The question underpinning this paper, and the international symposium on reading assessment at the University of Nottingham which preceded it, is this: “In what ways can we learn from each other how to improve reading assessment, at the personal, classroom, local and national levels?” This paper will attempt to answer the question “How can we learn from each other?” in the following ways: first some background information on the New Paradigms in Reading Assessment (NPRA) seminar will be presented; second, an account will be offered about what has been happening in language arts assessment (the subject termed ‘English’) in the United Kingdom, which goes some way to explaining why in England there has been a particularly urgent need to learn from the experiences of other countries; third, some examples will be given of new approaches to assessment in other countries, particularly the United States, Australia, and Scotland (which has the same government, but a different education system from that in England and Wales) from which those of us in England might learn; fourth, some principles which might underpin new assessment approaches within the English system will be put forward; and finally, an indication will be given of how some of these principles are being put into practice in classrooms in England, as pilot work on an international collaborative study.  相似文献

An information society is one in which information is churned out at an increasingly rapid rate. It is also a society in which change becomes the norm. Information learned one day may become obsolete the next day. How, then, do we, as educators, deal with this situation? What can we do to help our students keep afloat and learn to swim in this rising sea of information? In this paper, metaphors are explored as possible lifebelts in the situation. The characteristics of metaphors are outlined and factors affecting their pedagogic value are discussed. Metaphorical teaching is not new. Indeed, it has a very long history in many cultures. Examples are given of how metaphors have been used in teaching in the past and present as well as suggestions of how they may be used in the future. Such suggestions, however, are only helpful in provoking thought. What we really need is research to determine under what conditions the use of metaphors in teaching are most effective. In this respect some questions that need to be answered are mentioned.  相似文献

In this study, we collected and analyzed data to examine the extent to which the achievement gap between urban and suburban children extended to their knowledge of digital literacies. Findings indicated that the suburban children outperformed the urban students in each of the performance areas, and that suburban children reported greater opportunity to learn new literacies in school than the urban children. This study provides further evidence regarding the achievement gap between children in urban and suburban schools and suggests that our schools suffer from a lack of social justice in providing the education that all children need to become 21st-century learners.  相似文献
