How to Improve College Students' English Reading Comprehension

To improve college students'reading comprehension,the author studies student factors-patience and reading motivation.The author views that reading motivation is the main element,and analyzes the instrumental motivation,enjoys mental motivation and the relation between the reading proficiency and the above motivations.Therefore,advice on the English reading teaching is put forward.     

Motivation and Second Language Acquisition

In this paper,first the author provides a brief review of contemporary psychological views on motivation and motivation in SLL.The author then discusses Williams and Burden’ s (1997) cognitive model of motivation,which suggests that both internal and external factors are significant in motivation.And next the author selects two internal factors (attitudes to language learning in general and attitudes to target language community and culture) and two external factors (parents and teachers),discussing their relevance to motivation in language learning.After that the author refers in her answer both to the wider literature on motivation and her own experience of motivation as a language teacher and learner.The author concludes the paper by drawing some practical implications from employing this model.     

Oral Teaching English in Senior School under the Guide of Motivation Theories

Oral English is always ignored by teaching in senior school.After years of learning,as we all know most students are so called high scores and low abilities,or what they obtain is so-called"mute English".At present,the English teaching in high school mainly emphasis on written examination ability,so the senior student master certain elementary reading,writing and listen ing skills while their speaking competence is poor.The author made some analysis from different aspects of the present situation of senior students and worked out some ways according to the motivation theory in order to arouse students to improve their speaking competence.     

Analysis of “Reading and Writing Book (Book I)” of “21~(st) Century College English”

The quality of course books decides the quality of teaching. It is important to evaluate course books. The author analyzes "Reading and Writing Book" of "21st Century College English" based on the Nuttal’s reading model. Firstly, this model is presented in the open- ing part. Secondly, then the author discusses suitability of the course book from its content variety, authenticity and the training of language skills. Thirdly, how Nuttal’s reading prin- ciples and reading skills are reflected in such book is analyzed. Based on the discussion and analysis, conclusions are drawn that it is suitable for reading instruction; many of the reading principles and reading skills are well embodied and trained in this book. Finally suggestions are presented in the conclusion part. These suggestions include: 1) this book should be adopted more authentic materials such as poems, advertisements, recipes, travel guidebooks and so on; 2) teachers may present and train students’ reading skills systematically; 3) teachers should provide more and better non-linear text, such as col- ored pictures, reference book list, etc.     

On the Cultivation of Motivation in SLA/L

There are a lot of factors affecting Second Language Acquisition or Learning(SLA/L). It is very important and beneficial to be clear about these factors in SLA/L.This paper only focuses on one of these important factors—Motivation. The author elaborates the importance of motivation in SIA/ L, analyzes the different types of motivation in SLA/L as well as the function of motivation, also puts forward some suggestions on how to culti-vate and stimulate learners motivation in SLA/ L.     

The Ways to Motivate the Senior High School Students to Learn English

Abstract:Although our country has attached great importance to English education,especially to the senior high schools’English teaching and learning,there still exist a great number of senior high school students who can’t learn English well.Low learning motivation is one of the major causes.Thus,it is urgent to improve the senior high school students’English learning motivation in the present English education process.In this paper,starting with the definition of learning motivation,and based on attribution theory,need theory,the author will roughly discuss the internal factors and external factors,which lead to the senior high school students’low English learning motivation,and then analyze the possible ways to motivate the students to learn English.

Second language acquisition is a complex process which involves various factors. The factors can be put into two categories: social factors and learner factors. Each category includes a number of factors. The factors such as motivation, age, learning strategies and others such as personality, aptitude are also mutually related. A study of the inspiration of content schema in Higher vocation students English Reading Teaching

On account of the difficulties appeared in the higher vocational students’English reading comprehension,the author connected these difficulties with four schemas included in the schema theory,and according to content schema,made an experimental study on reading test.Through data contrast and analysis of two groups’reading test results,the author concluded the content schema had certain significance for the higher vocational English reading teaching practice.

A Case Study of Cooperation between Reading and Writing

The current study is concerned with the integration of English reading and writing in a program which is delivered jointly by Henan University(HU) in Kaifeng and Victoria University(VU) in Melbourne.Currently,English writing and reading have irrelevant teaching contents.In order to make better use the Chinese and Australian teachers’ English expertise to enhance students’ English proficiency in the joint program,VU and HU initiated this case study of coordination and cooperation at a curriculum and delivery planning level for reading and writing.By analyzing research data,this paper aims to measure the effectiveness of integration of writing and reading,to identify students’ acceptance of the collaboration of writing and reading and also to explore alternative ways of designing the teaching materials in an Australia-China English course.The main findings of the research project relate to student confidence,knowledge,motivation which are greatly improved when reading and writing materials are closely-related;trial groups’ writing proficiency showed twice greater improvement than that of control group;integration of reading and writing better uses Australian and Chinese teachers’ English expertise;over 90% of the students comment that the specially-designed materials are useful and would like to continue learning in this way if possible.     

