At a time of endemic xenophobia some artists have attempted to resist this trend by depicting its damaging consequences, revealing the inequalities that fuel its disfigurement of human relations and result in mass human displacement. Paul Dash's recent paintings of refugees attempting dangerous and degrading sea crossings are the main subject of this article, and these works are discussed in the context of his negative educational experiences as a child, and his salvation through painting in the sanctuary of his school's art room. This school experience and the trajectory of his artistic career are contextualised by the current marginalisation of the arts in the curriculum and the increasing scarcity of critical and creative approaches to education.  相似文献

Strange gods     
ABSTRACT

The current study focused on examining the relationships of positive social attitudes with aspects of well-functioning. Universal-diverse orientation(UDO), a social attitude characterized by awareness and acceptance of both the similarities and differences among people, was measured with the Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity Scale, Short Form (MGUDS-S; Miville et al., 1999; Fuertes et al., 2000). The MGUDS-S contains three subscales: Diversity of Contact, Relativistic Appreciation, and Comfort with Differences. The MGUDS-S was administered with measures of well-functioning. In the first condition, 183 undergraduates completed the MGUDS-S and scales measuring coping skills, positive thinking, self-efficacy, and optimism. In the second condition, 107 undergraduates completed the MGUDS-S and scales measuring social connectedness, personal self-esteem, and collective self-esteem. Multivariate multiple regression analyses revealed the MGUDS-S subscales were significantly predicted by social self-efficacy, general selfefficacy, problem-focused coping, collective self-esteem, and gender. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.  相似文献

This paper examines the developing beliefs about classroom motivation of eight preservice teachers during teacher education. The framework conceptualises the contexts in which preservice teachers participate and the filtering effect of prior beliefs. Qualitative analyses of multiple data sources reveal two distinct trajectories in the development of beliefs about classroom motivation. The findings highlight the importance of filtering prior beliefs, alignment and conflict of ideas, significance of self-motivating factors and power of emotions in developing beliefs about classroom motivation. Implications emphasize the importance of enabling preservice teachers examining existing beliefs and integrating these with learning during teacher education.  相似文献
