There is evidence for the use of pigments and dyes from the dawn of civilization. Until the middle of the last century the latter were virtually all of vegetable or animal origin, but then they were almost totally eclipsed by synthetic products. Now, as some synthetic dyes are suspected of having undesirable side effects, the food industry is again turning its attention to some of the natural dyestuffs that were used in the past.

Granulation has been used since ancient times to produce metal grains, usually of gold and its alloys, which have served in the fabrication of jewellery. In this review the historical development of granulation and its technical characteristics are discussed. The author argues that earlier interpretations have been based on several false assumptions.     

Effect of ethanol on liver antioxidant defense systems: Adose dependent study

Alcohol induced oxidative stress is linked to the metabolism of ethanol. In this study it has been observed that administration of ethanol in lower concentration caused gain in body and liver weight. while higher concentration of ethanol caused lesser gain in body and liver weight. Ethanol treatment enhanced lipid peroxidation significantly, depletion in levels of hepatic glutathione and ascorbate, accompanied by a decline in the activities of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase, and increased in hepatic glutathione s-transferase activity. Interestingly catalase activity increases in lower concentration of ethanol exposure, and decreased in higher concentration. Superoxide dismutase activity was also increased on ethanol exposure. But, ethanol feeding did not show any effect on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity. Ethanol ingestion perturbs the antioxidant system in a dose and time dependent manner.

Building beauty: physiognomy on the gas-lit stage

From 1816 onwards, London theatres began to install gas-lighting systems to replace candles. In addition to allowing theatre managers to adjust the level of illumination, gas lights offered greater brightness and visibility for the audience. Actors had to adjust to this new level of exposure that threatened their ability to "look the part." Until this illuminating moment, there had been little need for makeup and actors to adhere to the principles of physiognomy--a system that correlated character traits to facial features. Under the new harsh glare of the gas lights, both the faces of the actors and the theatres themselves were found wanting.

Building on quicksand: the foundations of the Eastern Scheldt barrier

The long and successful experience of the Dutch in recovering land from the sea and protecting it from inundation needs no emphasis. Even their ingenuity in civil engineering has been challenged, however, in the design and construction of a storm-surge barrier across the Eastern Scheldt, for it has virtually to be built on quicksand. This article describes the way in which the problem has been solved by laying huge prefabricated filter mattresses on the seabed to provide a secure foundation against the assaults of the highest tides.
