Pageant of the Tsars: The Romanov Coronation Albums

This essay and checklist document the exhibition Pageant of the Tsars: The Romanov Coronation Albums, held at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens February 16–June 8, 2013. The exhibition focused on the history of the Romanovs through the lens of the coronation albums of the tsars. Based on the collection of five of the seven coronation albums held in the Hillwood library, the exhibition was supplemented with objects from the museum and library collections, loans from other institutions, and electronic versions of the albums available on iPads in the exhibition and via the iBooks store. The show marked the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Romanov dynasty in 1613.

Demonstrations in Visual Frames: Syntagmatic Analysis of Online Photo Albums of Two Egyptian Revolutions

Photos of demonstrations in Egypt have been overwhelmingly used in online news since the revolution of January 25, 2011. This article explores the visual aspects of demonstration photo albums during the political conflicts in Egypt that led to two Egyptian revolutions.¹¹ This article adopts the term “revolution” because the new Egyptian Constitution issued in 2014 described events of January 25, 2011, and June 30, 2013, as revolutions.View all notes It scrutinizes the different types of photo albums, considers the differences and similarities between photo album frames and still photograph frames, and implements syntagmatic analysis of demonstration albums. The article concludes that visual framing occurs through nonchronological and sequential syntagmas.

照相底片背涂层极易滋生霉菌,严重影响底片记载影像的完整性与清晰度.运用次氯酸钠溶液去除霉变底片背涂层霉斑,采用激光共聚焦显微镜和分光光度计对霉变背涂层去除前后的底片表面形貌、粗糙度和反射率进行表征分析表明,该方法可有效去除底片背涂层因霉菌繁殖形成的粗糙界面,消除霉变底片粗糙界面对光的反射导致洗印照片产生的白斑,且不会对底片的机械强度和耐久性产生影响.该方法可有效恢复底片记载影像信息的清晰度与完整性,同时消除霉菌对底片的长期危害.     

Curating and Controlling Zuni Photographic Images

This article explores the history of photography in Zuni and provides a context for the forthcoming request from Zuni religious leaders that they be allowed to exercise some control over sensitive images held by museums. This request is part of the debate over whether Native Americans should exercise some degree of control over historic photographs of their religious ceremonies. Some Zuni community members always considered photography of religious ceremonies to be inappropriate. How it happened sheds light on how Zunis incorporated the then-new technology into their traditional beliefs and social organization. Similarly, existing museum policy toward sensitive images is a result of the way photography has been incorporated into European and American legal and ethical thinking. In addition to lending weight to the contention that forthcoming requests from Native Americans are based on long-held beliefs rather than simply contemporary political expediency, history also suggests the parameters for an equitable solution to this issue.

Infrared Ellipsometry Analysis of Heritage Photographic Prints

Focusing on the photographic archive of Julian Carrillo (Mexico), we study and characterize the photographic processes of a set of 13 photographs dated between 1884 and 1925. By using infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry, we classified a selected set of photographs according to its kind of binder. Thus, we recognized for each photograph, the presence of proteins, and therefore, the particular photographic process. Furthermore, we have identified the presence of baryta layer, the use of plasticizer, and the eventual coating utilized to protect the photograph, whose composition was based in natural organic components, mainly shellac, beeswax, or camphor.

A Case Study of the Photographic Principle

Using The Philadelphia Inquirer as a case study, this article examines the visual behaviors of news professionals as they pertain to the importance and function of the social construction of news photos. The author posits the concept of the photographic principle to explain the process by which news professionals maintain photographic integrity—especially given the latest technology and its potential for misuse in constructing news photos. The photographic principle is defined as the guiding standard photo editors use to preserve the inherent value of news photographs. As the article shows, photo editors at the Inquirer provided the model on which the author based the concept of the photographic principle—a positive example of news workers who strive to protect the veracity of news photos.

随着照片档案的大量出现,如何最大限度地延长照片档案寿命的问题已成为广大档案工作者应该认真研究和解决的问题.     

照片类电子档案元数据真实性研究

电子档案元数据是保障电子档案真实、可靠、完整、可用的手段之一,确保电子档案元数据自身的真实性是证明电子档案真实的前提。照片类电子档案部分元数据的取值源于电子照片可交换图像文件格式（EXIF）,但EXIF中的信息是容易被修改的。为此,本文采用电子照片来源检测技术对编号为M43（捕获设备）的子元数据M44（设备制造商）和M45（设备型号）的真实性进行检测,利用电子照片自身信息的关联性对编号为M54（图像参数）的子元数据M57（图像高度）和M58（图像宽度）的真实性进行检测,以此引起学界对电子档案元数据真实性研究的关注,以期为电子档案来源可靠问题的解决提供新的思路和方法。     

家庭数码照片档案管理的思考与实践

与其他电子文件形成过程需经历一个"时间段"不同的是,数码照片的形成具有"时间点"特性,这使得它拥有"相片拍照日期"这一核心元数据.笔者认为,家庭数码照片档案管理应依赖该核心元数据实现对数码照片档案真实性的"维持".而"维持"不是技术问题,只是意识问题.
