lives and general well-being of elder users by providing vital social and community connections and serving as a key link for elder users to an institution understood to be central to the life of the community in general.     

From the Ground Up: Creating a Sustainable Library Outreach Program for International Students

In spring 2014, the Henry Madden Library at Fresno State implemented an outreach program for incoming international students consisted of a campus orientation presentation, library orientation and tours, information literacy workshops, and international peer-advisor training. Assessment as a result of the program has shown a high level of use of help services among international students, as well as moderately higher use of several services and resources amongst students who attended the library orientation.     

Aggressively Helpful: A Case Study of Innovative Outreach to Special Library Patrons

This article is written by Kris Turner is the Associate Director of Public Services at the University of Wisconsin Law Library. He holds a MLS from the University of Wisconsin. He is currently attending University of Wisconsin Law School part-time and expects to receive his JD in 2020. Special libraries must effectively communicate value to prove the library’s worth to stakeholders making budgetary decisions. The University of Wisconsin Law Library embarked on a campaign of aggressive helpfulness to better serve existing patrons and reach under-served populations. The library implemented a three-pronged strategy that used formal workshops, informal events, and social media to emphasize the value the library provides. This article discusses the techniques used by the law library to better communicate value through aggressive helpfulness and provides tips on how other special libraries can successfully implement their own proactive outreach.     

Public Library Services for Veterans: Selected Brief Case Studies

Public libraries across the country design and deliver programs for military veterans and their families, often collaborating with other organizations and agencies. The examples were assembled from both general and specialized interviews with librarians, and literature and Internet searches, with summaries of programs assembled and written by multiple researchers. The specific limitations on the listing in this article are clearly outlined in the first section. Overall, however, the article provides a good introductory overview of what’s going on in veteran’s programs and services in America’s public libraries in over seventy libraries in forty states. We hope this list of what public libraries have organized or are doing will supply other public librarians with ideas on how to provide new services or enhance their existing ones.     

Health Sciences Library Support of a University Common Reading Program: A Case Study

Common reading programs have become increasingly popular on college and university campuses as a means for increasing student engagement, retention, and success. This article describes the characteristics, goals, and benefits of common reading programs and provides examples from the literature of academic library involvement in them. Finally, an example is provided of how one academic health sciences library participated in its institution’s First-Year Summer Reading program.

多媒体信息发布系统是一种应用型媒体整合传播系统,它是直接面向用户提供公共服务、保障信息畅通的重要手段。作为一座新近建设的图书馆,清华大学人文社科图书馆设计并应用了多媒体信息发布系统。该系统主要包括节目编辑和发送、节目管理和发布两大模块,其发布内容融合了多种媒体信息资料,在图书馆各功能区域得到广泛应用,取得了良好成效。在设计与应用多媒体信息发布系统的过程中,我们应对多媒体信息发布系统的优缺点有清晰认识,要在充分发挥多媒体信息发布系统优势的同时,实现多媒体信息发布系统与其他媒体的优势互补。

随着高职教育"校企合作"人才培养模式的确立和不断推进,合作企业逐步成为高职教育的主体之一,高职图书馆如何面向合作企业提供信息保障和服务,已成为当前急需研究和探索的问题。通过对我院合作企业的调研,掌握了企业对信息服务的需求状况,就高职图书馆如何开展企业信息服务提出了相应的对策。     

Understanding Ultimate Use Data and Its Implication for Digital Library Management: A Case Study

Information professionals and librarians have been studying, discussing, and developing digital libraries for more than two decades, but understanding ultimate use of images from digital libraries remains a mystery for many of them. Most articles written on digital library use focus on users’ search retrieval needs and behavior. Few mention how digital library patrons use the images they request. Like many digital libraries, archives, and special collections, the University of Houston Digital Library makes high resolution images available to its patrons. Image delivery is achieved by an automated system, titled the Digital Cart Service. An unexpected benefit of the Digital Cart Service is the reporting mechanism that produces data that includes intended use information. This article discusses the analysis of this data to determine why images were used, what products were created from the images, and what implications this has on digital library management. The authors believe that answering these questions creates an environment in which digital library innovators can better promote and design digital libraries, and describe and select the content in them.     

