Humanities and social science journals: a pilot study of eight US associations

The paper summarizes the findings of a pilot study for the National Humanities Alliance, including the methodology, research tools, analysis, and initial conclusions about the publishing business of eight association published humanities and social sciences journals in the context of a move to an open access (author/producer pays) publishing model. The eight disciplines represented by these journals are modern languages, history, religion, economics, sociology, anthropology, politics and statistics. Specific tools were developed for the study to enable like‐for‐like comparison of the journals. Detailed information on current trends in revenue, costs, and surplus is included. Significant differences between HSS and STM journals are reviewed. Open access to research articles on publication as the ‘gold’ author/producer‐pays approach would not be sustainable for this sample of HSS journals for reasons articulated in the report. Further studies using the tools and methodology developed are required to broaden and confirm these results.     

Changing Demand Driven Acquisition Ebook Models: A History and Preliminary Results at the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries

In 2016, ProQuest started advertising their new Access to Own (ATO) model for ebooks as an alternative to their other Demand Driven Acquisition (DDA) models. The ATO model was touted as applying the cost of loans toward title ownership to balance costs of purchasing and loans. This article shares the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries' history of ebook DDA and the process of transition to a DDA ATO model.

基于隶属网络的竞争态势分析方法研究——以WI-FI联盟认证产品为例

认为隶属网络分析方法是一种针对多维信息的分析方法,是社会网络分析方法的一个分支。隶属网络的二元性特征使隶属网络分析具有双重的、互为补充的多元视角,能够克服统计口径、时滞的缺陷从而为分析复杂现象下的多维度数据（行动者之间关系、事件之间关系以及行动者与事件之间关系）提供便利。以WI-FI联盟认证产品数据为例进行实证研究,提出利用隶属网络进行竞争态势分析的基本框架,并根据分析结论简要探讨WI-FI技术标准联盟的发展趋势。

[目的/意义]科罗拉多研究图书馆联盟是美国经济危机爆发后,区域性研究图书馆联盟创新快速发展的典范,通过对其详细的调研分析,为我国区域性研究图书馆联盟的建设提供借鉴。[方法/过程]通过对科罗拉多研究图书馆联盟网站、相关文献的调研,对其产品与服务、治理服务机构、工作人员等情况进行详细分析和总结。[结果/结论]调查发现,科罗拉多研究图书馆联盟具有实行分层式管理与服务、重视软件和基础设施建设、重视与联盟外机构的合作、联盟服务对象较广泛、紧跟时代发展潮流5个方面的特点,对我国区域性研究图书馆联盟发展,提出充分调动联盟成员馆的积极性、加强联盟长期发展的意识、深化图书馆联盟的服务、重视图书馆联盟产品的开发、重视扩展图书馆联盟服务对象、重视图书馆联盟间的合作、聘用专门的图书馆联盟工作人员等改进措施。

Wrangling Cats: A Case Study of a Library Consortium Migration

The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of thirty-seven public and private academic institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In January 2012, the Alliance began a two-year process of migrating all thirty-seven institutions to a single, shared integrated library system. The speaker describes the migration from the perspective of a large academic library that was in the first of four migration cohorts. Topics covered include the motivations for migrating to Alma/Primo as a consortium, the implementation process, key post-migration wins, lessons learned, and migration tips and tricks.

Building a Better Mousetrap

Abstract

Businesses and inventors require timely and complete information relative to the new products they are developing. Requests for business information often require an understanding of an industry that goes beyond the scope of services provided by the library. It is important for the librarian to build linkages to community business resources such as the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), or others whose purpose is to assist local businesses, inventors, and new product developers. Patent and trademark searches and other research related to new products present an ideal way for librarians and community business consultants to work together. Such a relationship exists on the campus of Central Missouri State University where library staff and the staff of the SBDC on campus have assisted new product developers by providing patent and trademark searches, and technology and market research. Many clients of this partnership have successfully brought products and services to the marketplace.     

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Reuters established a picture service after its competitors. So why did it enter the picture market when it did? What advantage did late entry give it? How did this new technologically driven business model based on pictures offer the key bridge to the contemporary multimedia company Reuters is today? In this article, the story of the Reuters picture service is told for the first time since it was officially established in 1985. Using Reuters archive, it begins with the purchase of UPI's US pictures service and ends with the contemporary business. It explores the ways Reuters managed to finance the production of pictures; build a new network for the picture service; invest in (and develop) new technologies of distribution, consumption and operation while being constantly on guard through research; study its markets, its competitors and clients; make room for new product lines in the form of news pictures within an already fully operational organisation, and deal with difficulties that resulted from such structural changes. Establishing its picture service during the 1980s not only helped Reuters make a strong entry into the international image market at a time when international news had just entered a new digital era, it also helped Reuters build a strong business and technological model during a period of media industry upheaval. And it used its picture operations to establish an elaborative infrastructure, enabling this forward-looking multimedia business to become a powerful international news agency ready for the future.
