As the next millennium approaches, libraries must change and evolve in the very near future in order to survive. Reference services can no longer stay behind a desk or wihtin a building's walls. Instead, reference librarians must examine their clientele, determine their unique information needs, and develop and market appropriate collections and services. The changing instructional paradigm in America's classrooms provides an opportunity for reference librarians to modify and expand their efforts to encourage information use and literacy for education faculty, student teachers, classroom teachers and administrators. This paper briefly discusses present day information seeking and library use by educators and then suggests new overtures to this library patron community. 相似文献

This paper explores the topic of electronic books (e-books) and the effect that these digital devices and other new technologies
has on the publishing industry. Contemporary society often claims that the publishing industry is dying and that the innovation
of the e-book will eventually sentence the printed book to death. But this study will show that such is not the case. While
it is true that the world is undergoing a digital revolution, publishers today have not been left in the dust, because these
firms have embraced electronic publishing (e-publishing). The invention of e-books opens a world of opportunities and since
the e-book market is still in its growth stage, there is much work left to be done. As with any new venture, the industry
faces certain challenges, such as piracy, but with tools like encryption, digital asset management (DAM), digital rights management
(DRM), and digital object identifiers (DOI), publishers are well on the way to a solution. While it is safe to say that the
digital revolution has forever changed the face of publishing, e-books could actually revitalize the industry. No one knows
what the future of e-publishing will hold, but developments affect publishing houses, authors, and consumers alike. And while
the ultimate fate of the printed book is yet unknown, for now, it is here to stay. 相似文献

Programs for geospatial support at academic libraries have evolved over the past decade in response to changing campus needs and developing technologies. Geospatial applications have matured tremendously in this time, emerging from specialty tools to become broadly used across numerous disciplines. At many universities, the library has served as a central resource allowing students and faculty across academic departments access to GIS resources. Today, as many academic libraries evaluate their spaces and services, GIS and data services are central in discussions on how to further engage with patrons and meet increasingly diverse researcher needs. As library programs evolve to support increasingly technical data and GIS needs, many universities are faced with similar challenges and opportunities. To explore these themes, data and GIS services librarians and GIS specialists from five universities—the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Texas A&M, New York University, North Carolina State University, and California Polytechnic State University—with different models of library geospatial and data support, describe their programs to help identify common services, as well as unique challenges, opportunities, and future plans. 相似文献

Since the first dental school was founded nearly 130 years ago, dental education has followed an expanding but relatively unchanging pattern. During the last decade the many social changes taking place in our society have been influencing the profession in such a way that dental education and dental practice must necessarily adjust to satisfy the increasing demands for dental care. The profession is studying ways in which these adjustments can be made most efficiently. It is quite possible that the procedures of dental training and dental practice will change significantly in the future. 相似文献

The sheer power and scope of Internet information services are o~eninet:h e oublic's eve to the volume of information available in akay &at tr&ional 6brary service points have never quite managed Are librarians missing the point in how information options are presented to the public? Do we need to shift ow emphasis on the importance of specific skills and abilities required by front line librarians? Or, do we need to emphatically emphasize service as a primary mission in library services? In addition to basic core competencies, today's reference librarian must be committed to providing superior public service to library clientele and that commitment must be immediately apparent to each user. 相似文献

Abstract Analyzes the new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California in terms of the experience in developing new ideas and confronting new problems in reference service. Argues that developing a merged public-university reference service encounters important problems that are similar to the challenges that face reference services everywhere in the 21st century. Introduces the problem of how a merged public-academic reference service must develop a new reference culture in order to succeed. Links the development of the reference culture to the ideas of Life Long Learning and Information Literacy. 相似文献
