我们在Lesson28中学习了love—词,love意为“爱、喜爱”。但是,同学们在网球比赛中还会听到有时裁判大喊love all。难道他是让赛手去“爱所有的人”吗?不是。其实,此时love表“零分”之意。love all即“零比零”之意。那么,love怎么能成为零分呢?     

爱是什么?

What is love? The eternal question we all carry around deep within our hearts. Love is the eternal search. Love is eternal when we find it. But do we really ever find it? When we define it do we negate it? When we set limits on what we believe to be love do we begin to destroy it by hoping to understand or own it for ourselves? We offer it through all of our relationships we vary our giving, often by what we hope to receive in return. But is this really love?

Emily Dickinson and Her Works

“零分”(zero)与“爱”(love)

喜欢体育的读者都知道,在观看英美国家的球赛时,当比赛的一方或双方出现零分时,裁判员常说love。为什么得零分用love表示呢?英语中很多单词都是从法语演变而来,其中“零蛋”法语叫loeuf,其发音与英语单词love相似。由于loeuf拼写不便,英国人直接用love来代表loeuf,而且love中也有类似“零蛋”一样的字母“O”,所以love除了表示“爱、爱情”之外,便多了一个“零分”、“零蛋”之意。用love表示zero的好处是:一方面比较委婉,比直接说零分文雅,另一方面zero发音别扭,不顺口。所以与“爱”无关的单词love就开始使用,专指比赛尤其是网球赛的“零…     

为什么网球赛中的零分称为Love

这个网球术语对参赛者来说不太招人爱。然而,没关系,这个字眼的起源与爱情毫无关系。Love事实上是法语“oeuf”的曲解,“oeuf”的原意是指蛋,比如鹅蛋。Love表示零分,肯定要比鹅蛋更委婉一些。This tennis term is not very lovely for the players.
