Perspectives: Changes in Reference Assistance and Collection Development in the Digital Age*

ABSTRACT

Law librarians are well aware that it is difficult to maintain print and electronic collections in today's law library. The author of this article compares his personal experience in reference assistance and collection development with findings from the literature and from responses to an open-ended questionnaire. The author looks for trends and differences in reference assistance and collection development among academic, firm, and government law libraries.     

Dismantling the Reference Collection

In 2008, the University of Louisville’s (UofL) Ekstrom Library printed reference collection numbered almost 30,000 volumes. Copious collecting and sparse weeding built up the collection during the era before the Internet. There had been considerable reluctance to address its more outdated sections due to competing priorities and inertia. A change of leadership as well as the recognition of changing use patterns had lessened the need for such a large collection. In 2011, three librarians began a title-by-title review process that resulted in an 86% reduction of the reference collection by 2014. This article describes that process, summarizes the results, and discusses the benefits and disadvantages of this approach.     

Literature of Behavioral Economics,Part 1: Introduction and Books

Behavioral economics, a blend of cognitive psychology and economics, is a new field that has attracted much attention, both from economists and from the general public. Behavioral economists have won Nobel Prizes and written books that became New York Times bestsellers. Unlike traditional economists, whose models are based on a perfect “rational man,” behavioral economists study ways that people actually make decisions and incorporate those findings into economic theory. This article presents an overview and history of the development of behavioral economics and a selective annotated bibliography of books in the field.     

Music Reference Sources: Analog in a Digital World

ABSTRACT

Do we need print reference collections at all? In the case of music reference materials, the answer is definitely “yes.” At the University of Memphis, reference titles in the music library are used at about three times the rate of reference materials in the main library. This paper leverages local reference and reserve book usage to investigate how print reference sources support music research of various kinds, how music faculty integrate reference sources into their courses, and how librarians can make finding and using these resources easier for users accustomed to accessing materials online without an intermediary.

This article describes the legal research boot camp offered at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law. It is an intensive, one-week course offered the first week of the summer break to prepare students for their summer clerkships. It is also a vehicle to teach law librarianship students how to teach legal research.

Mapping New Horizons in Government Documents Reference Service

Abstract

Throughout the 1990s, many academic libraries undertook major restructuring initiatives. In many cases, this involved merging a Government Documents Department with a General Reference Department. At the University of Oregon Libraries, a different approach was taken. Between 1998 and 2000, the Business Reference service and Map Collection was successfully integrated into the Government Documents Collection. With these three collections now available through one service point, many new opportunities have been created for enhanced reference services, library instruction, collection development, and outreach across campus and into the community. This article gives an overview of what reference material is and for what it is used. Desirable characteristics of print reference are described. Skills that are important for reference librarians are specifically and generally described throughout. Arguments on the importance of a core printed reference collection focus on convenience, cost, availability, online irritants, actual use of print, historical research, and future librarians’ understanding of reference resources.
