Activities for a Regional Medical Library: a view of priorities by users and librarians.

Priorities are given for five major categories of regional medical library activities, with further ordering of some fifty specific activities, as determined through discussion with, and a questionnaire survey of, the advisory committee of the Midcontinental Regional Medical Library. These activity priorities are considered a working tool for formulation of objectives and development of plans, and do not include a consideration of methodologies for implementation. User and librarian responses are noted and some interpretive comments are made.     

The science of Kazakhstan in the scientific and technical development of the commonwealth of independent states

The problem of Kazakhstan’s performance in scientific activities as compared with the other Commonwealth countries according to scientific research costs, the number of institutions engaging in research and development activities, the financing sources, the staff number (specialists, doctors and candidates of sciences, salary level, and equipment costs) is discussed. Conclusions on the condition of science in Kazakhstan are given.     

Innovative activities of the All-Russian Institute for Scientific and technical information,Russian Academy of Science

The analysis results for the basic indicators of innovative activities in the All-Russian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (VINITI), Russian Academy of Science, are given. Suggestions for optimization are provided and the plan of innovative activities of VINITI is drawn on the basis on the analysis results, which is aimed at the further development of the institute.     

From innovative projects to an innovative university

The factors contributing to the transformation of a university into an innovative enterprise, which are seen as the introduction of innovations in education services, are discussed. Definitions are given for such innovation-related terms as process, project, potential, activities, system, policy, and development.     

Welcome to Art City: Place‐based Education through a Local Museum

Abstract The town of Springville, Utah, has a multi‐faceted relationship with its Museum of Art. The museum reflects and preserves the ethnic and cultural identity of the area, including its history, its landscapes, and its philosophy/religion. Through place‐based education—including observation and activities—k‐12 children and youth are given opportunities to experience their local culture on multiple levels. As museum artifacts are carefully chosen and lessons are purposefully structured, students receive cognitive, creative, and social benefits as well. Museum educators collaborate with local school personnel, along with educators from nearby Brigham Young University, to produce cross‐disciplinary lesson plans and teaching materials. Benefits Springville educators are finding in place‐based education are included in this article, along with specific ideas for lessons and activities.     

The Blockchain Technology in Scientific and Information Activities

The basic properties of the blockchain technology are discussed to allow informed decisions on its selection and use in scientific and information activities. Specific examples are given and the efficiency of this technology is analyzed.

University Natural History Museums: The Public Education Mission

University‐based natural history museums are specialized cultural institutions that serve diverse constituencies. On one hand, these museums promote scientific research and collections through the work of curators and students and must advance the universities' missions. On the other hand, they must provide exhibition and public programs for the local community, or if they are a state museum, serve the citizens of the entire state through these activities. The challenge for university‐based natural history museums is to achieve a balance among their activities and services, given available resources. In the twenty‐first century, university natural history museums must further adapt by promoting social awareness of topics such as biodiversity and fostering learning in informal and formal settings. The Florida Museum of Natural History, an official State museum located at the University of Florida, is a prime example of a comprehensive university museum with a broad spectrum of programs that promote and enhance learning activities.     

World bank activities in library and documentation services provision in developing countries

The World Bank's lending activities to its member developing countries focus on providing loans for economic development. In this process, the Bank is also involved in improving the information activities in these countries. Many of the Bank's loans include an information component, often embedded within the project. In addition, even if the request for an information component in a project is not stated explicitly, the overall environment for activities with development impact has changed. To ensure that a project is accomplished satisfactorily often requires an element of information transfer in addition to infrastructure components. The Bank's support to these information activities has been limited, with the development of information services or libraries often forming only a minor component of the overall project.As the information age progresses, organizations such as the World Bank are likely to become increasingly involved in lending for information services and documentation support. Questions arise on whether borrowing countries perceive an increasing need for projects in information development, especially given the fact that many of the multi-lateral and bi-lateral aid agencies are working in information- related projects. The issue to be addressed for the World Bank is whether and to what extent there is a need for greater or different World Bank involvement in this area.     

The MEDLARS regional center at UCLA: a progress report

This paper supplements information given in earlier papers on the UCLA MEDLARS Search Station. Four major machine problem areas in the operation of a decentralized station are identified: adjustments required to run a large information retrieval type program in an academic computing facility serving many users; handicap in running time for COBOL programs; advent of the third generation of computers with attendant preparation; and need for constant current communication among all members of a decentralized network system. Statistics are given for the initial operating period, January-May 1966: 119 search requests received, 109 formulated, and 60 fully processed. Parallel searches with other MEDLARS installations, comparisons of MEDLARS and manual Index Medicus searches, and other search activities are reported.

A new framework for digital publishing decisions

Developments in publishing are drawing publishers into an area where it is becoming more and more difficult to assess by conventional methods whether a given activity or product is financially a good thing or not. The article looks at the reasons for this and proposes a new financial framework for decisions for publishers to ensure continued profitability as their activities develop.

通过分析识别出竞争情报在企业战略管理过程中的价值增值活动,提出一种企业竞争战略咨询的模型工具--竞争情报战略价值链咨询模型,按竞争情报在企业战略管理中的作用分为三层,分析其在每一个环节中的价值增值意义。通过一个实例,分析说明该模型可有效识别竞争情报战略价值链活动中的问题,进而支持企业竞争情报战略的实施,最终获得竞争情报优势。     

Preservation Planning in the OAIS Model

The OAIS model has gained widespread acceptance as the fundamental design reference model for an archival system by the digital library community. One of its core entities is Preservation Planning, for which central functional entities are given yet without every detail breaking down into activities requirements. The Planets Preservation Planning approach addresses this by providing a way to make informed and accountable decisions on which preservation strategy to implement in order to most suitably preserve digital objects for a given preservation context. It allows the explicit definition of requirements and goals and offers a systematic way to evaluate preservation strategies. This paper shows the implementation of the Develop Preservation Strategies and Standards function of the OAIS model through the Planets Preservation Planning approach. Moreover, the paper examines the information flows within the OAIS Preservation Planning entity and with other functional entities with respect to the Planets model.
