Semantic and Pragmatic Approaches to Presupposition

Presupposition is widely studied in the field of linguistics nowadays while it was firstly put forward in philosophy.Early study ex amined it from semantic approach,which treated it as the relation between two propositions.In 1970s,it was found presupposition was also a pragmatic concept,which held that presupposition varied with context.The author holds that semantic approach can’t solve all the com plex problems while it’s the basic part about the issue.Only through the pragmatic approach can we study it dynamically.

Cooperative Principle Violation in Moment in Peking

In people’s daily communication,people use many techniques to polish their utterances. So the conversation becomes more complicated. But utterances in people’s communication play a very important role in people’s life. And this thesis is going to analyze the strategies of successful conversations through the analysis of Yao Mulan’s utterances in Moment in Peking under Grice’s Cooperative Principle.Lin Yutang likes Yao Mulan mostly in all the characters in Moment in Peking. With the skillful strategies in Yao Mulan’s utterances,we can see her good characteristics. That’s the excellent communication strategies that make Yao Mulan the most charming character in the novel. Many scholars do the research of the novel and the heroine Yao Mulan. But most of the scholars study these topics from the perspective of translation,philosophy and so forth. They are rarely from the perspective of pragmatics. This thesis analyzes Yao Mulan’s charming characteristics from the perspective of Quantity maxim of Cooperative Principle.From the analysis of Yao Mulan’s talent in conversation,readers can see her charming characteristics.What’s more,people can learn some successful communication strategies. Grasping one skillful conversation strategy is important to people in their life,work and study.     

Daisy,A Victim of Prejudice in Intercultural Communication——An Analysis of Daisy's Tragic Destiny in Henry James' Daisy Miller

Daisy Miller,among Henry James’masterpieces,is the novella which won him international fame.As some critics have analyzed,Daisy is a victim of the values of the Old World.In the author’s opinion,Daisy’s tragedy should be partly attributed to prejudice,which impedes the international communication between the newly wealthy Americans and the Europeanized Americans.In this sense,this paper focuses on an analysis of three forms of prejudice in Daisy Miller and tries to interpret Daisy’s tragic destiny from the perspective of intercultural communication.     

Investigating Overseas Students’ Use of Communication Strategy And the Value for English Acquisition

The use of communication strategies helps these students achieve successful communication.The present study is conducted to investigate Chinese overseas students’ use of communication strategy and the value for English acquisition.It found what strategies students usually use and find effective and how students use these strategies in order to overcome obstacles in communication.In addition,it investigated students’ consciousness of using strategies and to some extent the questionnaires helped some of the students start thinking about using strategies consciously.

This paper aims to explain the restraint exerted by the deep structure of culture,such as history,religion,social convention and family,in understanding and appreciating foreign verbal humor,especially foreign statesman’s verbal humor;whereby the significance of the deep structure of culture is revealed.In this paper,Herbert Paul Grice’s Conversational Implicature Theory,i.e.the violation of cooperative principle,is taken as the theoretic base;the deep structure of culture is the analytical background and some of Obama’s remarks and speeches given informal occasions are taken as analyzed examples,from which the essential role of the deep structure of culture is emphasized and focused in cross-cultural communication.     

Literature Review of Effects of Organisational Culture on Foreign-Educated Returnees at Universities in Yunnan

I propose to research on the topic of how organisational culture impacts upon cultural adaptation of foreign-educated returnees at universities in Yunnan and how to manage communication in the process of cultural adaptation and reintegration.In the literature review section,I review the major literature surrounding the role the foreign-trained returnees have played in China’s higher education.I also discuss the tensions between new returnees,senior returnees,locally trained young and senior scholars,and management in the organisational contexts of Chinese higher education.     

An Analysis of Pragmatic Failure in Intercultural Communication

With the globalization of the world economy,intercultural communication is becoming more and more important.In China,more and more people learn English,Even though they have little difficulty in understanding the literal meaning of utterances when confronted with authentic communication situations,they may not interpret the utterances correctly,or express themselves appropriately.The problem of pragmatic failure has been holding an important position in the study of intercultural communication.In this paper I will mainly analyze the phenomena of pragmatic failure in senior middle school students’daily conversations in intercultural communication,and discuss the nature and causes of pragmatic failure in intercultural communication situations.After we gain a better understanding of the phenomena,recommendations will be made on how to avoid pragmatic failure,and to increase intercultural communicative competence in English.

Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club describes the complex relation between four Chinese immigrant mothers and their daughters who are raised in America.It reveals different cultural connotation between China and America.Misunderstand ing,conflicts,communication and then understanding reflects the process of clash,communication and blending between East and West.In this novel,mother is the medium of national history and memory,the carrier of Chinese culture and the bridge of past and present.On the contrary,daughters are raised in America.They are influenced by American culture.Cultural difference is the main cause of their conflicts.     

An Analysis of Student Anxiety in English Listening

Listening has been playing a key role in daily communication and ELT.However,it’s an obstacle for most non-English majors.Among affective factors the students encounter in listening,anxiety is the most usual one.In this paper,I will analyze the situation based on my observations on listening class and interviews with some students in terms of the relationship between students’ anxiety and their listening performance and the characteristics of the listening materials.Subsequently,with the interviews with some students,some possible ways of improving listening ability are discussed.

Improving Writing Skills of Thai EFL Students by Recognition of and Compensation for Factors of L 1 to L2 Negative Transfer

In this study, we examined the likelihood of a TAME （extended technology acceptance model）, in which the interrelationships among computer self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, intention to use and self-reported use of computer-mediated technology were tested. In addition, the gender- and age-invariant of its causal structure were evaluated. The data were collected from a self-reported questionnaire administered to 477 administrative staff of a public university in Malaysia. The results of structural equation modeling supported the adequacy of TAME. Although the TAME＇s causal structure was applicable to both male and female staff, age group appeared to moderate the structural relationships among the constructs of interest.     

Culture Conflict and Resolution in English Teaching

With the appearance of globalization,communication across cultures plays an important role in English learning.However,in the traditional English teaching of China,we have mainly focused on teaching grammar and language skills.In this paper,the author employs collaborative learning model with the author’s teaching practice to illustrate the conflict resolution and the importance of cultures from a dialogue of team work in the process of teaching.And in order to educate the consciousness of students in communication across cultures,the author puts forward some suggestions.
