Violent behavior on college campuses has been a long-standing problem that has received increased attention due to recent shootings. At present, the factors that predict college students' violent behavior are not well understood. To increase knowledge in this area, two studies were conducted that examined the prevalence and predictors of college students' fears of committing violent behavior. Data from a single university indicated that less than 2% of the general student body possessed strong fears of acting violently and more than 80% of students had no such fears. Among clients at the university counseling center, 7% expressed strong fears of acting violently whereas 71% of clients had no such fears. Similar prevalence rates were found in a sample of 27,616 clients from 66 university counseling centers. Predictors of fears of acting violently included low academic motivation, suicidal ideation, irritable feelings, fears of having a panic attack in public, having harmed another person previously, having nightmares or flashbacks, and getting into frequent arguments.  相似文献

In the general population, alcohol use disorders and psychiatric disorders co-occur. Despite ample evidence of the adverse effects of alcohol use on treatment outcomes, these relationships have not been examined among college students presenting at counseling centers. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of hazardous drinking among students receiving counseling at a university counseling center and to examine relationships between alcohol use, symptomatology, and treatment utilization. Participants were 214 students who had terminated therapy within a 3-year period. Intake assessments of alcohol use, anxiety, depression, and perceived stress were harvested from client files. Analyses indicated that 33% of the sample screened positive for hazardous alcohol use. Findings provided preliminary evidence that hazardous drinking is negatively related to both mental health and treatment utilization in university clinics. In light of this association, coupled with high base rates of risky alcohol use among college students, university counseling centers might consider implementing screening and brief intervention for hazardous drinking.  相似文献

目的:对大学新生进行心理健康测试,以了解新生的心理健康状况,有针对性地开展心理健康教育及心理咨询工作。方法:采用SCL-90对4966名新生进行心理症状的自评测试。结果:大学新生心理问题检出率为2.3%,整体心理健康水平高于全国常模水平,男生心理健康水平高于女生,民办独立学院学生心理健康水平高于本院学生,艺体科学生心理健康水平高于理科学生,理科学生心理健康水平高于文科学生。  相似文献

Very little information exists regarding the mental health needs of student artists. This study compared psychological symptoms and diagnoses of college students in 3 conservatories (n = 607) with those of college students in traditional colleges and universities (n = 87,105). The study found no difference in psychological symptoms except for increased stress among art students. The study also found that art students in these conservatories were more likely to make use of counseling services than students at traditional schools.  相似文献

This study investigated college and university counseling center directors’ perceptions of the adequacy of the preparation of master's‐level counselors for work in college and university counseling centers. Results indicated that counselors were rated on average as prepared; however, many directors had concerns about counselors’ ability to work with students presenting more severe mental health issues. Findings are discussed, and implications for the training and preparation of college counseling practitioners are presented.  相似文献

本文旨在探讨独立学院大学生自我同一性与心理健康的关系,为高等学校独立学院的大学生心理健康教育提供依据和参考。研究方法主要采用SCL-90和同一性状况量表,对498名独立学院大学生进行问卷调查。研究发现,独立学院大学生的同一性存在显著差异,在SCL-90测试中9项因子有5项得分均值高于全国常模;独立学院大学生的自我同一性发展水平对其心理健康具有预测作用,需参照其自我同一性和心理健康的相关度,采取相应措施进行心理辅导与干预。  相似文献

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant issue among college students but few resources are available to college mental health professionals. This article consolidates extant knowledge on NSSI from the empirical and clinical literature, including common NSSI characteristics (rates, methods, demographics, and concomitants), intrapersonal and social functions, and NSSI's relation to suicide. Practical strategies for assessing NSSI among students are presented, as are empirically informed treatments. With this knowledge, college mental health professionals will have a theoretical and practical understanding of NSSI and will be better equipped to work with students who self-injure.  相似文献

本文采用临床症状自评量表(SCL-90)对整群抽取的成都市某大学2009级5090名新生的心理健康状况进行评定,结果表明:是否独生子女、是否经历重大童年创伤、是否留守、不同的家庭经济状况、不同家庭结构、不同的家庭气氛、不同的父母养育方式,学生的心理健康水平存在显著性差异。因此,高校心理健康教育应关注大学生的家庭背景,并采取以下对策将学生的家庭因素纳入到心理健康教育中:一是大学新生建档中应纳入人口学资料并重视其重要的预警作用;二是充分发挥团体心理咨询的作用;三是主动建立良好的家一校沟通机制。  相似文献

Specific phobias are highly prevalent among college students and can be quite debilitating. However, students often do not present for treatment for phobias and, when they do, often do not receive effective treatment. This article will present a case study of the effective treatment of specific phobia using cognitive-behavioral therapy with an emphasis on in vivo exposure. It will provide a template for how to conduct this efficient and effective therapy and suggest several benefits of incorporating this treatment into the repertoire offered by a college counseling center.  相似文献

Although the severity of psychological problems among college students and the demand for campus counseling services has increased, many students who could benefit from mental health services still do not access them. This article describes Community Consultation and Intervention, a program designed to support students who are unlikely to access professional help despite the best efforts of traditional counseling center outreach. Community Consultation and Intervention reaches into the campus community to intervene by advising faculty and staff who may be the only contact for a distressed student, taking on a nontraditional “student support” role in direct interactions with students, offering advocacy when university systems or other environmental stressors precipitate psychological problems, and providing case management and crisis intervention services on behalf of the university when troubled students are especially concerning and disruptive to their communities. The most novel element of the program—the student support role—is distinct from conventional counseling in that it privileges problem solving, support, advice, and advocacy over focusing on emotions and other traditional mental health interventions. College art students are an overlooked minority population whose culture, career motivations, and mental health risks have not been studied, and there has been little to no specialized outreach to this population. This article describes the stereotypes associated with fine art students and the data available that confirms or refutes those stereotypes. It then reports an initial investigation of fine artists that assesses their mental and physical health as well as their career motivations. With an increased demand for mental health services, perceived increased severity of students presenting for services, and increased number of students prescribed psychotropic medications, university and college counseling center directors have had to increasingly identify psychiatric service options. Psychiatry residents can potentially help fill these needs. To better understand the role of psychiatry residents in university and college counseling programs, we conducted a web-based survey of United States psychiatry residency program directors. This study describes clinical activities and rotation characteristics of psychiatric residents working in counseling centers. Of the 48 residency programs that responded, 27 provide rotations at university or college counseling centers, and of those with rotations, 100% report that the residents rate these as very good or excellent. Expanding psychiatry residency rotations at college counseling centers may be mutually beneficial both to the centers and to psychiatric residents.  相似文献

传统的心理健康教育与咨询方式无法达到使广大学生受益、被多数学生接受的目的,而成功心理教育以生动、体验式的教学方式更易被大学生接受。成功心理学的教育目的是使大学生实现自我接纳、自我探索与自我完善,这一教学目标能较好地从根本上解决大学生的心理问题。为了验证大学生成功心理教育的效果与可实施性,对某高校的1 023名大学生进行了32个课时的教学实践。结果表明:成功心理教育能够显著提高大学生的心理健康水平,这为成功心理教育的发展提供了理论和数据支持。  相似文献

We surveyed undergraduate college students from the psychology subject pool (N = 73) about where they would refer a depressed friend for help. Students from this sample were most likely to refer friends to the counseling center followed by social support options. Students were comparatively least likely to refer to other professionals, indicating that these students view the counseling center as their primary access point for mental health care. Implications of these findings for counseling centers include the continued importance of on-campus care, outreach geared at generating appropriate referrals from social support, fostering relationships with students' parents, and providing access to psychiatric care.  相似文献
