AbstractThis study surveyed Government school libraries in Benue State before the creation of Kogi State from Benue. The study was carried out using 100 non-pretested questionnaire forms of which only 70 were returned with sufficient information for analysis and generalization.The study focused on how over 60 government school libraries, scattered over a large geographical area with a poor road network and few funds, are centrally administered. Further, the study covered the extent of co-operation between school libraries and their relationship to the central administration at the Ministry of Education and other library authorities elsewhere. The acquisition policy, staffing, processing, distribution and inspection, as well as operational standards are discussed and suggestions for improvement are supplied. Possible areas for further research relating to the study are raised in conclusion. 相似文献

AbstractThis article reports the results of a quantitative analysis comparing usage rates between English- and French-language e-reference titles at the J. N. Desmarais Library of Laurentian University, Canada. e-Reference usage variables examined including full-text use and searches. French-language e-reference titles were separated from English-language e-reference titles, if they contain entirely or primarily French-language information. The majority of e-reference usage was recorded by the English-language e-reference collection. This corresponds to the much larger English-language student and faculty populations. In most cases, the English-language e-reference exhibited very strong to moderately strong linear relationships with student and faculty populations while French-language e-reference usage exhibited weak to very weak linear relationships. In most cases, the English-language e-reference collection demonstrated a greater level of relative use by English-language student and faculty populations. 相似文献

This article reports the results of a quantitative study comparing usage rates between English- and French-language online databases at the J.N. Desmarais Library of Laurentian University, Canada. For Canadian institutions of higher learning, the comparison between English- and French-language services is particularly relevant in that English and French are considered to be the country’s two official languages. Overall, French-language online databases are used at very different rates by French-language student and faculty populations at Laurentian University compared to English-language students and faculty’s use of English-language databases. Where English-language student and faculty populations exhibit consistently strong and positive relationships with English-language online database use, French-language student and faculty populations exhibit the complete opposite with a consistently negative relationship with French-language online databases. 相似文献

AbstractThis article reports the results of a quantitative and systematic analysis comparing usage rates between English-language and French-language e-monograph titles at Laurentian University, Canada. Full-text viewings were collected as usage metrics. English-language e-monographs exhibited medium strength linear relationships between collection size and usage. On the other hand, French-language e-monographs exhibited weak linear relationships between collection size and usage. The French-language e-monograph collection experienced a higher rate of full-text use, relative to size. The cost-per-viewing ratio for the English-language e-monograph collection was higher than those that calculated for the French-language collection. 相似文献

The Frazar Memorial Library at McNeese State University closed on the last day of the fall 2012 semester (December 8, 2012). The building remains under renovation through summer 2016. The library faculty anticipated big decreases in services. They studied the literature to establish baselines for those decreases. In response to these findings, the library staff tried to establish new service models to minimize the anticipated decline. This article measures the decline in library circulation, instruction, interlibrary loan (ILL), and reference services due to the renovation upheaval. The data presented in this study are anticipated to serve as a benchmark for subsequent actions for reversing the decline. 相似文献

To investigate how undergraduates use library and scholarly resources through their mobile devices, the authors surveyed 138 undergraduate students at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in the spring 2014 semester. The results confirmed that they want to search databases and journals on their mobile devices. By examining the functionalities of mobile-friendly databases, we identified the challenges and barriers to using mobile devices to search electronic databases and find articles. The results of this study were used in generating recommendations for the design, capabilities, and resources of future mobile websites. 相似文献

Academic libraries have always strived to be purposively involved in the university's mission attainment efforts. Today, the increase of retention levels is paramount, and, in many cases, it is at the center of higher education institution's strategic plans. For Andrews University, for example, the goal is to reach 80% in the next five years. In the United States, student retention efforts become even more critical due, in part, to declining enrollment numbers set off by soaring higher education costs. Academic librarians are aware of the library's role in the university's overall efforts to increase persistence rates and curtail attrition. Through a literature review, this article highlights how academic libraries are participating in this process. This study focuses on how academic libraries can be leaders in their Institutions by adopting a user-centered philosophy and services that will promote life-long learning, enhance students’ academic experience, and promote engagement, leading to retention. 相似文献

Finding an appropriate temporary storage location for books and providing access to them is a significant challenge for libraries undergoing renovations. The current article describes the use of a document management company by an academic library to store 430,000 books for 8 months and provide a retrieval-on-demand service. Aspects covered include the selection of a commercial storage provider with its own retrieval service; details of the move to and from offsite storage; the integration of the service with library processes; communications and user feedback; book usage during the storage period; overall costs; and lessons learned from the experience. 相似文献

This article shares results of a survey of North American academic librarians supporting campus entrepreneurship to identify the job responsibilities and tasks, skills and experience they employ, and the impact of campus context on engagement with this community. A contextual approach draws on a variety of sources to identify competencies which were adapted and then ranked. Research services and outreach; market and industry research; innovation and problem solving are identified as key competencies. Usage statistics are a regular part of assessment but the lack of context leaves librarians pondering the reasons for fluctuations in use. Through development of an online survey, we examined faculty perceptions, knowledge, and use of distance library services to support online courses. Responses provided much needed context and helped to determine priorities and direction for services. While this survey was a useful marketing tool, results emphasized that the greatest need was for ongoing communication with faculty to increase awareness of services provided. 相似文献

This investigation sought to develop a broad view of discovery service user behavior by analyzing vendor-provided and Google Analytics usage data from discovery service implementations at two Indiana University campuses. The results of this analysis demonstrate how usage data can communicate both intermediary and end results of user interactions within discovery services. The findings reveal user behavior trends, which may be used to develop strategies to improve information literacy instruction techniques, as well as discovery service interface enhancements. 相似文献
