Lecture capture, defined here as the capturing of some or all elements of a live lecture in digital format, is becoming increasingly popular in higher education. Despite this increase in popularity, fewer than 10% of institutes of higher education globally have adopted comprehensive lecture capture systems. So, the majority of instructors wanting to use lecture capture technology will find themselves having to acquire their own technology and do the capture themselves. There are several factors that influence the use of lecture capture, including the instructor’s level of comfort with technology, their budget, and the context in which they will be using the tool. Using case studies of our own experiences, we hope to illustrate a variety of ways in which lecture capture can be appropriately used in higher education in this way. Following this, we outline several challenges that we faced and provide recommendations for how to overcome these. Lastly, we describe some issues that should be considered and addressed before getting started using lecture capture technology in a way that is customized to suit the needs of both professor and student. We hope that by following the guidelines outlined in this paper, and by seeing practical examples of how lecture capture can be used in a variety of contexts, the transition from idea to implementation will be an easier one.  相似文献

Feedback is an effective instructional practice for improving achievement. The importance of feedback has been understood by teachers for many years, yet recent research has elevated its status. One characteristic of effective feedback is personalized comments, which assist students in understanding their performance. Most research analyzes the effects of written feedback. Some current studies have examined the effects of alternative delivery methods, such as audio. One new approach for creating and delivering feedback is through screen capture technology. A case study was conducted to examine the effects of this method on the academic performance of 36 undergraduate students in a teacher education course. Results showed that screen capture feedback is effective for guiding corrections on a writing assignment. Students also reported that feedback was useful for knowing what they were doing right or wrong and that they would prefer more feedback of this type.  相似文献

Schools struggle to accurately assess nonnative speakers of English using accountability systems that somehow do not capture the complexity of the issues at hand. This article discusses topics surrounding the assessment of English language learners and how these issues have been oversimplified by such processes as the No Child Left Behind legislation. The case is made that English language learning is a complex system, holistic, nonlinear, and constantly evolving; however, current assessment practices do not address this complexity.  相似文献

This study describes the possible variations of thought experiments in terms of their nature, purpose, and reasoning resources adopted during the solution of conceptual physics problems. A phenomenographic research approach was adopted for this study. Three groups of participants with varying levels of physics knowledge—low, medium, and high level—were selected in order to capture potential variations. Five participants were selected within each level group and the study was conducted with fifteen participants in total. Think aloud and retrospective questioning strategies were used throughout the individually conducted problem solving sessions to capture variations in the participants’ thinking processes. The analysis of the data showed that thought experiments were actively used cognitive tools by participants from all there levels while working on the problems. Four different thought experiment structures were observed and categorized as limiting case, extreme case, simple case, and familiar case. It was also observed that participants conducted thought experiments for different purposes such as prediction, proof, and explanation. The reasoning resources behind the thought experiment processes were classified in terms of observed facts, intuitive principles, and scientific concepts. The results of the analysis suggested that thought experiments used as a creative reasoning tool for scientists can also be a productive tool for students. It was argued that instructional practices enriched with thought experiments and related practices not only reveal hidden elements of students’ reasoning but also provide students opportunities to advance their inquiry skills through thought experimentation processes.  相似文献

Divergent views on the relative value or status of spoken and written language skills may contribute to a disconnect between lay community members and language professionals, activists, or academics, and conflicted approaches to language support, teaching and/or revitalisation. Helping students to use and interpret representations in science is critically important if they are to become scientifically literate and able to engage in the discourses related to understanding scientific issues. The purpose of this case-study is to report on how one Year 5 teacher in a small, city school in Brisbane, Australia used different visual, embodied, and language representations to capture students’ engagement in the inquiry tasks. While the case study showed that the students demonstrated clear understandings of the relationships between the different scientific phenomena they were investigating, there is no evidence that these ways of thinking and talking generalised to other inquiry-science topics.However, the case study does provide insights into how this teacher used different visual, embodied, and language strategies to help the students in his class develop complex understandings of the inquiry-science unit they were studying.  相似文献
