Abstract

At Valparaiso University's main library, the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources (formerly the Moellering Library), student employees are an integral part of day-to-day operations. Students work at the reference desk and must be able to handle reference questions. Since the fall 2000 semester, the Reference Services Librarian has been creating a training program for the student assistants, consisting of an initial training period and a series of quizzes combined with review sessions. Student assistants are also indispensable in Instruction Services. These students are charged with library web site and instruction materials' updates. Methods, lessons learned throughout the process, and quiz questions are used to illustrate the development of the training program. Student performance evaluations and feedback are positive.  相似文献

Professional development for instruction librarians is in danger of coming to a standstill in difficult economic times. COIL on Wheels is a professional development roadshow developed by the Community of Oklahoma Instruction Librarians to allow librarians with budget and staffing issues to benefit from peer training. By matching member librarian interests with institutional needs, librarians can visit institutions in their geographic area to provide their colleagues with low-cost or free training. This article discusses the origins of and rationale for this program and describes a successful implementation of this traveling professional development project.  相似文献

This program evaluation reports on the curricular development and integration of library, biomedical informatics, and scholarly communications (LBS) skills into a required informatics course for a new graduate degree program in the University of New Mexico's Clinical and Translational Sciences Center (CTSC). The course built on the opportunity presented by the new degree program to integrate LBS competencies rarely included in most traditional clinical research training programs. This report tracks the experiences and evaluations of two cohorts of graduate students who have completed the course. This article presents lessons learned on curricular integration and offers thoughts for future work.  相似文献

Abstract

A university library developed a list of teaching competencies with three goals in mind: (1) to improve the quality of teaching in the information literacy program, (2) to create an outline for training in pedagogy, and (3) to provide a mechanism for self and peer assessment in library instruction. SUMMARY

SUNY New Paltz established a library liaison program in 2001, long after such programs were commonplace at many U.S. college and university libraries. The program emerged, not simply from a desire to enhance library service, but because library faculty came to view it as a multi-faceted mechanism capable of addressing multiple concerns. The new library-wide initiative demanded high-level communication skills, an in-depth understanding of library policies and collection development practices, and increased knowledge about individual departments and the college. A collection of campus information resources and liaison training sessions, collectively called The Library Liaison Toolkit, was developed to build liaison expertise in these areas.  相似文献

Data science is a rapidly growing field with applications across all scientific domains. The demand for support in data science literacy is outpacing available resources at college campuses. The academic library is uniquely positioned to provide training and guidance in a number of areas relevant to data science. The University of Arizona Libraries has built a successful data science support program, focusing on computational literacy, geographic information systems, and reproducible science. Success of the program has largely been due to the strength of library personnel and strategic partnerships with units outside of the library. Academic libraries can support campus data science needs through professional development of current staff and recruitment of new personnel with expertise in data-intensive domains.  相似文献

Abstract

A pilot library liaison program was initiated with the College of Liberal Arts at Southern Illinois University at Carbon-dale. The goals were to facilitate communication with academic faculties, enhance collection development, and improve services. A uniform training program was implemented. Budgets were allocated, and negotiations for new moneys were held in a group setting. Following training, meetings were held with academic department chairs, library liaisons, and the library's Director of Reference Services and Collection Management to activate the program. The pilot program was assessed and then expanded to all sixty teaching departments on campus, using guidelines that had evolved during the pilot program. The centrality of the library as a service unit is affirmed in increased understanding and cooperation between librarians and teaching faculty. The program is continually monitored in an effort to keep the program flexible and responsive to changing needs.  相似文献

Comprehensive assessments have shown that academic library users prefer a welcoming environment that provides the opportunity for self-sufficiency. Libraries need to meet these expectations and improve the quality of library reference by creating a comprehensive training program for librarians, staff, and students. This article will review standards for reference training in academic libraries with a focus on one-desk service points and consider best practices for planning, implementing, and assessing training programs for staff, students, and librarians.  相似文献

The University of Arizona Library opened its Information Commons in January of 2002. The University of Arizona Library developed an in-depth training program to ensure that the individuals staffing the Information Commons Reference Desk were able to support the varied and complex questions that can be asked in a resource and technology rich environment. In 1982, the Consortium agreed to work in an advisory capacity with the Faxon Company in the development of a new union list system, and to become the first test site for the system. [目的/意义]调查了解目前我国图书馆学硕士研究生教育的发展现状,推动图书馆学硕士研究生教育事业的进步。[方法/过程]选择学术型图书馆学硕士学位点的培养方案为调查对象,从硕士点地区分布、培养机构、培养目标、学制与学分、研究方向、课程体系、专业必修课程等方面对目前我国图书馆学学术型硕士教育现状进行分析。[结果/结论]发现目前图书馆学学术型硕士教育存在一些不足,并提出落实多元化的培养目标、合理调节学制与学分、科学规划研究方向、合理配置课程体系、重视实践环节等改进建议。  相似文献

通过对西部地区10余所图书情报教学单位培养目标、课程设置、培养途径的介绍,指出西部地区图书情报人才培养存在着专业教育空间分布不合理、教育层次偏低,本科生生源不足,教学方式陈旧单一、现代化教学手段不足,缺少有效的培训途径,师资力量严重不足,教材陈旧等六大问题,认为西部地区图书情报人才的培养,应确立新的培养目标,改革课程设置,构建新的培养模式,加强师资和教材建设。  相似文献

[目的/意义]针对目前图书馆员专业素质参差不齐、新老馆员满足岗位需求有困难、部分馆员缺乏独立科研能力等问题,对北京地区高校图书馆员的培训需求进行调查分析,以提出有针对性的培训策略指导实践。[方法/过程]基于北京地区高校图书馆馆员培训需求问卷调查和BALIS培训中心历次线下培训的反馈调查,从培训的内容需求和形式需求两个方面,通过交叉分析、总结归纳,得到高校图书馆馆员的培训需求,并据此提出培训改进策略。[结果/结论]提出以下馆员素质提升策略:统筹培训内容、制定系统化的培训方案,细分馆员类型、分层开展馆员培训,精心打造培训内容、注意培训内容的多能力融合,以面对面培训为主、拓展培训渠道、做好培训保障。  相似文献

[目的/意义] 总结中科院文献情报中心面向科研一线开展的信息素养教育实践,为科研信息素养教育提供最佳实践案例。[方法/过程] 从服务网络、内容体系、师资队伍、服务平台、服务形式、宣传渠道等方面总结面向研究所科研一线的信息素养教育实践探索。基于疫情与后疫情时期的探索实践,并通过问卷调研分析专家意见,提出科研一线信息素养教育发展新策略。[结果/结论] 未来要形成实时沟通需求的长效化机制,并通过有效激励、开放合作和探索众筹等措施,促进科研一线信息素养教育进一步创新发展。  相似文献
