Abstract This article introduces the Partnership for Shared Book Collections, a federation of monograph shared print programs. Collaboration of programs at the network level allows for:
-
Reducing the cost of retaining the scholarly record through shared distribution of commitments;
-
De-duplicating efforts;
-
Developing and promoting evidence-based best practices;
-
Increasing the effectiveness of communication with end-users and funders;
-
Tackling large-scale projects and research that are out of reach for individual shared print programs. This shared stewardship of collection is critical as local resources are depleted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and access to print for digitization increases.

For publishers and librarians to work well together it will help for publishers have a good idea of the circumstances and challenges currently facing libraries. This includes but is not limited to budget; libraries also struggle with a complex technology environment, quickly changing licensing, pricing and content options, and incomplete adoption of standards by publishers and software vendors. This paper is a short introduction to these issues and includes a brief overview of what publishers can do to help librarians, and what librarians can do to help publishers. 相似文献

Google's initiative to scan and add book content into its search engine has resulted in much praise and protest. Changing its digitization project's name from Google Print to Google Book Search and adding information to its site did not keep Google out of copyright court. However, publicity surrounding this project has spawned renewed interest in book digitization projects, with collaborative efforts quickly growing. This article will look at Book Search's history, highlight how it has been altered along with its name, and point out other interesting book digitization projects that Book Search has spawned or recently brought into the limelight, such as those associated with the Internet Archive. 相似文献

This article discusses an assessment and deselection project of the modern print book collections in the John Paul II Library, National University of Ireland Maynooth. Following a contextual introduction and literature review, the article outlines the methodology, presents and discusses the results, and concludes with lessons learned. Although this project had its origins in planning for a major extension to the Library, its main aim was to ensure current and relevant print book collections. The purpose of the article is to share experience in the hope of it being useful to other libraries considering a review of print book collections. 相似文献

World Book and Copyright Day was established by a resolution of the 28th General Council of UNESCO in 1995. Its avowed aim
was ‘to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people,
to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered
the social and cultural progress of humanity.’ This article examines the context for World Book and Copyright Day, the extent
to which cultural and commercial interests have converged in the activities of the day and argues that an analysis of the
activities of the day reveal a specifically European attitude to book culture.
