Like the physical and life sciences, the social sciences are subject to fraud and ethical misconduct. The historical profession has focused its efforts to combat misconduct in the area of plagiarism. The procedures of the American Historical Association—the profession's most inclusive organization—are described, and possibilities for further action are suggested. He was history editor at Yale University Press from 1969 to 1971 and assistant executive secretary of the American Historical Association from 1965 to 1969.  相似文献

Research into Greek press history has not yet gone through all the necessary stages, including cataloguing, content analysis, synthesis and comparative study of the data. Only recently have researchers attempted to utilize information obtained from the press as an authentic source of information leading to better understanding of political and cultural phenomena and attitudes, and the reactions of public opinion—aspects of historical research that were not previously considered. The revitalized thinking that allowed the linear narrative presentation of previous years to evolve into more complex interdisciplinary approaches has helped broaden the thematic focus and brought the study of the press into the research limelight.  相似文献

The traditional liberal arts are the key to a good general education, but they need to be revised and updated to include the six skills of information access. These have become important enough to be considered the eighth liberal art.  相似文献

Abstract Art historians can learn a great about art from a close study of museum installations. Knowing how to do installations is implicit practical knowledge, which perhaps doesn’t need to be made explicit. Hanging is a practice mastered by gifted curators who don’t write out the rules. And so, it is unfortunate that there is too little documentation of these installations. Assembling a wide range of examples, this essay shows what art historians can learn from the practice of curators.  相似文献

Summary

Librarians should be actively involved in educating students: not merely teaching them the techniques needed for bibliographic searches, but helping them learn the artistry involved in thinking for themselves. This is not a matter of expertise, of teaching rules for use in academic specialties. It's a matter of creating interactive contexts-conversations-in which students can acquire by experience the general good sense needed to be able to decide in situations, specialized or not, which rules to use and why.  相似文献

Reviewing (whether book, film, software or CDROM) is an often neglected but important aspect of librarianship. The task provides far more than the essential professional service of locating good titles and avoiding bad ones. It stimulates scholarly debate, stirs up controversy, and perhaps most importantly--gives young librarians in today's undergraduate and college libraries a great place to start publishing. Here are some tricks of the trade, considerations of the hassles, and perspectives on the noble art of reviewing.  相似文献

Each spring, the Lilly Library at Earlham College sponsors a senior art contest. The Library Director and Art Department faculty judge entries. The library purchases and permanently displays the winning work. Problems are minimal and there are several benefits: not only does the library enhance its public relations and appearance, but it also demonstrates its concern for students as people.  相似文献

Historians, archivists, and social activism: benefits and costs   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
This article explores how activism by historians and archivists relates to and affects their work and how their work affects their activism. The findings are based on a survey of 195 historians (including educators) and archivists who self-identified as “someone who takes part in activities that are intended to achieve social or political change, especially someone who is a member of an organization.” The respondents participate in a wide variety of causes. Typically, their activities as activists reflect their professional skills and concerns, with a large majority involved in collecting and preserving the records of activist organizations. The article examines the benefits and costs for employers of employee activism, concluding the benefits outweigh the costs. The article also examines how activism affects the relationship between employers and their activist employees. While many activists receive recognition and other benefits from their employers for their activism, a minority suffers negative consequences up to and including firing and a substantial number feel inhibited from activism by their employers. The article also explores the effects of activism for the different occupational groups, determining that they are relatively similar but with some differences.  相似文献

The present paper analyzes two prominent art history-based CD-ROMs published in 1996 and 1997, and suggests trends in the information and interface design of cultural multimedia programs. It reviews first- and second-generation feature sets, and assesses the initial impact of object-oriented programming. Both CD-ROMs are described in detail, and their interfaces and navigational structures appraised. Other questions treated include the virtues and pitfalls of hyperlinking, the audience for such ambitious projects, the impact of market dynamics, and potential transferability to the WorldWide Web.  相似文献

Prior to this study, the Access Services Librarian systematically improved interlibrary loan (ILL) and related services offered by the R. Barbara Gitenstein Library of The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). She and her staff reviewed and revised workflows even as the Humanities Librarian focused on instructional efforts to further drive ILL use. Patrons’ confidence in ILL expanded. Requests for non-returnables, primarily journal articles and book chapters delivered electronically and within twenty-four hours, increased significantly. Returnables now arrive on average within six business days, more than double the speed previously achieved. Despite vastly improved turnaround times for all material types and efforts to boost users’ awareness of those improvements, faculty members affiliated with the History Department whose students rely on printed monographs told us that they remained reluctant to initiate ILL requests. Moving beyond anecdote, the Humanities and Access Services Librarians surveyed TCNJ historians and their capstone students on attitudes toward and use of ILL. Survey results are cross-referenced with ILL use statistics to aggregate reality versus perception among study participants. Changes in target patrons’ use of, confidence in, and feelings about TCNJ ILL over time are described.  相似文献
