Census 2000 partnerships: working together for a better census count

The successful implementation of community surveys often requires the participation of leaders and organizations in the planning and coordination phases. This article highlights the U.S. Census Bureau’s partnership and marketing model for Census 2000. Focus in particular is placed on the Bureau’s efforts to work with national and local organizations in preparing the country’s diverse population for the next decennial count.     

The TIGER system: a Census Bureau innovation serving data analysts

This article describes the U.S. Census Bureau's TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) system, an automated geographic data base. The emphasis is on the availability of file extracts and their usefulness to data analysts. In addition to describing the available files, it mentions various applications for the data, explains the data limitations, and notes problems encountered to date.

The Census Online: Internet Census Resources for Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union

ABSTRACT

The recent censuses in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union have resulted in an enormous quantity of resources that are freely available on the Internet. These resources include not only census data, but also other census-related materials such as methodologies and questionnaires that are equally valuable to researchers of the region. Accessing these materials online is convenient and free, but at the same time worrisome from a research standpoint in that much of this material may vanish from the Internet. Since this material has largely not yet appeared in published format, librarians and researchers may consider saving an archival copy for research purposes.

Census confidentiality: Then and now

The Census Bureau protects the confidentiality of census records with fervent adherence to the law and with sensitivity to public opinion. Within this framework, the Bureau uses advanced technology to store, transmit, and tabulate data. Because of the responsible manner in which the Bureau applies the new technology, no history of computer abuses exists in connection with the decennial censuses. Our intent in planning the upcoming census is to keep that record intact. This article describes how the agency assures the confidentiality of census information and what it knows about the public's perception of census confidentiality.

CITY2000

Abstract

In June, 2001 the CITY2000 Foundation donated 500,000 photographic negatives, over 500 audio-and videotapes, and office archives to the University of Illinois at Chicago. The collection represents an image time capsule of a major American city during the year of the millennium. Every class of individual, event of the year, and neighborhood was explored by 200 professional photographers and brought together in this unique archive. As part of its agreement in accepting the archive, the UIC Library committed to making the collection available at least until the year 3000. This paper discusses the steps UIC is taking to make this possible.

作者合作网络结构特征及差异三方关系组分析

[目的/意义] 以武汉大学和南京大学在图书情报研究领域的发文作者及其发文数量为研究对象,识别两机构内部合作网络的结构特征及差异,挖掘合作潜力,为增强作者之间的合作交流提供借鉴,以期帮助该领域更好地发展。[方法/过程] 建立次作者与第一作者之间的有向合作网络,统计两机构的合作构成,通过社会网络分析Pajek软件将合作网络关系可视化,同时进行三方关系组的特征分析。[结果/结论] 经分析发现武汉大学更倾向双人合作发文,次作者多与高产作者合作,网络有汇聚倾向,缺乏次作者之间的合作;南京大学该领域学者倾向于独立发文,更多作者作为第一作者加入合作网络,使网络向外部扩张,第一作者之间缺乏合作。     

Computers in Libraries 2000

Abstract

This article describes the proceedings of the Computers in Libraries 2000 Conference held in Washington, DC, March 15-17, 2000 at the Washington Hilton Towers. Both the content and value of the conference presentations to librarians in general and to librarians who specialize in service to undergraduate libraries are discussed. The highlights of the conference presentations and exhibits, conference costs, conference organization, and pre- and post-conference activities are presented, as well as a view of emerging trends evident at presentations.     

Plans for census 2000

This article generally describes the decade-long intensive effort to mobilize stakeholders, staff, and resources for planning and executing Census 2000. As with previous censuses, the goals of this effort are to achieve greater accuracy and cost containment while inviting the widest public participation in census history. This account emphasizes the research, design, development, and operational testing required to count each person in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the island areas of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. It also discusses the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court decision concerning the use of sampling for Congressional apportionment.
