Phone Dinner

One day, when I was at an airport waiting for my flight, I had to make a phone call. I looked around and found all the phones were busy. So I went to wait in line and stood there for a long time.The person talking on the phone was an old man and I could hear the conversation clearly. He was talking about his trip in this city. He said he was having a good time. He commented on(评论) the weather here and asked about the weather back there. While he was talking, he was eating a sandwich and drinking coffee.

We crossed the river and arrived at the station, where I bought tickets while he busied himself seeing to my luggage. There being quite a bit of luggage, we have to pay the porters some money, only after that could we pass. Then he was also busy haggling with the porters over the price. How smarty I was in those days that I frowned upon the way father was bargaining. I was about to cut in a few words when he finally finished wrangling and agreed on the price.     

On Being a Minolity Of One

When I first went to China to teach English I was at a rural school in the south. The closest city was Conghua, with about eighty-five thousand people. I liked to go there on my one day off each week to buy fruit and other things to have in my dorm at the school. Sometimes, I would go with one of the other foreign teachers but many times I would go alone and I would be the only westerner in the city, a minority of one.

Life Changes on the Day

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. As I was walking, 1 saw some kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
