Paulo and the Birds: Towards a Magical Realist Approach to Ethnography

This article explores how magical realism can be used as an analytic to study culture. I propose a magical realist epistemology that seeks to dismantle binaristic impulses by allowing for competing notions of reality to co-exist. This displacement of Western notions of “truth” compels Western ethnographers and their readers to imagine an alternative world where the magical and the mundane are mutually sustaining.

A New Approach to Thesis Subject Analysis: A Collaborative Success

ABSTRACT

The challenge of assigning subject headings to academic theses and dissertations in a timely and cost-effective manner is discussed. The paper describes a collaborative effort between cataloger and subject bibliographer at the University of Nevada, Reno. The project has proven effective in getting theses processed in a shorter amount of time, with less total time spent cataloging and analyzing the items. The authors believe that utilizing the knowledge of the subject specialist has also provided improved subject access, particularly in highly specialized theses and dissertations. The authors describe the steps taken and the resources utilized.     

World Wide Web Page Design: A Structured Approach

SUMMARY

In conclusion, homepage construction based on structured programming concepts makes it simpler to build a functional homepage. It also assists in organization of the homepage and provides for easier maintenance and modification. Figure 3 contains an example of a simple home page which incorporates the principles outlined in this article. As more libraries create their own Web sites, use of structured organization can provide a framework for control over the many variables in this process.

作为一种重要的情报学分析方法,引文分析法自问世以来就深受国际图情界重视,并得到作者同被引(ACA)和引用认同(CI)等重大改进,但ACA对施引者尤其是高影响力施引者关注不足,而CI不便于应用.为弥补上述缺憾,提出引荐分析法(CRA),它综合了引文分析法和知识图谱等方法,通过分析高影响力作者的施引列表来寻找该作者眼中的学界同行,在对大量专家的引荐结果进行汇总后可获得较为精确的领域研究结构全景图.采用h指数遴选学科专家,并以国内图情界为例进行了实证研究,结果表明CRA不仅有助于挖掘更为丰富的引文信息,为分析学科结构提供新的方法,而且有助于丰富社会网络研究.

本文从媒介竞争中经常使用的价值链一词出发,回顾了这一概念的演变脉络,及其对媒介生产行为的意义。在此基础上,作者认为价值链正在向空间尺度扩展,媒介生产网络更能概括目前社会情境下的媒介生产方式,体现传播资源的集散运动。     

Taking the Plunge: A Contextual Approach to Problem-Based Research

This study investigated the possibility that persuasive agents’ inability to obtain their goals symbolically is the major factor underlying their decisions to use direct coercion as a compliance‐gaining tactic. Several higher‐order interactions were tested to determine the joint effects oj persuasive agents’ communicative failure, persuasive agents’ and persuasive targets’ gender, and the nature of their relationship on agents’ decisions to use violence as a means of achieving their persuasive ends. Results confirmed the hypothesis that males were more likely than females to use violence against a noncompliant male persuasive target in a noninterpersonal relational context. Males were also more likely than females to use direct coercion against persistently noncompliant and noninterpersonal persuasive targets in relational contexts with short‐term consequences.
