Hurry Up,Please. It's Time—State of Emergency

This article explores the ethics of preservation, both as they have been traditionally established and as they might apply to current and future digital preservation efforts. The first part of the article reviews the literature of the past two decades to see how the preservation community has defined the ethical dimensions of its work, as well as developed guidelines to support an ethical practice. The second part considers digital preservation and the ways it both extends and complicates established ethical tenets. Digital preservation challenges the library community to revisit fundamental preservation practices and responsibilities. Our ability to come to consensus on these issues will be critical for the public's continued trust in our roles as stewards of the cultural record.

Planning,Organizing, and Hosting a Workshop—It's All in the Details

A library training workshop is an effective way to teach and expand staff skills and, in the process, create interest in new library-related procedures. Hosting a workshop presents an opportunity to cultivate shared knowledge internally, and inviting outside participation provides a forum for strengthening external relationships and exchanging ideas. This article offers a detailed look at organizing a workshop—from budgeting and selecting a trainer to registering participants and making local arrangements. Additionally, it offers practical guidance for successfully planning and organizing a training workshop that will be a rewarding experience for participants, trainer, and host.     

“Communication,” “Critical”

Despite the proliferation of critical studies of communication, the meanings of the words “communication” and “critical” remain deeply contested. Attending to the history of the use of these terms inside and outside of the academy offers a broader perspective on some of the most pressing issues confronting scholars of communication today.     

What Cultural,Critical and Communication Might Mean—And Why Cultural Studies Is a Bit Like Rave Culture

Responding to the editor's request for reflections on the key terms in the title of this journal, this somewhat autobiographical and possibly self-indulgent piece reflects on their changing meanings and on the ways in which cultural studies has changed and declined since the early 1990s. Cultural studies, the piece asserts, is a bit like rave culture, because like that subcultural formation of music and dance, it was big and quite innovative in the 1990s, but lost its edge in the twenty first century – although interesting offshoots continue beyond the places where it ‘originated’. The piece also suggests some reasons for the decline of cultural studies. More importantly, it tries to understand the term ‘critical’ via politics. It expresses some preferences, in terms of what constitutes good critical writing, and outlines some key elements of good critical analysis of culture.
