The 10th Session of the Fourth CAS Presidium Held in Beijing

Chaired by Prof. LuYongxiang, executive chairman of the CAS Presidium and president of CAS, the 10th session of the fourth CAS Presidium was held on September 2 in Beijing. The CAS Presidium is the standing leading body of the CAS General Assembly, the highest organ of the CAS Academic Divisions (CASAD).

Ecological improvement and sustainable development in Xinjiang

In light of an S＆T cooperation agreement between the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and CAS signed on August 2005, the CAS Academic Divisions started in 2006 a research project on ecological improvement and sustainable development strategy in Xinjiang.     

New governing bodies of CASAD

The new governing bodies of the CAS Academic Divisions （CASAD） were announced at the closing ceremony of the 14th General Assembly of CAS held on the morning of 27 June.

China's 10 most significant S&T developments in 2007

Under the auspices of the Academic Divisions of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)and the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE)and Science Times,a selection of the 10 most significant S&T developments in China in 2007 was recently made in Beijing.Some 540 Members of CAS and CAE took part in the voting.Its results were released on 20 January.     

Suggestions on Leapfrogging Development in Tibet

The realization of leapfrogging socio-economic development in the Tibet Autonomous Region remains a key issue in the current drive to develop Western China. In this connection, the CAS Academic Divisions have sponsored a task force of a dozen CAS members and nearly 30 other experts to conduct comprehensive studies on the subject, and presented a feasibility study report to the central government. Top 10 S&T Advances in China in 2001

A total of 556 members from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) recently selected China's top 10 news events of scientific and technological progress for the year 2001. The selection was jointly organized by Science Times, and the Academic Divisions of both CAS and CAE.

Since its establishment more than 50 years ago, the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences （CASAD） has given much important advice concerning national socioeconomic development, security and S＆T progress, by giving full play to China＇s outstanding scientists and pooling the collective wisdom of CAS Members. Reports of the CAS Academic Divisions

CAS is composed of a research complex, which is made up of nearly 100 research institutions, and the Academic Divisions （CASAD）, China＇s top advisory body in science and technology. As a national S＆T think tank, CASAD offers suggestions on major issues concerning the country＇s socioeconomic progress, S＆T development and national security, and submits, to local and central authorities, advisory reports in various fields, ranging from energy and resources, S＆T education, ecology and the environment to medical care and development strategies for scientific disciplines. CAS overseas talent programs pay off

With an objective to establish a highly innovative research contingent,CAS has Iaunched a number of talent-recruitment and training schemes sinece the initiation of its Knowledge Innovation Program in 1998,namely,Engaging Outstanding Overseas Talents,Overseas Review Experts,Overseas Supervisors for Doctoral Candidates,Fund for Overseas Outstanding Scholars,Academic Seminars,Einstein Visiting Professorship,and Research Fellowship for International Young Researchers.

On January 20, 2010, ten S＆T advances were announced to have distinguished themselves as the most outstanding work made by Chinese scientists over the past year, as the result from a ballot attended by 563 Members of CAS and the Chinese Academy of Engineering （CAE）.

While scoring remarkable achievements in economic growth and comprehensive strength improvement over the past threedecades, China is facing ever graver environmental problems, which degrade the living conditions of Chinese people and endanger their health in various degrees, says a research panel of the CAS Academic Divisions.     

Preventing disasters caused by climatic change

China is one of the countries that are often badly hit by climate-related disasters. To address the ever greater frequency of such disasters, a result of the unequivocal trend of global warming, the Chinese government should step up efforts and take strategic measures, suggests a panel of the CAS Academic Divisions in a consultative report concerning the impact of climatic change on China.     

Set up national emergency-response mechanism to scientifically cope with natural disasters

＂ The establishment of a national emergency management mechanism will enable China to promptly respond to and scientifically cope with natural disasters. This is a lesson we draw from the 2008 winter storms,＂ notes a panel of the CAS Academic Divisions, China＇s top advisory body in science and technology in a recent proposal forwarded to State policy-makers.     

学部60年回溯——中国科学院学部历史的几个片段与初步思考

文章简要介绍了中科院学部60年的历史,将其划分为4个时期,继而阐述了学部作为中科院最高决策机构和学部转变为最高咨询机构的前因后果。最后就学部的发展改革提出了两点浅见,即一方面学部要进一步完善组织架构,提升学术职能,另一方面要充分发挥学部在我国科学共同体建设中的作用。
