Emotionsethnologische Untersuchungen zu Scham und Besch?mung in der Schule

At school, adolescents experience a variety of shame and shaming situations, which accompany important processes of social inclusion and exclusion. Shame could thereby be understood as a form of ??social fear?? constituting an emotional dimension, which specifically promotes social conformity. However, there are surprisingly few contributions from the fields of education science or school-sociology concentrating on this subject-matter. Therefore, within our emotion-anthropological study on ??multi-cultural?? classrooms, we give special emphasis on the theme of shame. The central question of this article is: What are the social functions of shame in the school context? Moreover: To what extent do differing cultural standards influence the experience and expression of shame? Our results show that shame-related situations in everyday school life, among others, are defined by peer norms. Furthermore, the forms of emotion-reactions demonstrate how behavior patterns are mediated by their social and cultural contexts. Shame and shaming constitute significant emotional dimensions in every-day school life. Future studies examining this theme, particularly in heterogeneous contexts, would only enrich the debate on questions of school culture.     

An Interpretation of Ben’s Function in Intensifying Willy’s Tragedy from Aristotle’s Poetics

The play Death of a Salesman is undoubtedly the most influential play of Arthur Miller which depicts a tragic life of Willy Loman, a travelling salesman, induced by his false American Dream of making a fortune out of business. Unlike many other essays focusing on the hero Willy, this one tries to explore Willy’s dead brother Ben’s function in this play so as to demonstrate that Ben plays an important role in Willy’s life by making Willy’s life more tragic in terms of Aristotle’s tragic theory. The first part of the essay illustrates Ben’s importance to Willy and the second part centers on the way Ben pushes Willy to a more tragic situation.     

Mother’s, father’s regulation and child’s self-regulation in a computer-mediated learning situation

This study has explored the parents’ regulation strategies that were more likely to support children’s self-regulation in learning situations with computers. These strategies have been analysed by means of new grids involving seven categories of behaviour: cognitive strategies relating to identification of objective, exploration of means, attention and evaluation; motivational strategies; and socio-communicative strategies such as joint attention and request. 62 7-year-old children from Quebec families were examined with their mothers and fathers. The children were asked to complete two learning tasks that involved using LOGO software to draw a picture. Results indicated that parents’ regulation varied depending on their gender; a higher directivity was observed in mothers, more specifically through some specific strategies. Analysis of variance on repeated measures showed that, during the session, there was a decrease in the specification of the objective, the initiation of joint attention and of behaviour regulation in parents; and an improvement of the identification of the objective, planning and self-evaluation in children. Correlations between parental regulation and children’s self-regulation strategies indicated positive links concerning strategies relating to joint attention and to motivation; and negative links concerning strategies relating to the exploration of means and evaluation. A good adjustment of the parents’ regulation and the children’s self-regulation correlated positivel with success in the task. Methodological implications are proposed for research and psycho-educative intervention.     

Parents’ Participation in Their Child’s Schooling

The present study set out to survey Finnish parents’ participation in their child’s schooling and related experiences. The subjects were a nationally representative group of academically and vocationally educated fathers and mothers (N = 391) who had a child on the fifth grade. A great majority of the parents reported that they attended the parent evenings and saw them in a positive light. Most parents helped their child in her/his schoolwork, though some of them were doubtful of their own competence for it. The choice of schools, which was considered mainly by urban parents and academically educated parents, seemed to introduce a new private element into parental participation without changing the existing communal forms of participation.     

van der Pauw’s Theorem on Sheet Resistance

Abstract

The sheet resistance of a conducting material of uniform thickness is analogous to the resistivity of a solid material and provides a measure of electrical resistance. In 1958, L. J. van der Pauw found an effective method for computing sheet resistance that requires taking two electrical measurements from four points on the edge of a simply connected sample of material. In this article we give a statement and proof of the van der Pauw theorem using ideas from complex variables. We also include details of a demonstration of the method for finding the sheet resistance of a stainless steel shim using typical equipment in a physics laboratory.
