Abstract Experiments that involve nested structures often assign entire groups (such as schools) to treatment conditions. Key aspects of the design of such experiments include knowledge of the intraclass correlation structure and the sample sizes necessary to achieve adequate power to detect the treatment effect. This study provides methods for computing power in three-level cluster randomized balanced designs (with two levels of nesting), where, for example, students are nested within classrooms and classrooms are nested within schools and schools are assigned to treatments. The power computations take into account nesting effects at the second (classroom) and at the third (school) level, sample size effects (e.g., number of schools, classrooms, and individuals), and covariate effects (e.g., pretreatment measures). The methods are applicable to quasi-experimental studies that examine group differences in an outcome. 相似文献

A key aspect of the design of such experiments includes knowledge of the clustering effects that are often expressed via intraclass correlation. This study provides methods for constructing a more powerful test for the treatment effect in three-level cluster randomized designs with two levels of nesting (at the second and third levels). When the intraclass correlation structure at the second and third level is assumed to be known, the proposed test provides higher estimates of power than those obtained from the typical test based on level-3 unit means, because it preserves the degrees of freedom associated with the number of level-2 and level-1 units. The advantage in power estimates is more pronounced when the number of level-3 units (e.g., schools) is small and the samples are homogeneous (e.g., low-achieving schools). 相似文献

Previous work on statistical power has discussed mainly single-level designs or 2-level balanced designs with random effects. Although balanced experiments are common, in practice balance cannot always be achieved. Work on class size is one example of unbalanced designs. This study provides methods for power analysis in 2-level unbalanced designs with random effects. Overall, the nesting affects power negatively, the treatment affects power positively, and the Level-2 units affect power more than Level-1 units. Computing power assuming balanced designs provides reasonable estimates only when imbalance is mild or moderate. When imbalance is large or extreme, computing power assuming balanced designs produces larger estimates of power. The use of the harmonic mean provides accurate estimates of power in unbalanced 2-level designs even when imbalance is large. 相似文献

Statistical power was estimated for 3 randomization tests used with multiple-baseline designs. In 1 test, participants were randomly assigned to baseline conditions; in the 2nd, intervention points were randomly assigned; and in the 3rd, the authors used both forms of random assignment. Power was studied for several series lengths (N = 10, 20, 30), several effect sizes (d = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0), and several levels of autocorrelation among the errors (p 1 = 0, .1, .2, .3, .4, and .5). Power was found to be similar among the 3 tests. Power was low for effect sizes of 0.5 and 1.0 but was often adequate (> .80) for effect sizes of 1.5 and 2.0. 相似文献

The latent growth curve modeling (LGCM) approach has been increasingly utilized to investigate longitudinal mediation. However, little is known about the accuracy of the estimates and statistical power when mediation is evaluated in the LGCM framework. A simulation study was conducted to address these issues under various conditions including sample size, effect size of mediated effect, number of measurement occasions, and R 2 of measured variables. In general, the results showed that relatively large samples were needed to accurately estimate the mediated effects and to have adequate statistical power, when testing mediation in the LGCM framework. Guidelines for designing studies to examine longitudinal mediation and ways to improve the accuracy of the estimates and statistical power were discussed. 相似文献

We use quantile treatment effects estimation to examine the consequences of the random-assignment New York City School Choice Scholarship Program across the distribution of student achievement. Our analyses suggest that the program had negligible and statistically insignificant effects across the skill distribution. In addition to contributing to the literature on school choice, the article illustrates several ways in which distributional effects estimation can enrich educational research: First, we demonstrate that moving beyond a focus on mean effects estimation makes it possible to generate and test new hypotheses about the heterogeneity of educational treatment effects that speak to the justification for many interventions. Second, we demonstrate that distributional effects can uncover issues even with well-studied data sets by forcing analysts to view their data in new ways. Finally, such estimates highlight where in the overall national achievement distribution test scores of children exposed to particular interventions lie; this is important for exploring the external validity of the intervention's effects. 相似文献

为了提高聚合氯化铝在电厂水处理中的处理效果,以某电厂原水为研究对象,以液体聚合氯化铝为絮凝剂,考察在最佳水力条件下,不同投加量下聚合氯化铝对出水浊度、pH、悬浮物、CODCr等指标的影响情况.研究结果表明,最佳水利参数为:快搅转速200r/min,快搅时间45s,慢搅转速80r/min,慢搅时间15 min;当投加量为12mg/L时,浊度去除率为90.97%,SS去除率可达91.36%,此时出水水质澄清透明.在最佳投加量的确定和保证出水水质的同时,节约了生产成本. 相似文献

Abstract In some experimental evaluations of classroom-level interventions it is not practically feasible to randomly assign teachers to experimental conditions. Given such restrictions, researchers may randomly assign students to experimental conditions and consider the teacher to be a part of the intervention. However, in an individually randomized evaluation of a classroom-level intervention, unless teachers are randomized to experimental conditions, it will not be clear whether differences in outcomes between program and control group students are a result of the core components of the intervention or the teachers (i.e., teacher effects). This article clarifies the correct interpretation of “program impacts” when this study design is used. In addition, using the magnitude of estimated teacher effects from past research, this article demonstrates that, if teachers are not randomly assigned to experimental conditions, it is difficult to establish whether the program works or whether the types of teachers selected to teach in program classrooms are simply more or less effective than their control group counterparts. The significant implications of the correct causal interpretation are discussed, and the limitations of this research design are explored. 相似文献

Reducing class size to increase academic achievement is a policy option currently of great interest. Although the results of small-scale randomized experiments and some interpretations of large-scale econometric studies point to positive short-term effects of small classes, some scholars view the evidence as ambiguous. Project STAR in Tennessee-a 4-year, large-scale randomized experiment on the effects of class size—provided persuasive evidence that small classes have immediate positive effects on academic achievement. Unlike most other early education interventions, these effects persisted for several years after the children returned to regular-sized classes. The authors of the present article report analyses of a 6-year follow-up of the students in that experiment. Class-size effects persisted for at least 6 years and remained large enough to be important for educational policy. The results suggest that small classes in early grades have lasting benefits and that those benefits are greater for minority students than for White students. 相似文献
