Story of a conference: Distance education students' experiences in a departmental conference

This case study examines the impact of a program-wide event on the sense of community in a distance education program. The departmental conference examined in this study is intended to help students gain experience in sharing their ideas and plays a large role in building a sense of community among residential students and faculty. This study examines an effort to extend this community-building role to students enrolled in the department's fully online Distance Masters and Certificate programs. The study explores whether these students felt a need for such community-building experiences, what they gained from this experience, and what can be learned from what went well and what could be improved in the organization of the conference. Findings indicate that active participants felt an increased sense of community, but that not all students were interested in this type of community-building activity.

Teaching Women's Studies: The effects of 'race' and gender

This article aims to explore the relationship between gender and 'race' when teaching a course on 'race', class and gender to women's studies students at a university. It will explore how the racial background and gender of the lecturer may affect the relationship she has with the students and how they see her role as a teacher of 'race' and gender. It will examine how teaching can be and is related to our personal subjective experiences such as our gender, 'race', class, sexuality and age. Whilst most students welcomed the opportunity to discuss issues around 'race' and racism, for some (mostly Black and Asian students) this was often seen as a painful experience based on past experiences. For others (mostly white women) the opportunity to discuss and hear about the experiences of Black and Asian women was something they valued. The article goes on to argue that teaching students about sensitive subjects such as 'race' can be affected not only by the personal experiences of the lecturer, but also by their racial identity and their gender. Indeed, such identities can also affect how students feel about such subjects and how they, in turn, experience their learning.     

Women's Studies in England: Mature women students and their educational vision

In this article the author takes the vantage points of a group of mature women's studies students at the University of East London to explore the meanings they gave to their education. What kinds of knowledge did they discover and appropriate; what kinds did they resist? How do their stories illuminate the ongoing workings of the academy today? Their perspectives reveal a series of dichotomies taken for granted throughout the university: dichotomies such as those of experience versus theory, research versus teaching, and general and 'objective' versus 'subjective' and particular knowledges. Rather than being inherent in the process of acquiring advanced knowledge about the world, such binaries are structurally embedded in the current organization and practices of higher education. They are socially constructed ideological devices to keep some subjects, students and teaching faculty continually 'at the margins', leaving the dominant disciplines, their practices, and their practitioners, fundamentally intact. This article explores these contradictions.

Anger Among Allies: Audre Lorde's 1981 Keynote Admonishing the National Women's Studies Association

This essay argues that Audre Lorde's 1981 keynote speech, “The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism,” has much to contribute to communication scholars’ understanding of human biases and rhetorical artistry. The significance of Lorde's subject is one reason for devoting critical attention to her speech, because, in contemporary public life in the United States, anger has abiding relevance in an extraordinary range of rhetoric and public address. Another reason for contemplating Lorde's speech is the fact that anger was a major theme throughout the internationally acclaimed poet-activist's advocacy. The essay suggests that Lorde's speech illustrates a communication technique, shifting subjectivities, which recurs in her rhetorical artistry.     

Women's Studies and Feminist Pedagogy: Critical challenges to Japanese educational values and practices

Japanese scholarship in the field of women's studies has grown markedly in recent years, and accompanying this has been a steady rise in the number of universities and junior colleges offering women's studies-related courses. What we have not seen, however, is much attention to the issue of feminist pedagogy and efforts to explore new ways of teaching the content of women's studies that are consonant with feminist goals and values. This paper underscores the vital need to develop approaches to teaching and learning that challenge many of the values and practices that dominate Japanese education today. Student reactions and responses to the author's attempts to incorporate alternative approaches in the teaching of women's studies courses are examined and analysed in an attempt to understand some of the difficulties entailed in launching such a challenge as well as the potentials for change.
