Employability Skills,The Student Path,and The Role of The Academic Library and Partners

This case study explores the introduction of a university wide employability program by the World of Work Careers Centre (WOWCC) at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). The article reports the background against which an employability program was implemented; the justification and growing demand for more emphasis on employability skills in graduates; references the changes in academic libraries and services delivered; and, how these changed enabled WOWCC to work in consultation with the libraries to ensure a seamless and successful mode of delivery.

The discussion includes the origins of the scientific journal, the problems and promise of the contemporary journal and an exploration of developing technologies, such as electronic bibliographic data retrieval, personalized information systems, electronic mail, text editing, teleconferencing, electronic publishing, telefacsimile, optical and laser disc storage with an emphasis on their effect upon scholarly communication in the future.

The objectives of this presentation are to: outline important developments influencing the publication of scholarly journals, describe several electronic scholarly communication models now in development, summarize the goals and current status of Project Muse at Johns Hopkins, and share some preliminary findings and observations drawn from this experiment in scholarly publishing.

Abstract

Actively seeking connections between real life and information retrieval concepts will not only keep students' interest but will also improve their ability to recall key principles when faced with the next research assignment. This article defines analogies and highlights their role as a practical bibliographic instructional strategy. It further presents the use of analogies in the larger context of instructional design, followed by survey results consisting of actual analogies currently used in libraries across the United States and Canada.     

Jingoism,Public Opinion,And The New Imperialism

This essay analyses late-Victorian understandings of the relationship between the press, imperial diplomacy, and popular enthusiasm for empire, and examines how newspapers explained their own role in the imperial rivalries of the 1890s. During imperial disputes between Britain and France (particularly the Fashoda crisis) and between Britain and the USA (the Venezuela boundary dispute) contemporaries claimed that self-interested ‘jingo’ elements of the political elite had sought to foment conflict by manipulating ‘public opinion’, but had been defeated by statesmen (who had used the press for legitimate diplomatic purposes) and by ‘the people’ (who were averse to war). This contrasted with contemporary comments about the role played by the press in provoking wars between the USA and Spain and between Britain and the Transvaal: both the press and the people seemed to succumb to an irrational popular ‘jingoism’, and to sweep statesmen along in their wake. However, this essay argues that these contemporary verdicts about the role of newspapers in focusing popular imperialism have been too easily accepted by historians. During the imperial rivalries of the 1890s the press played an important role as a medium of transnational communication, but did not push statesmen into expansionism.
