Supervision in Schools: Building Pathways to Excellence

The authors summarize the special section in the journal of Counselor Education and Supervision (Vol. 45, No. 4, June 2006) on school counseling supervision and present implications to guide the practice of school counselor supervision. The implications for practice, training, research, and professional standards for school counselors are discussed.     

Counselors and Exceptional Students: Preparation Versus Practice

Despite the multiple roles of school counselors related to special education, a national survey of counselor education programs indicated that most programs encourage, but do not require, training to work with exceptional students.     

Mandatory Teaching Experience for School Counselors: An Impediment to Uniform Certification Standards for School Counselors

A review of the research on the effects of teaching experience on success as a school counselor led to a conclusion that it is an unfair and unwise certification criterion.     

Preparation of Secondary School Counselors: A National Survey

The results of a national survey regarding the preparation of secondary school counselors is presented. Included is information on core curriculum, elective courses, and practicum requirements.     

Peer Supervision for the Professional Development of School Counselors: Toward an Understanding of Terms and Findings

Current literature indicates a discrepancy between school counselors' reported desires for clinical supervision and their actual participation. To bridge this gap, peer supervision has been suggested as a viable alternative. However, a lack of definitional clarity makes it difficult to distinguish this activity from both clinical supervision and peer consultation. In this article, a definition of peer supervision is synthesized. Existing models that fit the offered definition are presented, followed by an overview of the outcomes research in this area. Recommendations for future research are also presented.     

An Examination of the Clinical Preparation of School Counselors

Clinical training is considered the capstone experience (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, 2001) for preservice counselors. This exploratory study examined pedagogical practice for clinical preparation in a purposeful sample of 59 school counseling internship syllabi. A qualitative analysis revealed wide diversity in content regarding supervision, student assignments, and, in particular, on‐site requirements.     

Teaching School Counselors and School Psychologists to Work Collaboratively

Counselor education programs have the responsibility to prepare school counseling graduates adequately for effective partnerships, consultation, and collaboration with other school professionals. Current practices as well as theory should inform preparation. This study was conducted to determine current collaborative efforts of practicing school counselors and school psychologists in 1 southeastern state. Implications for educators and 1 training model that distinctly accentuates collaboration are presented.     

Supervision Training for Professional Counselors: An Exploratory Study

Enhanced interest in supervision training has corresponded with recognition of supervision as a profession in its own right. For many practicing professional counselors, supervision training has traditionally been unavailable. The present research used the Clinical Supervision Questionnaire to evaluate the effect of a supervision training program on the supervision scores of 16 practicing professional counselors who participated in a supervision training program. Participants completed a pretraining and posttraining questionnaire. The findings revealed a significant difference between the pre‐ and posttraining results for the experimental group. This difference was maintained over a 6‐month period. Practical and research implications are discussed.     

Continuing Education for School Counselors

Recently, changes have occurred in American society and in the focus of education. Women's liberation, career education, and single-parent families are three important examples. Each example presents the counselor with expectations and problems that were not present in earlier times. Counselors who received their training 20, 10, 5, and even 3 years ago are probably not meeting present challenges as effectively as they might. Counselors need to learn new skills to meet changing conditions or run the risk of becoming ineffective or irrelevant. One model for the continuing education of counselors was described by Pulvino and Perrone (1973). This article reports on seven years of experience with that model at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

School Counselors in International School: Critical Issues and Challenges

This study sought to examine the views of school counselors in international school settings; international schools being those that enroll students from varying nationalities (both English speaking and non-English speaking countries) and follow an American/International college preparatory education curriculum. Results were pursued in regard to three important areas: (1) mental health needs of students (e.g., coping with cultural transitions, aggression, self-esteem), (2) their own professional development needs (e.g., multicultural development, networking), and (3) their interactions with teachers, administrators, and parents (e.g., lack of knowledge of the counselor’s role, lack of trust in the counselor, lack of teamwork). Implications for supporting international school counselors are provided. An earlier version of this article was presented at the International Counseling Psychology Conference, Chicago, Illinois (2008).     

A Case Presentation Approach to Group Supervision for Community College Counselors

A case presentation method of group supervision, as practiced at a community college, is described. Developmental principles underlying this approach are presented.
