Academic Libraries in Japan

Academic libraries in Japan are well resourced by international standards, and support Japan’s internationally recognized research capability well, but there are also ways in which they reflect Japan’s strong bureaucratic culture. Recent changes to the status of national university libraries have seen a new interest in customer service, and service quality development. Potential changes in education for librarianship and an organisational focus on staff training and development are likely to enhance service delivery in Japanese academic libraries.     

Ebooks in Academic Libraries

Abstract

The number of ebooks continues to grow in academic libraries. Ebooks have many advantages that make them attractive as a library resource. However, ebooks also have restrictions. These include use and sharing restrictions, license restrictions, and technological barriers. Some students also prefer print books for specific tasks. The following articles examine many aspects of ebooks in academic libraries, including student preference, overall ebook use, and the advantages and disadvantages of various ebook acquisition models.     

Louisiana Academic Libraries

Abstract

The state of Louisiana has a long history of consortial activities among academic libraries. Having this infrastructure in place contributed to the ease of creation of a distance library services network that includes both public and private universities. This paper traces the history of academic library consortia in Louisiana, and provides methodologies and results of several surveys of distance education students. The results of a survey currently being conducted are forthcoming.

教育部以教高[2015]14号印发并实施了《普通高等学校图书馆规程》,文章以一个高校图书馆馆员的视角,对新《普通高等学校图书馆规程》与《普通高等学校图书馆规程(修订)》进行对比,对新《普通高等学校图书馆规程》中涉及高校图书馆建设发展的若干重要问题进行了分析、归纳和总结.在《普通高等学校图书馆规程》的指导下,高校图书馆在未来要重点做好以下工作:注重图书馆专业人才培养,支持学术研究,以促进图书馆事业的可持续发展;嵌入教学科研,开展学科化服务;重视数字资源建设,做好本校学术资源数字化工作;积极参与学校人才培养,提高学生综合素质,利用现代化技术,完善和创新信息素质教育的形式和内容,创造实践机会,锻炼学生社会实践能力;积极参与校园文化建设,引领校园文化;共享协作,服务社会.

GIS in Academic Business Libraries

Abstract

Geospatially referenced data is gaining popularity as a format for primary data in business, but few business libraries offer GIS services. This paper can be used as a guide for business librarians seeking to implement GIS services for patrons. First, a brief introduction to GIS is presented. Then, major implementation issues are highlighted and literature sources are presented for each. Discussions include the incorporation of GIS education into business curricula, GIS software choices, and WWW sources of geospatially referenced data sets and information. Finally, suggested readings are included in the appendix.     

Cataloging Vacancies in Academic Libraries

This article repons the results of a study of re-opened, extended or "second" searches for professional cataloging positions in academic libraries. Procedures used in searches, analysis of applicants, and reasons why the initial searches were unsuccessful are given.     

Using Wikis in Academic Libraries

This is an exploratory study investigating the use of wikis in academic libraries. Reasons for using and not using wikis, level of control exerted on wikis users and perceived benefits and costs of using wikis are the major areas examined. Sixty universities were selected to complete either survey 1 or survey 2, depending on their usage of wikis at the time the study was conducted. Telephone interviews were conducted for those libraries from whom there were no email replies. The response rate reached 80%. Sixteen (33.3%) used wikis for work, four (8.3%) used wikis in experimental stages, 13 (27.1%) were potential users who planned to use wikis and 15 (31.3%) did not plan to use wikis at all. The advantageous features of wikis were found to be the main reasons for their use. MediaWiki is the most commonly adopted wiki software in university libraries, and the level of control is closely related to the reasons for wiki use. Despite the fact that costs are incurred in creating wikis, current users found that the benefits outweigh the costs. It is hoped that this study can provide insights for making informed decisions in applying wikis in academic libraries.
