Government and Bank Collaborate to Support Cultural Industries
On March 10, the Ministry of Culture of China （MOC） and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China （ICBC） signed a strategic cooperation agreement in supporting cultural industries. Cultural Minister Cai Wu and ICBC Chairman Jiang Jianqing attended the signing ceremony. According to this agreement, MOC and ICBC will abide by the principle of＂conducting long-term cooperation, supplementing each other＇s advantages and promoting common development＂ in order to encourage the development of cultural industries of China.

Aiming at commending overseas Chinese,foreign friends and public figures of China who have made huge contribution to the dissemination of Chinese culture, the award ceremony of “China Light： Persons of the Year 2013 in Disseminating Chinese Culture”, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Culture, the Information Office of the State Council, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Chinese People＇s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and others, was held in Beijing on December 20, 2013. Senior officials fTom these host departments attended the ceremony and presented the awards to ten individuals and one group.     

A Feast of Dance and Song The 3rd China Xinjiang International Dance Festival

China Xinjiang International Dance Festival （hereinfafter referred to as ＂Xinjiang International Dance Festival＂） is one of China＇s numerous cultural-exchange festivals. It is a state-level international art festival approved by the State Council of the People＇s Republic of China and co-hosted by China＇s Ministry of Culture, the State Council Information Office and the People＇s Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.     

AN ARTIST WITH GREAT VISION：In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of master painter Li Keran

Li Keran（1907 - 1989） is one of the greatest Chinese painter, and educator, in the 20th century. He was professor with China Central Academy of Fine Arts, president of the institute of Chinese Painting Research, vice president of China Artists＇ Association and member of the CPPCC National Committee （China＇s top advisory committee）.     

Cui Junmiao： Plucking Melodies of Youth

Cui was enrolled in Tianjin Theatre Academy in 1980 to study Zhongruan and Liuqin under the mentorship of master Zou Ke, She was also trained in several other string and percussion instruments such as Jinghu （Beijing Opera two-string violin）, Yueqin （moon guitar） and Sanxian （long-necked three-string lute）. She was admiMed by Central Conservatory of Music in 1989 and trained by a number of masters including Prof. Kuang Yuzhong, Zhang Dasen, Liu Xing and Zhang Xinhua. As the conservatory＇s first graduate in Liuqin, Cui was employed by China Radio Ethnic Music Ensemble in 1993.     

Books Released to Celebrate Anniversary of China-France Relations

In celebration of the 50th anniver- sary of China-France diplomatic relations and on the occasion of Chinese President Xi Jinpin＇s state visit to France, Guangming Daily and China International Publishing Group co-organized the voting for ＂ten most influential French books in China＂ and ＂ten most influential Chinese books in France＂. On March 25, a ceremony was held to announce the voting result. Nominated books on the list include French books ＂The Spirit of Laws＂,     

Xi＇an Hosts Folk Video Festival

From October 28 to November 1, the 4th China Xi＇an International Folkvideo Festival was held in Xi＇an.This event is co-hosted by the Center of International CulturalExchange and China DV Commission and organized by Shaanxi Cultural Industry Investment Holdings Group （SCG）. With attentive review and discussion by the 11 jury members, the twelve awards were granted to a number of video and animation works, among which ＂Return Home Gloriously＂, ＂Bass＇s Grasslands＂ and ＂Watcher＂ won the Best Feature, the Best Micro~lm and the Best Animation.     

LI SHENGHONG： DEDICATED TO CALLIGRAPHIC ART

Li Shenghong is currently the executive vice director of Chinese Calligraphy Institute under China Art Academy and has a f professional title as the state first-grade artist. He is particularly versed in cursive writing. Li＇s calligraphic works and critic essays have been published in ＂Selected Works of Chinese Calligraphy＂ and such professional publications as ＂Chinese Calligraphy＂,     

The Glorious Era Showcased on Canvas

The huge portrait of Deng Xiaoping, respected as the ＂chief architect of China＇s reform and opening up＂, is a landmark standina in the downtown of Shenzhen, the first city embarking on the road to reform and opening up in the late 1970s. In the end of last year, a miniature replica of this famous portrait was installed, accompanied by the slogan ＂adhering to the Party＇s fundamental guideline for at least 100 years＂, in the courtyard of the National Art Museum of China.     

Qujiang Cultural Tourism Group Honored as ＂Listed Company of Best Business Model＂

Result for China＇s Listed Company Reputation List 2013 was released on November 29, 2013. The contest was hosted by National Business Daily in partnership with many media outlets as well as more than I00 institutional judges. Xi＇an Qujiang Cultural Tourism Group took the laurel as the ＂listed company of the best business model＂, thanks to its integrated business mode focusing on developing the double industrial chains of culture and tourism. It is the only northwest China-based tourism enterprise claiming the award.     

＂Shanghai Dreams＂ Reveals Cruelty of Youth

Wang Xiaoshuai＇s Cannes prizewinning film Shanghai Dreams （Qing Hong） is rooted in first handed memories. In the late 60s, when China feared attack by the USSR, armament factories and other ＂front line＂ industries were relocated from cities on the eastern seaboard to remote inland areas, and idealistic young adults were persuaded to resettle in dirt-towns like Guiyang to staff them. Less than 15 years later, many were desperate to move back to the urban sophistication of such cities as Shanghai, disillusioned by life in the sticks and eager to taste the newFreedoms of the 80s. The Wu family is a case in point.     

Chinese Murals Displayed in Kennedy Center

Eight visual art exhibitions highlighted the Festival of China last October, the largest Chinese cultural exchange event ever taking place in America, including three terracotta warriors excavated in Xi＇an, a sculpture and installation exhibition planned by renowned Chinese curator Prof. Fan Di＇an, a cloth and patchwork display entitled ＂Chinese Red＂designed by famous Hong Kong artist Ye Jintian, a fashion exhibition entitled ＂New China Fashion＂ co-planned by overseas Chinese designers Tan Yanyu and Wang Weiwei, and the firework show entitled ＂Tornado＂ by Cai Guoqiang. Among them, the most significant are the two mural works created by Prof. Sun Jingbo from Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Crossing： Dialogues for Emergency Architecture

One year after the Wenchuan Earthquake killed thousands in the Sichuan Province, an exhibition on ＂Emergency Architecture＂ is on display at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. Cai Wu Attends the ＂World Cultural Development Forum＂

On November 24, 2013, the ＂World Cultural Development Forum＂ was held in Bali, Indonesia. High-level officials from over 30 countries in Europe, America, Asia and Africa came to attend this forum. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia was present at the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Young sinologists： messengers to spread Chinese culture overseas First session of the 2014 visiting program for young sinologists

The first ＂2014 Young Sinologists Training Program＂ was held from July 2 to 22 in Beijing. Co-sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and organized by the Center of International Cultural Exchange, the program drew 18 young Sinologists from 15 countries, including the United States, France, India and South Korea. By participating in lectures, seminars and other activities, the participants gained academic inspiration as well as a better understanding of China. Classical Guqin Maker Tian Shuangkun

The quiet and melodious music led me to Tian Shuangkun＇s courtyard house in the depth of a hutong （alley） in the downtown of Beijing. Tian is a master maker of the Guqin, a seven-stringed zither known as China＇s oldest stringed instrument.His studio is furnished with traditional Chinese stuffs - old- style furniture, calligraphic and ink painting works, old pictures and the guqin as well. While I appreciated all these, Tian explained to me the long history of the guqin and his lifelong pursuit of perfection in making the guqin.
