Top local anchors (50.4%) were surveyed about community appearances. They personally schedule and make appearances regularly and see them as beneficial to causes, ratings, and their careers and communities; they paradoxically realize appearances take time from producing a quality broadcast. Results illustrate Bantz's (1985) theory of normalization of conflicts among journalistic, business, and entertainment norms; respondents agreed across most demographics, but exceptions support Berkowitz's (1993) scholarship on news-worker socialization. Most reported making appearances that are covered as news. Younger and small-market anchors were more likely to link public appearances to ratings; older anchors were more likely to equate appearances with community service.  相似文献

Based on an explorative case study in the Netherlands, the authors developed a methodology to assess the welfare effects of public service broadcasting. This methodology consists of a combination of revealed and stated preferences, using readily available data for all programs broadcast in the evening in 2011. The results cover both individual programs and an aggregate level. Because the data used encompass both public and commercial programs, the analysis allows for comparisons between these.  相似文献

The issue of how to preserve and promote cultural diversity in Mexico has not been central in policy debates and regulations. However, scholars, politicians, and public officials increasingly are debating how to promote and maintain cultural diversity here. This article reviews the current Mexican debate on policies related to the promotion of cultural diversity through television, using the concepts of source, content, and exposure diversity. The article argues that current commercial strategies in Mexico do not stimulate cultural diversity in media content. Instead, it advocates a mixed system of media with different mandates and modes of financing.  相似文献

In this case study we examine willingness to pay (WTP) for PBS using an open-ended, single-question contingent valuation method. Using data collected from 128 mail and 101 telephone surveys, we develop illustrative findings with respect to 'look-alike' cable television on WTP for PBS. Inverse demand equations were estimated. Statistically significant effects were found in models estimated with both biased and adjusted data using ordinary least squares, restricted least squares, and Tobit censored regression methods.  相似文献

In the United States, public television claims itself a champion of localism. A prime-time schedule analysis of the Public Broadcasting Service's (PBS) member stations establishes localism scores, and discriminant analysis finds variables that predict differences among stations. Market level variables (income, education, ethnic diversity, geographic component) and organizational level variables (Community Service Grants, membership funding, overall revenue) affect localization of member stations' schedules. This is the first empirical study utilizing a structural operationalization of localism, inclusive of all programming genres, applied to PBS member stations.  相似文献

The hypothesis that public library circulation of individual titles would be significantly greater when publicized via CATV than when not so publicized was tested by an experiment in which older public library titles were publicized using low-intensity cablecast advertisements. Circulation of the advertised titles was not significantly altered when compared with either previous rates of circulation or control titles. In this article, we examine content supply as a public service strategy in Finland, one of the forerunner countries of digital terrestrial television in Europe. Regarding digitalization, European broadcasters face several options from full service to a specialized mission. The case at hand is the first full digital year of 2002 in Finland. The focus is on one of the traditional principles of public service broadcasting, the diversity of programming, as it is realized in the new, digital, multichannel environment. We examine content diversity by comparing channel profiles as well by analyzing indexes of the horizontal and vertical breadth and dissimilarity of programming. In a market of two public service and two commercial analogue generalist TV channels, the five new thematic digital channels have radically altered the amount of system-wide supply, but the diversity of programming has not suffered. This is due to the specializing strategy of the public service broadcaster. Its approach to focus on factual programming is clear in its digital output but can be detected in moderation also in its analogue supply. However, with the expected increase on commercial digital supply also in terrestrial networks, there is the possibility of the generalist public service broadcaster to turn into a fragmented one.  相似文献

This content analysis of 251 Dutch and American, public and private, television newscasts draws on empirical research to measure whether elements of visuals, identified in other studies as aiding in recall, are used in news about violence. A literature review on the contributions of visuals to television news learning pointed to a paradox: although getting attention is necessary for comprehension, over-emphasizing attention attributes may impede comprehension. This study concludes that although visuals from public broadcasters contain more elements identified as increasing the comprehensibility of a news item, visuals primarily have attention- gaining attributes, regardless of country or broadcast system.  相似文献
