Asia’s First Bat Research Center Established in Beijing

In cooperation with a local government, the CAS Institute of Zoology (IOZ) has estab-lished Asia’s first bat research andprotection center in Fangshan, asouthwest suburb of Beijing. Itsopening ceremony was held on No-vember 16, 2004. According to Prof. ZhangShuyi, a bat biologist at IOZ, of themore than 1,000 species of bats inthe world, over 100 are endemic toChina and 20 to Beijing. China＇s Largest Remote Sensing Research Institute Opens in Beijing

On April 22,2013 , the CAS Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth （RADI）, China＇s largest in the field, convened a meeting to mark its formal inauguration. Its title plate was jointly unveiled by senior officials, including Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People＇s Political Consultative Conference （CPPCC） WANG Qinmin, CAS President BAI Chunli, former Chinese S＆T Minister XU Guanhua, CAS Vice President YIN Hejun, CAS Member SUN Honglie and RADI Director- General GUO Huadong.     

Project on Asia＇s sustainable development starts

CAS issued Regulations for Comprehensive Administration of Research Institutes at the annual work conference opened on 24 March in Beijing. It is regarded as another cardinal document for CAS management after its Constitution,which was decreed in 2006.     

China＇s top 10 events in basic research in 2007

Under the joint auspices of the Ministry of Sciences ＆ Technology （MOST） and China Association for Science ＆ Technology, more than 1,600 Chinese scholars including CAS and CAE members, chief scientists of the National Basic Research Program （dubbed 973 Program） and directorsof national key labs, have voted for China＇s top 10 events in basic research in 2007.

To Construct the World＇s First High-temperature ＆ Superconductor Maglev Line for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing

A high-temperature & superconductor (HT-SC).magnetic levitation train has its merits shared by the conventional conductor type and the lowertemperature type of the maglev trains but hasn‘t the latter two‘s demerits. Its suspension height is 50mm and its technical norms about the smoothness on the roadbed and rail are much lower than those required by the conventional conductor maglev train. So, it is convenient to be introduced in a drive of largescale popularization. Its suspension could be maintained in a standstill state and no driving system is needed for the control of its suspension and alignment.

China＇s largest tropical rainforest dynamics plot established in Yunnan

A 20-ha Tropicsl Rainforest Dynamics Plot, located in Xishuangbanna in southwestern Y-unnan Province, was recently established by the CAS Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden （XTBG） and the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve Administration recently.     

China＇s 10 most significant S＆T developments in 2007

Under the auspices of the Academic Divisions of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences （CAS） and the Chinese Academy of Engineering （CAE） and Science Times, a selection of the 10 most significant S＆T developments in China in 2007 was recently made in Beijing. Some 540 Members of CAS and CAE took part in the voting. Its results were released on 20 January.
