The purpose of this study was to better understand the experiences of African American administrators in predominantly white colleges and universities. In depth interviews were conducted with eight executive level administrators: six presidents and two associate vice chancellors. The interview process used a phenomenological approach focusing on the participants' interpretations and evaluations of their respective administrative careers. The participants were asked questions relative to their experiences which led them to predominantly white colleges and universities, their current administrative positions and responsibilities, and provided advice to African Americans seeking similar administrative positions. 相似文献

The premise of this article is that international academic relations as a field of study need to be defined and given a theoretical underpinning. The authors therefore analyse various approaches to the study of international relations in general and propose ways by which the particularities of international academic relations might be linked to the larger subject. Of importance here is the development of a framework which will take into account the political‐economic role of the university both as a cultural institution and as a knowledge institution. The framework they suggest is then tested with regard to an examination of the international academic relations of the OECD countries, particularly Canada, with the universities of China. 相似文献

专业选择是大学本科教育中一个重要问题。长期以来,我国本科生的专业选择在学生高中毕业报考大学时确定,结果很多学生的兴趣、特长与大学所学专业不能很好地匹配。本文对美国七所世界一流大学本科生的专业选择情况进行了比较和分析,认为专业选择应该尊重学生的个性特点,大学本科教育应该承担指导学生选择专业的责任,我国高校要根据中国的实际情况探索专业选择的良性机制,使得学生的个性特点和大学的学科专业特点较好地匹配起来。 相似文献

This paper reviews recent research evidence on formative (developmental) and summative (judgemental) evaluation of teaching in North American universities. The major conclusions of the review are as follows: (1) student ratings are the most common method of evaluating teaching in North American universities, and their popularity appears to be increasing; (2) student ratings have been found to provide reliable and valid information on limited aspects of teaching competence; (3) teaching evaluations make a difference in decisions on faculty salary, tenure and promotion; (4) evaluation of teaching has been shown to produce modest improvements in teaching effectiveness; (5) faculty satisfaction with teaching evaluation practices ranges from very high to very low, depending on institutional context; and (6) there is consensus that several specific improvements are needed in the current teaching evaluation system. 相似文献
