野象谷,一个让人终身难忘的地方.前不久我休假,带着小学毕业的儿子,去了云南西双版纳.我们是冲着西双版纳小勐养一个叫三叉河的野象谷自然保护区去的,因为那里是国内惟一有亚洲野象出没的地方.……     

Silicon Valley,disruption, and the end of uncertainty

ABSTRACT

This paper reflects on the relationship between high-tech disruption narratives and uncertainty. My main argument is that an economic sociology of the future is incomplete without addressing the ‘demonic’ or rather eschatological elements apparent in the promissory twin rhetoric of disruption and inevitability that a number of contemporary technology firms employ. The conjuring up of liberatory high-tech futures implicates a political-philosophical perspective of the end game. It utilizes at once the productive power of uncertainty to create visions of ‘absolute riches’ and societal gain but at the same time narrows these futures down to one inevitable alternative to the status quo. Through the examples of two Silicon Valley disruptor firms, I argue that these eschatological narratives need to be opened to social scientific critique in order to examine their potential societal consequences above and beyond the narrow geographic confines of ‘the Valley.’

黄山归来不看山, 九寨归来不看水, 这已成为许多中外游客的共识。 水是九寨沟风景的特色, 水是九寨沟风景的精华。 盛夏,水量丰沛,我到九寨沟游览,漫山遍野都是水的世界,水的王国。 九寨沟是世界自然遗产,世界生物园保护区和国家级自然保护区。她深藏于四川省阿坝藏族,羌族自治州九寨沟县西部的崇山峻岭之中,因沟内曾有九个藏寨而得名。 九寨沟地处青藏高原向四川盆地过渡地带,地质构造复杂,地貌形态多样,以生物喀斯特钙化沉积为主导,形成了九寨沟艳丽典雅的群海、奔泻湍急的群瀑,古穆幽深的林莽,连绵起伏的群峰的和谐组合。 九寨沟景区面积6500多公顷。118个高山湖泊,17处瀑布群,3大滩流,47眼泉水,分布于树正群海沟,则查洼沟,日则沟等3个石灰岩质的沟谷里。

Follow the Money: Engineering at Stanford and UC Berkeley During the Rise of Silicon Valley

A comparison of the engineering schools at UC Berkeley and Stanford during the 1940s and 1950s shows that having an excellent academic program is necessary but not sufficient to make a university entrepreneurial (an engine of economic development). Key factors that made Stanford more entrepreneurial than Cal during this period were superior leadership and a focused strategy. The broader institutional context mattered as well. Stanford did not have the same access to state funding as public universities (such as Cal in the period under consideration) and some private universities (such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Johns Hopkins University in their early histories). Therefore, in order to gather resources, Stanford was forced to become entrepreneurial first, developing business skills (engaging with high-tech industry) at the same time Cal was developing political skills (protecting and increasing its state appropriation). Stanford’s early development of entrepreneurial business skills played a crucial role in the development of Silicon Valley.     

An Intercultural Partnership for Social Justice in the Rio Grande Valley TX Colonias

This article details how an intercultural partnership between a grassroots nonprofit organization and a critical cultural communication scholar was forged and maintained via complementary epistemic stances of engagement. The NPO members’ stance was grounded in la consciencia broadly defined and border logics linked to the use of emotive narratives and strategic Spanish, while for myself an ethic of speaking with was comprised of self-reflexivity, self-examination of positionalities, dialogic relationship building, and an enactment of care in representing community members. Ultimately, tuning into the importance of decoloniality via an ethic of speaking with and the necessary strategy of delinking allowed for two intercultural partners to work together toward social justice in the borderlands.

戴圣生平和《礼记》的编选

戴圣是汉代著名的礼学家,治学、从政主要在汉元帝、成帝时期。先后两次为《礼》经学博士,官至九江太守。他于汉宣帝甘露三年(前51)至汉成帝阳朔四年(前21)的三十年中,以《记》百三十一篇等文献为依据,编选《礼记》四十九篇,配合今文《礼》教授弟子,传授礼学。     

孔门教《诗》与《诗》之属性嬗变

春秋后期,诗从坏乐之中蝉蜕而出,诗教变乐语之教为纯粹诗教,汇入既有之德义礼治的教育传统,从附庸走向独立。《诗》属性的这一历史性嬗替乃是籍孔门重置《诗》教目的而完成的。官学下移民间,孔子设计教育造士,立四教,分四科,观念重理想、实践重事功,以《诗》为其文教教材,并赋予其不同于乐教时代的全新目的。较之于古乐官,孔子论乐不必及诗;较之于古师儒辈,孔子论诗不必及德义。一方面持续古乐官和古师儒辈的造士理想的高调;另一方面因应时代,把《诗》教落实到向社会供应达政专对、可以言、言而文的事君、事父的人材,实现了《诗》属性的独立与重置。这既体现了夫子教《诗》的时代性和实用性,又成就了《诗》新的历史功能和身份属性。     

The performativity of the yield curve

This article explores the wide-ranging influence of the yield curve – a diagrammatic device for representing the term structure of effective interest rates on market-traded debt instruments – in contemporary monetary, financial and economic life. Drawing on the expanding literature on financial performativity, including within the field of cultural economy, the article submits that by virtue of its centrality to multiple, closely interconnected and often highly recursive sets of relations between economies, financial markets and central banks, the yield curve is performative at a range of different levels; and, parsing various different extant understandings of performativity, the article theorizes the particular nature of such performativity in the yield curve context. Against the grain of the bulk of the literature on financial performativity, however, the article also endeavors to connect the yield curve’s performativity explicitly to questions of privilege (the privileges of representation) and power (the power to perform) and their unequal distribution. That is to say, the article argues that to understand the multidimensional performativity of the yield curve, we need to draw out its political as well as cultural economy.