地方高校图书馆企业信息服务新模式初探——以湖北工业大学图书馆为例

结合湖北工业大学图书馆企业信息服务的实践,分析了影响地方高校图书馆企业信息服务的因素,提出高校图书馆、科研团队和企业三者联合形成一种动态网络模式。这种新的信息服务模式,打破了原来单线式服务的简单模式,有利于高校与企业建立长期稳定合作的战略伙伴关系。     

对数字图书馆的版权保护技术的比较研究

随着多媒体技术和网络技术的发展和应用，对文本、图像、音频、视频等多媒体内容的保护成为迫切需要的问题。文章介绍了数字图书馆中的几种版权保护技术——信息隐藏、密码学和数字水印，包括它们的定义、特性及模型构造，最后对各种版权保护技术作了一个综合的比较研究。     

Public Library Engagement in Diffusing a Planned Community Health Initiative: A Dual Case Study

Social determinants of health beckon partnerships to empower citizens to make healthy choices. This dual case study explores the roles of public library engagement in a planned community health initiative known as the Blue Zones (BZ) project. Two cases were examined through interviews, facility environmental scans, and passive footprinting. Results indicate a potential library role in promotion and support for community health initiatives. Findings reveal a need to increase librarians’ awareness of social responsibilities beyond perceived professional boundaries, proactively collaborating with community agencies, and promoting community health initiatives through enhanced information access.

以首都师范大学为对象,探讨了基于互动交流方式的课外教学的实践工作,阐述了其在宣传、组织调查问卷、数据统计与分析方面发挥的作用。在使用统计分析基础上,讨论了不同用户在资源利用和教学主题需求方面的特点及相关性,用户在教学内容、教学方式与方法等方面的需求,以期为课外教学提供参考依据。     

基于可视化知识图谱的合著网络研究——以期刊为研究对象

以《图书情报工作》为例,运用可视化技术,绘制并分析该刊2000-2009年发表学术论文的作者合著网络、机构合著网络及区域合著网络的知识图谱,认为该刊已拥有一定数量和规模的核心作者团队,形成一个以中国科学院、北京大学和武汉大学为核心的庞大机构合著网络体系,北京在区域合著网络中处于核心地位。最后总结该刊在合著网络方面的优势与不足之处。     

高校图书馆社会化信息服务模式探索与实践——以广州大学图书馆为例

广州大学图书馆在长期面向社会提供信息服务的实践中,采用信息开发、业务外包、合作共建、资源共享、业务扶持等多种模式服务社会,取得了显著的社会效益和经济效益,对高校图书馆社会化信息服务的模式进行了探索,提供了经验。     

高校图书馆纸质图书利用现状及其优化策略研究——以中南民族大学图书馆为例

纸质图书服务是图书馆文献信息服务的基础性功能。文章以中南民族大学图书馆为分析样本,从分类借阅频次,核心读者、著者及出版社的分布态势,纸质图书的生命周期与主题等维度,对高校图书馆纸质图书利用现状进行分析与研究。在此基础上提出现代信息环境下高校图书馆纸质图书服务工作的优化策略。     

Handling Internet Connectivity Challenges in a Typical University Academic Library in Nigeria: A Case Study of Kenneth Dike Library

This article examines the practical ways of handling Internet connectivity challenges in a typical university academic library setting in Nigeria, using Kenneth Dike Library (KDL), University of Ibadan, as a case study. Both internal and external factors are responsible for the challenges being experienced in terms of Internet connectivity in KDL. The current state of Internet connectivity within the KDL is presented. Also discussed are an overview of the previous model of Local Area Network (LAN) within the KDL, the challenges associated with the previous model, an overview of the new LAN model and discussion/way forward. Finally, conclusion and recommendations are presented.     

Improving Library Services for Distance Learners: A Literature Review

Academic libraries offer many services to distance learning students. The sources of literature reviewed here offer information that shows relevant similarities and differences between library services offered to traditional students and distance learning students. Likewise, the associated findings from the literature offer insight that is applicable for a project to modify and improve library services for distance learners in higher education.     

2000-2011年中国图情研究主题的“变”与“不变”——以《图书情报工作》刊发的论文为样本

以《图书情报工作》2000-2011年刊发的论文为样本,以高频词和知识图谱为考察视角,发现图书馆学情报学相对"不变"的主题域主要有5个:数字图书馆、学科信息服务、竞争情报与知识管理、图书馆学与情报学理论研究和文献计量学研究。以关键词历年频次变化为考察视角,分别挖掘出最近6年新兴主题、增幅明显主题、消失主题及降幅明显主题若干,并筛选出30个左右"突现词"作为最具"变"的意味的关键词,以考察图书馆学情报学的情境性演变。研究发现《图书情报工作》热切关注前沿主题,在某种程度上引领着我国图书馆学情报学的发展方向。