The Role of Extensive Reading in Foreign Language Learning

Researches on foreign language extensive reading program indicate that students can improve their foreign language reading ability,and develop positive attitudes toward reading and increased motivation to read.Comparing to the other types of reading.(skimming,scanning,and intensive reading.),reading extensively can result in gains in vocabulary and other aspects of foreign language learning.Teachers should provide various experience and make students have the chance to enjoy reading.and give them more guidance on developing certain reading skills.     

Fostering Learner Autonomy by Strengthening Learners’ Motivation

This paper aims to discus some practical ways to develop the learners’autonomous English learning abilities.After analyzed the motivation problems,the author strengthened learners’motivation through classroom teaching successfully by building good social relations,promoting negotiation,promoting interaction in the classroom and setting up adequate evaluation systems,etc.The author finds that using the content of regular college classroom teaching as a meaningful context for the development of responsibility can enhance the learning effect.The teacher’s guiding role in autonomous learning should never be ignored.Developing autonomous English learning in vocational colleges in China is our long-term pedagogical goal.     

Suggestions of keeping L2 motivation

How will we keep the motivation during the second language as long as we can,which confuses us,though what the L2 motivation is and how it is developed have been discussed by the psychologists,educators,etc.The aim of this passage is to clarify the basic content of motivation,including the definition,classification,importance,etc.how the current situation is in senior high students’English learning motivation,what should be done to keep such motivation.In the following part,it will be read that the introduction,the chapter stating the content and classification of(L2)motivation,the chapter analyzing the necessity and state of L2 motivation at senor high,the chapter offering approach to keep that motivation,and the conclusion.All of them use the comparison,explanation and cites.     

The Impact of Motivation on L2 LearningA Critical Review of Noels,Pelletier,Clement and Vallerand’s (2000) Study

This paper first presents a critical review of Noels,Pelletier,Clement and Vallerand's(2000) study and then explores Gardner's socio-educational model and the significance of motivation as a contributing factor in second language acquisition.Language learners have very strong instrumental motivation but their integrative motivation and correct learning attitude(or intrinsic motivation) need to be further developed.Based on the analysis,the author puts forward some suggestions on improving the quality of language teaching for language learners in order to make their language learning more effective.     

Culture Teaching in English Language Classes

Language is closely related to culture. Language expresses and embodies cultural reality, in the meantime, culture exerts enormous influences on language. Therefore, language learning is often culture learning. The author, based on the negligence of culture teaching in English language classes, illustrates the influences of cultural knowledge on reading, translating and intercultural communicating, and proposes suggestions on culture teaching in English language teaching （ELT）.     

Reading Testing and Its Validity——with the analysis on some CET—4 sample tests

In this paper,the author discusses reading testing and its validity,and the requirements of reading to test takers as well as the principles which determine the validity of reading testing. By analyzing two GET - 4 model test( reading section), he shows how to make a test of great validity so as to ensure the accuracy and objectiveness of a test.     

The Application of Cohesion in English Reading and Writing Instruction——Based on Diagnosis and Instruction Experiment

Based on Halliday and Hasan’s taxonomy of cohesive devices,the author investigates the deficiency of cohesive awareness of subjects through the analysis of questionnaires,interviews and problems existed in writing samples,and then the efficiency of applying cohesion theory to English teaching is examined through the data analysis of the results of the pre-test and post-test by SPSS Statistics 17.0.At last,the author draws the conclusion that applying cohesion theory to English teaching can,to a great extent,foster students’awareness of textual cohesion,develop their writing strategies,and improve their abilities of reading comprehension.     

An Experimental Study of CIRC in English Classroom in Vocational Colleges

CIRC is short for Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition.It is to help improve students’ English proficiency by integrating writing into reading.In order to verify the results of the method,the author made an experimental study in Nanning College for Vocational Technology.She designed a small teaching cycle of "7 phases with 12 steps"and applied CIRC in her English class.One of the results is that CIRC can improve students’academic achievements.     

The Role of Emotion in Teaching

Associated with the recent research results of emotion psychology, the paper addresses the role of emotion in teaching from five aspects. The author presents that emotion plays a primary role of internalization and regulation in the process of teaching and directly restricts the accepting of course contents, the mastery of academic knowledge, the internalization of learning motivation, the regulation of students＇ behavior and the construction of teaching strategies while arousing the relevant emotional experience, which is the psychological base of effective teaching.
