The Controversy Over Dual Degrees for Law Librarians

Whether a law librarian with an MLS degree needs to also have a JD degree is a long-standing debate in law librarianship. This article examines the literature to present both sides of the issue and to explore factors involved such as the kind of position the librarian holds, the gender of the librarian, and the type of law library. The author speculates about the reasons for the current status of the controversy and makes some implications for the professionals and the profession.     

Legal Research Boot Camp: One Approach to Meeting the Research Needs of Law Students

This article describes the legal research boot camp offered at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law. It is an intensive, one-week course offered the first week of the summer break to prepare students for their summer clerkships. It is also a vehicle to teach law librarianship students how to teach legal research.

Summary

Although reference librarians today have much in common with yesterday's counterparts, their days are much more hectic. Technological advances, changes in law and society, demands from a diverse group of library users, and an increased workload make time and stress management important issues to explore. This article examines reference librarianship in the academic environment, discusses how reference librarianship has changed, and offers suggestions on coping with the stresses those changes have caused.     

我国地方性公共图书馆立法成就、效果与问题

图书馆法是图书馆事业发展的法律保障。我国目前已经有10多个省、市、自治区颁布了地方性公共图书馆法规。这些法规的颁布为我国公共图书馆事业发展带来了契机,使我国公共图书馆事业得到了快速的发展。然而,受地方性立法的局限,我国公共图书馆事业尚存在一些未能解决的普遍性问题,有待于制订全国性的公共图书馆法予以解决。     

政府在高校图书馆社会化服务中的责任

高校图书馆社会化服务工作举步维艰,其主要原因是政府责任不到位。政府的责任在于认识上重视图书馆事业,行动上加大对公共图书馆事业的财政投入,以促使公共图书馆与高校图书馆均衡发展。此外,政府还应该为图书馆事业提供宏观的法律制度体系,行使领导和组织职能,从而实现跨系统图书馆之间的资源共享,为高校图书馆社会化服务创造有利的条件。     

近十年国外图书馆职业发展概况和态势

以专门图书馆协会为主要研究对象，比较世纪之交前后5年对图书馆职业变化和角色定位的认识发展历程以及图书馆员资质和能力的要求变化，并且对图书馆行业的合作伙伴和图书馆界的流行语汇的发展和演变做了分析和说明，考察了近10年来国外图书馆职业的发展概况和态势。     

Educational Technology and College Librarianship

ABSTRACT

The fields of educational technology and librarianship interact in many significant areas: information literacy, distance learning, the design and management of instructional materials, etc. Given the congruence of concerns between the two disciplines, it is illustrative to relate the historical development of the definition of educational technology to librarianship. This article surveys briefly the development of the definition of educational technology and the relationship of college librarianship to these developments. Finally, the study places an explanation of librarianship within the 2008 definition of educational technology promulgated by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) and concludes that college librarianship is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources of many formats.

The Blended Business Librarian: Technology Skills in Academic Business Librarian Job Advertisements

The purpose of this study was to identify technological trends in academic business librarianship. Forty-five job advertisements were collected over a 5-year period spanning from 2007 to 2012. Ten technology skill categories were identified, and the frequency at which the skills appeared in the job advertisements was measured. This article also includes a discussion about the impact of technology on business librarianship and recommendations for academic business librarians and employers.

A citation analysis of business librarianship: Examining the Journal of Business and Finance Librarianship from 1990–2014

This article is a bibliometric analysis of the Journal of Business & Finance Librarianship from 1990 through 2014. Authorship patterns, citations, article content, and collaboration efforts were examined and are discussed. The subgenre of business librarianship is surveyed from a bibliometric viewpoint, and the resources that helped contribute to the growth of this discipline are highlighted. Finally, content is analyzed, emphasizing some of the aspects of business librarianship that have been written about over this 24-year period.     

Libraries in Georgia in 2004-2015

This article presents a report of libraries and librarianship in Georgia during the recent decade. Consideration is given to a variety of libraries, numerous programs and services, Open Source, library science education, and changes from Post-Soviet to contemporary library systems. The insights about this decade of change in this report resonate with many other libraries across the globe. The in-depth look at libraries in Georgia increases awareness of the recent past, current, and immediate future environments for libraries and librarianship.

The international scene in biological and medical libraries

This article introduces the Bulletin's special issue devoted to international health sciences librarianship with a discussion of the formal structures of international cooperation. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions' (IFLA) Biological and Medical Sciences Libraries Section conducts activities along four strands: world and regional health sciences library directories, mutually supportive regional groupings, a quarterly newsletter, and the quinquennial International Congress on Medical Librarianship. These activities, as well as those of other organizations, make up the formal international structure of health sciences librarianship.     

Rediscovering Dr. Arthur S. Beardsley: A Brief Introduction to His Life and Work

ABSTRACT

Arthur Beardsley was one of the early giants of academic law librarianship. He developed one of the great law libraries in the country and began the process that would develop the University of Washington law library into the cradle of law library directors.     

Principlism and the Ethics of Librarianship

Moral dilemmas are a seemingly intractable part of librarianship. Although professional codes of ethics offer some guidance as to the nature of librarians’ professional obligations, they are generally silent when it comes to moral decision making at the point of service. This article will argue that librarians must augment their normative professional codes with a rational decision procedure when faced with a moral dilemma involving a library service. In particular, the ethical approach of principlism—the dominant ethical approach in medical ethics—is well-suited to librarianship. Pursuant to the principlist approach, this article will qualify the nature of moral dilemmas, establish the limits of professional codes of ethics, identify a candidate set of core principles of library service, and outline the core principlist concepts of specifying obligations and balancing principles.
