联合国出版物排架体系研究

联合国是全球最大的政府间国际组织,每年出版发行大量文献资料,其文献具有质量高、权威性强等特点,极具使用价值.国家图书馆作为国内最大的联合国资料托存图书馆,针对该类文献特征,综合现有排架方式,对图书、期刊、文件等不同形式及纸本、光盘等不同载体都作出具体规定,摸索出一套相对完善的索书号分配方式和排架方法.

Adlai E. Stevenson's United Nations audience

As United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Stevenson, with the assistance of his staff, analyzed and prepared to address three widely varied audiences: the primary audience, his fellow diplomats; his secondary audience, representatives of the world press and the radio and television media; and a spontaneous and ever‐changing group of daily visitors. To influence these audiences and to seek the widest level of support and the least antagonism for American policies, Stevenson had to concern himself with their functions, attitudes, and loyalties.

A statistical analysis of the construction of the United Nations E-Government Development Index

There is much debate among scholars about what constitutes e-government success, what method is best for measuring it, and which variables best describe it. This lack of consensus naturally leads to disagreement about the best approach for ranking the e-government programs of different countries. This article evaluates the current standard in e-government ranking, the United Nations E-government Development Index, by performing a confirmatory factor analysis on the raw data reported in the “Data tables” section of the “Statistical annex” in the 2010 United Nations E-Government Survey. The results identify several technical issues with the index and point to the need for a statistical tool that can be used to evaluate and guide the development of e-government ranking systems. The article recommends that researchers develop a new paradigm for quantitative e-government ranking that uses factor analysis to aid in the selection of variables, the organization of aggregate constructs, and the determination of weights.

An Analysis of United Nations Serial Publishing Patterns and Practices

The following paper examines current United Nations (UN) serial publishing practices. Using the series listed in the "Current Serials' list in the 1985 cumulated UNDOC: Current Index as the sample population, this study discusses UN serials in terns of their: (a) physical and intellectual formats, @) place of publication, c) frequency of publication, (d) survivability, indexing, and availability. The study concludes that UN serials follow a definite pattern of publication, despite apparent variability found in the UNDOC "Current Serials" list. The need for better bibliographic control for UN serials is also discussed.

The Citation of United Nations Information Resources in International Relations Literature

ABSTRACT

This study examines 17,138 citations in 358 journal articles published in the United States in the field of international relations (IR). The United Nations accounts for 282 (32.2%) of the 877 references to information resources of intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), and its publications were cited more than twice as often as those of both the European Union (EU) or World Bank. This dominance is only partly based on the UN's importance as an object of research: though only 15 (4.2%) of the selected articles deal extensively with the United Nations, its publications were cited in 79 (22.1%). The EU, by comparison, is the subject of 37 articles, but its publications were cited in only 36 (10.1%). This demonstrates the relevance of UN information resources to a broad range of topics in IR.     

Cohort Trends in Media Use in the United States

In this study, I replicate recent research conducted in Germany (Peiser, 1996) on differential effects of television on birth cohorts' media use in the first 2 decades after the diffusion of television. Cohort analyses of television viewing, attitude toward television, and newspaper reading were conducted using secondary data from the corresponding decades in the United States. Unlike in Germany, the American television generation apparently developed a closer relation with television than the preceding cohorts. As in Germany, newspaper reading was lower among the younger cohorts. The study's results point to a displacement process in the United States, and they suggest that the effects of growing up with television may depend on a country's television system.
