This review essay challenges the practice of rooting educational theory in the economic assumptions that underlie the current championing of a knowledge society . It examines the approaches of three recent works: one book, Andy Hargreaves's Teaching in a Knowledge Society , and two edited collections, Barry Smith's Liberal Education in a Knowledge Society and Peter Jarvis's The Age of Learning . These works deal with the concept of a knowledge society in terms of the professional development of teachers, the cognitive development of students, and the role of adult education. While these books pose critical and interesting challenges to the idea of a knowledge society, they also speak, as a whole, to the need for a more coherent defense among educators of knowledge's place within a public sphere that is imagined to exist on a global scale. This defense is especially important in the face of an increasingly commercialized approach to knowledge that is affecting schools and universities alike. 相似文献

A purposive sample of 10 senior educational policy leaders was interviewed for this Phase 2 of the study from across the US. Interview participants argued the need for: (1) more clearly defining the purpose and value of public education to the communities served; (2) the development of new stakeholder partnerships to accomplish this end; (3) visionary leadership to bring different and sometimes polarized groups together around the need for a quality system of public education; and (4) attracting the very best college graduates to a career of teaching as a professional. If these were accomplished, then the prospects for the favored ‘re-schooling’ scenarios becoming ‘best practice’ would improve greatly. 相似文献

A longitudinal study followed the progress of a group of elementary SLD students as they were instructed using the Alphabetic
Phonics (AP) curriculum. After a three year period, the AP curriculum produced positive results in reading comprehension for
most SLD students, particularly those who began the program in first and second grade. Students in resource and self-contained
settings made significant gains in reading comprehension, although the two types of students exhibited different patterns
of progress. Students of different ability levels responded differently to the AP curriculum. Average and above average students
made significant progress in reading comprehension, but below average students did not advance substantially in relation to
their ability level. At the end of three years, classroom teachers had a significantly more positive view of students’ word
attack, oral reading, and silent reading comprehension skills. 相似文献

The study reported here used the OECD scenarios on the future of schooling to probe the views of a sample of educators identified as having the potential to influence education policy formation in Hong Kong. The results indicated that among this sample, there were multiple perspectives on the future of schooling and these were related to the very public education reform agenda that was currently being implemented in Hong Kong schools. The future of schooling was seen to be dependent on the role of the political process in articulating a clear vision, school leadership and teacher capacity. Mobile phone technology in Tanzania has grown rapidly but there is insufficient data on its application in schools. This paper aims to show how students in the first and third year (F1 and F3) teachers in two rural secondary schools perceived its use. F1 and F3 students completed a questionnaire. Teachers and students in F1 and F3 discussed the uses and misuses of mobile phones in separate focus groups. Although they served similar areas the two schools differed in students’ use – and awareness of misuse – of mobile phones. Most students had access to a mobile phone, but were not permitted to bring them to school. Few teachers could see a positive use for the technology in the curriculum. There is an urgent need for pedagogical resources to support the introduction of mobile technology into classrooms but equally it is crucial that any such introduction is through a process of engagement with the concerns of students, teachers and the wider community with frank discussion about both the dangers and the potential benefits of using mobile phones in learning. 相似文献
